August is National Golf Month, but if you are a true golfer, you know every month is golf month in Florida; with over 1,051 courses to choose from, you’ll never have any trouble getting a tee time in the Sunshine State. It is estimated that 25.7 million people over the age of six played golf in the United States in 2011, spending more than $75 billion on equipment and other fees. And thanks to golfers like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, it’s becoming even more popular among younger children. Students no longer have to play football or basketball to score free money for college. Many organizations now offer scholarships for those who enjoy spending their time on the green. Some might say that golf is much easier than football or basketball, but consider this – the chances of making a hole-in-one twice in a round of golf are 1 in 67 million. That’s pretty amazing. Thank goodness your chances for scoring a golf scholarship are much better.
Here are some scholarships specifically for students who are hoping to score a hole-in-one!
1. CaptainU Student-Athlete Scholarship
Any high school or junior college student, who participates in a sport, including golf, may apply for this scholarship. One $2,000 award is offered every quarter, so don’t miss your chance to score this award. Next deadline: September 30, 2012.
2. The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund will award $1.5 million in scholarships to students in the 2012-2013 academic year. The scholarship is a renewable, need- and merit-based, competitive undergraduate scholarship, ranging in value from $1,500 to $15,000 per year. To be eligible, applicants must have completed at least two years of service to golf as caddies, assistants in a pro shop, or participated in course superintendent operations at a club in Massachusetts. Deadline: December 1, 2012.
3. West Virginia Golf Association Scholarship Fund
Any student, who is a resident of West Virginia and has played amateur or competitive golf may apply for this award. Applicants may have also worked as a caddie, grounds keeper or bag boy. Two $1,000 scholarships are available. Deadline: January 15, 2013.
4. Women’s Western Golf Foundation Scholarship
Beginning October 1, any female golfer, who is a high school senior and planning to graduate in 2013, may apply for this program. Several $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, excellence of character, and an involvement in the sport of golf. Deadline: March 1, 2013.
5. Platt Caddie Scholarships are based on financial need. Awards range from $500 to $8,300 per academic year for undergraduates and up to $3,000 per year for graduate students. Applicants must have graduated from high school and served as a caddie at a member club of the Golf Association of Philadelphia for a minimum of one season. If it is determined that an applicant has no financial need, he/she will be admitted as an Honorary Caddie-Scholar. Deadline: April 25, 2013.
6. GCSAA Student Essay Contest
The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in turf grass science, agronomy, or any other field related to golf course management. Applicants must submit an essay on golf course management that is 7-12 pages in length. Deadline: March 31, 2013.
So, head over to your nearest golf course and start putting around. Who knows, spending some time on the green may actually make your bank account greener too!
