What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
In highschool I thought that it would be easier for me to just have fun and slack off and not apply myself in school. I did get good grades and graduated with a 3.87, but didn't bother to apply to any schools. I wish I had gone to a state or university. I fell like being at a 4 year college would have kept me more focused on school. I have taken the last year and a half off from community college to work and help take care of my family. I am glad that I did that and the things I have experienced from working full time and it has helped me decide what career path I want to take by learning what jobs I do not want to have.
I would tell my high school senior self to take school more seriously and try harder.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
There is a lot of construction going on which causes a lot of chaos. The construction won't be done for a while. It also makes the campus less appealing to onlookers. Although it will better the campus in the future, it's is something that bugs me.

Where is the best place to get work done on campus?
Like most colleges and universities, most people go to the library to study or do homework. However, there's also a Starbucks and lounge on the second floor of the K building where a lot of people go to have study groups. There's a tutoring center called "The Place" where students can go and get tutored and look at anatomy models similar to the ones that are in the classrooms. There are benches scattered around campus under trees and such where I have often times sat and read and did some last minute studying in between classes.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
Miramar College is a wonderful school and before attending this campus I wish I would have known how to take adequate notes and realize what was most important in each lecture compared to writing notes in high school. It would be nice to have a scheduled orientation of the school. Fortunitly I had friends that led me through admissions and took me on a personal tour of the campus. It would be helpful for each student to have a time set to see a counselor before enrolling in the various classes.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
I suppose the most frustrating thing about Miramar, if I had to choose something, would be the availability of academic counseling. Hours are generally 9-5 (roughly), Monday through Friday, and appointment opportuities are scarce (thus wait times can be extremely long). This makes it especially difficult for those of us who work full time during the day to access the academic counseling we need.

What's unique about your campus?
I am attending San Diego Miramar College as a 49 year old looking for a career change, alongside both my children, who are 23 (working towards transferring to university) and 28 (post-military on GI bill), so I have the privilege of viewing the college from multiple perspectives. The best thing, I believe, about Miramar is the fact that it is easily accessible to folks like us, at different stages of life - working adults, full-time college students...all those who are looking to expand their education. Options abound at Miramar, and I'm grateful for that.
