I don’t know about you, but there’s just something about the 4th of July that screams summer is finally here! Maybe it’s the backyard barbecues or the family outings to the beach. Maybe, it’s the brilliantly colored fireworks that make us all feel like kids again. Or, quite possibly, it’s simply because it happens to fall during National Ice Cream Month. For as long as I can remember, Independence Day was always celebrated at my house with good food and good fun, but it was the ice cream sundae at the end of the night that stole the show. My mom would set up a mini-bar with every topping imaginable, and we’d all create these crazy concoctions to enjoy during the fireworks display. My go-to flavors were always chocolate and mint chocolate chip. Then, I’d pile on sprinkles, gummy bears, and my favorite — Reese’s peanut butter cups! It tastes better than it sounds, especially after I mixed everything together. I once dubbed this chilly treat Patriotic Peanut Butter Surprise. After that, each year became a contest to see who could create the best new flavor and name. If you won, mom would add your ice cream’s name to the blackboard in the kitchen and you had the honor of picking out the ice cream for the family for the rest of the year. Sounds great, right? It was until my sister won and decided that peach ice cream was all we would be eating for the next 12 months. Yuck! Anyway…now it’s your turn to come up with an amazing new ice cream treat, but you won’t get your name on my mother’s blackboard. No, if you win this contest, you’ll get a cool $1,500 for college.
