Attending Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) was the best choice for me because of its affordable tuition, supportive learning environment, and strong academic programs. As a student working toward my associate’s degree in liberal arts, SMCC has provided me with the foundation I need to successfully transfer to a four-year university.
One of the biggest reasons I chose SMCC was its small class sizes and dedicated professors. I wanted a college where I could receive personalized attention and support, and SMCC has exceeded my expectations. The faculty genuinely care about students’ success, and their guidance has helped me stay on track academically.
Another standout aspect of SMCC is its campus culture and sense of community. Whether through student organizations, campus events, or study groups, I have felt a strong connection with both my peers and instructors. This has made my college experience not only educational but also enriching and enjoyable.
Finally, SMCC has given me the opportunity to save money on tuition while earning a quality education. As someone who plans to transfer to the University of Southern Mississippi for a social work degree, attending SMCC first has allowed me to complete my general education courses affordably while preparing for the next step in my academic journey.
Southwest Mississippi Community College has been a stepping stone toward my future, and I’m grateful for the experiences and opportunities I’ve had here.

I like Southwest Mississippi Community College. It’s the best a community college can give. It’s getting me through my general courses, and I love it. It’s a small school, so it’s easier to make friends. The classes are small so you can have a bit more 1 on 1 time with teachers if you need it. They have a tutoring program and PLENTY of work-study jobs. It’s a good school for the most part. The only problem is the housing. It takes a long time for anything to get done, but what can you do when all your maintenance staff keeps quitting? I rate this school pretty highly on my list. It’s nice and quiet and has a big lake with ducks always tending to themselves. It’s a beautiful campus. I love it.

Overall, SMCC is a good college to attend. There are not as many opportunities as far as internships and clubs since it is a small junior college, but the professors are considerate and willing to help you with anything you ask of them. There are great people here, and they care about the safety of the students. There are geese and duck on the campus, but they won’t hurt you. I enjoyed my time there and I feel amply prepared for life in the real world as well as university life.

It's a decent school. There isn't much extracurricular activities other than sports and a few groups such as Tri-Beta, our biology club. The facilities are pretty nice for the most part. There is a cafeteria and a grill. The cafeteria is decent, but the grill is really good. For the most part, the professors work with you really well. It is a family environment here. The campus is quite beautiful for a junior college. There's a pretty lake with bridges crossing it. It's a great view when you are walking to class. The president and the athletic director are super nice. It does have its downfall with very few extracurriculars and not very many places to go outside or on campus though.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
Wow ! If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior, the advice I would give myself would be to slow down, be patient and most definitely train myself in better study habits and ask questions. I have been out of high school only two years and it has flown by. Slowing down and being patient goes hand in hand. When you reach 9th grade, you say: man, if I could only be a Senior....then the Sophomore year comes and again, only two more years and "I'm out of this place"; then, in the blink of an eye, you're walking down that aisle with your cap and gown with your classmates and you wonder how those four high school years passed so quickly. But, the most important advice I would give myself would be to "hit the books" !!! I know now that college is a different world and I wish that I had spent more of my free time reading, studying or getting together with study groups. Note to self as a senior - study, slow down and be patient and ask a ton of questions.
What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
So far, I have not experienced a "worst" thing about my school. The student/teacher ratio is one of the best in the state and the faculty and staff are always willing to lend a hand with anything. The administrative staff, as well as the dean and president, meet & greet most students and call us by name. So, I guess if I had to say the worst thing about my school is the ducks! They sometimes attack students as they walk around the lake going to and from class.
