What should every freshman at Southeastern Louisiana University know before they start?

Whitney

Are you happy with your life? Can you picture yourself or you son/daughter at this school being happy? Life is only what you make of it, and you only have one shot. You might as well make it a good one! See, I feel that people who can picture themselves happy have a better chance of being more successful at the university level because of their confidence and realisitic expectations will make adjustments easier. One can never really know what to expect in college; however, being flexible and open for the unexpected is one way to grow into a more well-rounded human being. I wish you the best of luck, but I do not think luck will get you where you need to go - hard work and dedication will take you miles in this life!

I think that in order to find the right college for you, you need to do research and visit every college you are interested in. Find out which one is the best for your major. For example, I chose my college, Southeastern Louisiana University, because they have a very well known nursing program. I think that it is very important to balance having fun and doing school work in college. College is a very important time in life so don't have "too" much fun and blow your career. Some people fail their first year of college because they party too much. Don't do this. College is too important to throw away. It is very possible to have fun and succeed in college at the same time. Always put school ahead of having fun. Do your school work in advance and don't wait till the last minute, that way you can have fun afterwards and not be stressed out about school. Hope this was helpful!

The advice I would give to parents of students is find a college you are comfortable with. If you are not comfortable you will never be happy there. You don't have to go to a college just because it is a well known school or has good sports. Go where you are happy. Being happy at your school makes the next 4 or 5 years of your life way more interesting and way more bearable. As far as making the most of your college experience just have fun. Don't have to much fun to where your grades are not up to par, but make friends. When you go to a new class, talk to the person next to you. Talking to people can help through hard times whether they are your best friend or a total stranger. Just let yourself enjoy the next 4 or 5 years because after that you are on your own.

Think about how a potential employer would see the college on your resume. To me, community colleges are just a quick fix, just to get a degree and get out in the workforce, but universities focus on making the students well-rounded individuals. An employer doesn't always want a warm body, they want a person, preferably with a personality and dreams and ambitions of their own. Go to a college that will reflect those dreams and ambitions and then, nothing on your resume will speak louder to that employer.

Make sure that you know what your child is most interested in, then look at all available schools within your pricerange that you know you can afford to send them to with a degree that they would most likely take. Also dont send your child to a school they dont want to go, by doing so you will cause them to not want to take up the education being supplied to them so let them choose. Their college experience will be easy for them, just give them their freedom in college and allow them to think on their own and make their own mistakes, the child should make the right one if they are serious about their education and stick to the routine and have fun during their time away at college.

Work hard and finish school. Take time out for fun but don't let it get in the way of your studies.
