Norfolk State University has truly captured my heart. Being on campus feels invigorating—it's all about energy, growth, and community here. What really stands out to me is the vibrant sports culture; whether I’m cheering on our athletes or getting in on the action myself, there’s always an exciting vibe. It makes me feel like I'm part of something larger than just academics. The enthusiasm from fellow students at games, pep rallies, and even casual sporting events is absolutely infectious, creating a real sense of pride and unity among us.
On top of sports, the Arts program at Norfolk State is just incredible, offering amazing opportunities that ignite my creativity and inspiration. Whether it’s theater, music, or visual arts, the program really nurtures our talents and gives us the chance to express ourselves. It’s so uplifting to be around others who share that same passion and who motivate one another to grow.
But what truly sets Norfolk State apart is the unwavering support and camaraderie you find here. Students are always stepping up to lend a hand—whether it’s forming study groups, mentoring, or just offering a few kind words. The staff is equally dedicated, ensuring we have all the resources and guidance we need to thrive. Combined, these elements create such a warm and enriching environment, and I couldn’t be prouder to call myself a Spartan.

NSU is a place you have to experience for yourselves but they help you feel like you belong and encourages their student. I will say some students get wrapped up in the party life but if you have to make the experience that you want, I typically stay to myself and stay in my books. BEHOLD!

I went on a college tour at Norfolk State University and I feel that it is welcoming and prioritizes education. I can't wait to possibly be in attendance Fall 2025. My tour guide was a social work major and really helped me open my eyes into what I want my future career to be.

Norfolk State University actually wasn't my first choice. But I committed to playing volleyball at NSU because of the welcoming and family-like environment. My Coach, Kathy Bullock, is just the type of coach I was looking for at an HBCU. She is a warm and welcoming yet strict and firm coach. I feel very lucky and fortunate to have a coach like her because I know that she genuinely wants the best for me and will push me to go best the best me I can be. The sports environment at NSU is very strong and everyone knows all the athletes. Our sports are pretty decent and we have 8 incoming freshman on our volleyball team so we are going to be very good this year and hopefully win the MEAC tournament. Our women's basketball team made it to the Sweet Sixteen during the 2022 season and unfortunately our men's team lost by 1 point which held them back from also making it to the Sweet Sixteen. Although there is a very good sports environment, one major problem that students tend to have with the school is the housing department. The new residential dorms are normally designated for all underclassmen athletes with the exception of people who pay extra to stay in the new dorms. However, housing has split up the volleyball team and put the 15 of us in 4 different dorms, one of which is on the other side of campus away from the caf, both gyms, and the training room. Similar things have happened where teammates request to be in the same room, that request is approved, and then said teammates are in completely different rooms than what was approved previously. Excluding the fact that housing is hit or miss, our advisors and other Norfolk State staff like the chefs and caf workers are extremely kind and easy to get along with. The administrative staff, advisors and professors are usually always willing to help out and aid students in whatever they need.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my HBCU. However, there are some things that can be improved. I wish some of the staff were more friendly and helpful, but honestly it’s a hit or miss with them. Also we spend money on the wrong things, we need more places to eat on campus rather than a new water fountain. The older buildings and dorms also could be upgraded.

Norfolk State University is a Historically Black College University in Norfolk Virginia. The class sizes are smaller and I enjoy this since I transferred from a very large university. Norfolk State is an open campus so there have been times non visitors have come on our campus causing trouble. The advisors aren’t the most helpful and you may end up planning your courses yourself. There’s a lot of access to scholarships and aid but it does take a while for one to receive their aid. Marijuana is legal in Virginia so there are times where you randomly smell it or see someone smoking. Lastly, there are beaches nearby and the social life is good considering we collaborate with the other universities that are close by for certain events and parties!

I love my school I have learn so much from being here. I am looking forward to learning more from everyone that is around me. The teachers are pushing us to be the best person that we can be. They are opening there doors to help us in any way they can, this makes every thing a whole lot easer.
Emonie - 06/22/2020
My overall experience is very good. they have people who are willing to help you. Many freshman come to the campus more lost then you think. There are people who are willing to give tours so on the first day of class you know where your classes are. They throw a lot of activities but also focus on the school work and making sure everyone's safe and is on track academically.

I am a first-year transfer student at Norfolk State University, and although the school year was cut short, I enjoyed every moment I had there and I look forward to returning. From the moment I got on campus, all of the students and faculty were very welcoming, and that never changed during my time there. The professors really want to get to know you and they make sure you understand the information. The students make sure you aren't alone and that you are enjoying your experience. Overall, I love it and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else!

I believe Norfolk State University is a wonderful school to attend. They are getting rid of a lot of the older building and building newer ones. This school is actually starting to look like a university. My only issue is the area I wish there were more stores and restaurants around like Starbucks, Chipotle, and etc.
Lauren - 04/02/2020
Norfolk State University is full of joy, excitement, love, talent, and so much more! Norfolk State encourages their students and mean well in all the things they do for us. It’s not one day that goes by that students don’t receive information on what’s happening on campus. There are many emails involving the governor coming to talk to us, voting, campus alerts, and all different kinds of activities. They provide a safe environment with our campus police and our on campus police station, as well as the security on the gates. Norfolk State is a wonderful and joyful school. I love my HBCU! BEHOLD THE GREEN AND GOLD

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
If I could go back in time I would tell myself to try more. I have realiazed that when I truley push myself and put my mind to something I can do amazing things. Yes it requires alot of hardwork but I really love teh adrennaine rush of working hard, whether, it's serving dozens and dozens of people, working on a drawing, leading a children choir, or just exercising. When I fully put my heart and soul in a task I really come out with a masterpiece. And with that information, I could use it to motivate my past self so I could pull out the confindence that I have recently found.
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
How hard it is to get out! My school has truly raised its standards since I came in. Even though I had a good enough gpa to get into almost any school of my choice, the entry requirements were a little low back then. It was really easy to get into NSU, but definitely hard to get out. The professors are really serious about your education and will truly make you work hard to earn your degree. I can say now that I truly appreciate that aspect of my alma mater.
Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.

What kind of person should not attend this school?
The type of person that shouldn't attend this school is a person that tends to goof off academically, because failing might be easier than that person thinks.
My classmates know why they came to college and what they are here for. They pay attention in class with no disturbances or interuptions. Everyone in my class has a goal and they are there to acheive it.
