College of Charleston Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at College of Charleston accurate?

sara

Some people are like this, while others aren't. No stereotypes can work in a college atmosphere.

Toby

These sterotypes are accurate in some ways because I do not feel like students are very friendly, well most anyway, and I feel like CofC does not get as much credit as they deserve because people just think we are a "party" school.

Kelly

Colleges in general are all party schools so I wouldn't say it is completely accurate.

Sarah

yes

Hunter

Mostly true. There is a large group of hippies as well. and a few that just don't fit into any classification. but for the most part, the school is composed of kids from southern states or very preppy areas.

Sam

Well, I believe every school can be a party school if that is all you do personally. It's all just up to you. The school ratio is 7-1 female to male, and it is mostly white mid-upperclass, but there is some diversity.

Alex

C of C is not a "party school." Parties do occur, just as they do at every other college in the U.S. However, this past year, our freshman class had an average SAT score of 1220 coming in and they were all within the top 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of their high school classes. We are students that know how to balance...we care about what we're learning and our grades, but we also want to be involved in outside events (whether these events are volunteering, participating in arts' clubs, or going to a weekend party). 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the professors that I've had at C of C are more understanding and creative than one would expect them to be. I do not believe that the work load is laid back; however, I do believe that, since the classes are usually 25 students are less, the professors have a better feel for their students. They get to know us on a personal level, and have a chance to help give feedback to make the classes more interesting. The stereotypes about the students are all some-what true. Pay attention to the "some-what." C of C has students from all 50 states, AND students from 76 different countries. These statistics allow C of C to be a college where anyone, from any background can attend and still enjoy! There are many students from better off families, but there are also many students here on full-scholarships. Once again, like any college, we're diverse! Being at the beach all of the time only comes with the end of Spring Semester. With four beaches, all within a 20-30 minute drive of the campus, it gets difficult not to be at a beach. I, personally, go out in between classes and study, only to drive back and head to class in soffees and a tank top. After your first year here, you learn to take your harder classes fall semester, and make a schedule that allows for some fun time in April (the last semester of Spring Break). Or, you learn to work really hard the first three months of Spring Semester and take it easy that last month. Who wouldn't want to take advantage of the beaches? And, the last stereotype, yes, we are all more tuned into the arts fields than most people our age. Our college is very arts related and the city of Charleston allows for many arts opportunities. So, even if you aren't majoring in an arts-related field, you can still take advantage of the different scenes downtown!

Megan

I wouldn't say that CofC is any more of a party school than any other college. It just so happens that we're fortunate enough to live in a fun town that is right by the beach, but an equal amount of "partying" goes on at any other college. As far as the student body goes, I think we have a great mix of students. Other than the fact that there are more girls than guys, I don't feel that any real stereotype overwhelms the student population.
