Describe the students at James Madison University.

Charles

As I said when first describing JMU stereotypes, it is easy to say that students are extremely diverse here. There are a good amount of organizations that cater towards specific interest and orientations in life. These people are all accepted, and in most classes different types of people always end up becoming good friends. This is what makes JMU such a great community and provides a prosperous environment for learning and making new connections. All students are engaged in what is going on in the world and this is a good thing. A lot of kids come from wealth but recognize what life has to offer when you're not greedy. JMU has proven to me that I will make a lot of money when I get out of college and most kids have that general attitude of success.

At JMU students are very friendly and understanding. Even when people have different opinions or beliefs they try to respect those of others. I would say that although there is ethnic diversity, we could still benefit from more diversity. But people do not treat you differently because of how you look. There is a wide variety religiously and people can get involved with groups that have similar religious ideas. JMU does have a high Christian population though (although not all are practicing Christians) and there are a significant number of Christian organizations for them to be involved in. From my understanding the parent of the average student at JMU makes $120,000 a year. That is not the case for me, or for many of my friends. Although there are quite a few students who are from a higher economic standing, there are still plenty of people through out the spectrum. We have a noticeable LGBT community on campus that is active and growing and I have seen growing acceptance in my years at JMU. One thing I would change is that people seem to cluster with their racial/ethnic group and I wish there was a way to work on that because ideally the JMU students want to have everyone interacting with each other. About going to class, most students dress comfortably, although girls tend to dress-up more than guys.

JMU is not as diverse a school as many other colleges. It is predominately a white campus but there are people from different backgrounds. JMU is said to be full of girls wearing UGG boots and Northface jackets. That is probably the majority of the people on the campus but not everyone dresses like that. There are a lot of people from northern virginia who are of high socio-economic class. I would say JMU is probably more liberal than conservative. There are a lot of religious groups on campus for people who want to get involved to get involved. It would be so much better if JMU was more diverse than it is especially since I came from such a diverse highschool but sadly it isn't as diverse as I would want it to be. I don't think people would feel out of place at all based on race because JMU is such a loving community.

JMU may not seem like a diverse campus at first glance (as it is majoritally white girls), but the range of personalities and backgrounds that can be found at this campus are astounding. I think it would be difficult for anyone to really truely feel out of place here, there is so much to offer on this campus and something for everyone. The majority of students though seem to be from either VA, NY, NJ, Pennsylvania or Maryland. It's not uncommon to see girls dressed red carpet ready for class (for some reason??), but its just as equally common to see your everyday jeans and hoodie filling the same classroom.

The student body is extremely diverse. This can be seen any day on the Commons, on the Quad, or really anywhere you go. Clubs and organizations are huge on campus and play a big role in putting on campus wide events and activities. Greek life is prevalent, but definitely not overwhelming and all encompassing.

Michelle

My classmates are very outgoing, friendly, and love to socialize.

Leslie

According to their attitudes and interaction between me and them, my classmates are both friendly and eager to learn as much as I want to learn.

Emanuel

All of my classmates look at the big picture. Our lives are only worth so much, and we all seem to be searching for an identity and a purpose at our insitution. While, first and foremost, academics is the key to our time at JMU, probing the depths of what it means to be connected and human are constant topics in the classroom. At the end of the day, all of my classmates display love for our university and for one another.

Sara

Although most people are too preoccupied with the party life, there is another side of students here who are intelligent, hard-working and involved people who have their own respectful interests and passions.
