Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Each September, students in grades 7 through 12 can compete in 28 different categories, including, but not limited to: comic art, fashion, painting, photography, poetry, short story, journalism, and video games. More than $250,000 in scholarships is awarded annually.

Angela Award

Established in honor of Dr. Gerry Wheeler, for his outstanding dedication to NSTA and lifelong commitment to science education and towards encouraging girls to consider careers in STEM. The award recognizes one female student in grades 5-8 who has shown excellence of involvement and/or has strong connections to science; evidence of sustained accomplishments or progress/interest in science; and evidence that the student’s interest in science has impacted others.

Courage in Student Journalism Award

Middle school and high school students who have exercised their First Amendment rights, despite difficulty or resistance, may be eligible to win a $5,000 scholarship through this contest sponsored by the Student Press Law Center, the Center for Scholastic Journalism at Kent State University, and the National Scholastic Press Association

"I Want to Go to College” Writing Sweepstakes

Prizes will be awarded to 12 winners in seventh and eighth grades who will receive contributions to the Nebraska Educational Savings Trust (NEST) college savings accounts – including $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Three winners will be chosen from each of Nebraska’s three Congressional districts, and three winners will be chosen from outside Nebraska. Each Nebraska winner will receive four tickets to the May 22 Storm Chasers game at Werner Park in Papillion where they will be recognized during a brief ceremony.

The Nicholas A. Virgilio Memorial Haiku Competition

Students in grades 7 through 12 may compete in this creative writing contest. Students may submit up to three haikus, as long as the work has not been previously published or submitted in any other contest. Six winners will each receive $50

Kohls department stores offered this scholarship for students in two age groups: ages 6 – 12 and ages 13 – 18 who have not yet graduated from high school, based upon outstanding community service during the last 12 months.

AnitaB.org Grace Hopper Celebration

AnitaB.org produces Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) in collaboration with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). GHC is the world’s largest gathering of women and non-binary technologists. Those who attend GHC gain access to career and academic workshops, networking opportunities, inspirational role models, and memories that will last a lifetime! For 2022, GHC will be going hybrid! GHC Scholars will participate in the virtual component of GHC and receive exclusive opportunities such as pre-GHC programming, professional development, and networking opportunities.

Margaret Chase Smith Public Affairs Scholarship

Each academic year the MCS Public Affairs Scholarship is awarded to one or two UMaine undergraduates who propose an independent research project relevant to public policy in Maine. Scholarship students apply in April and work with a faculty advisor throughout the following year to conduct their research. The students then present their work in the spring at the UMaine Student Research Symposium.

Supports students admitted to a nursing program, either LPN, RN, or BSN. Verda Lane scholarship was made possible through an endowment established by her family in honor of her years of dedicated nursing service.
