What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
My advice would be to save, save, save. I live on my own due to unforseen circumstances and what I would give to have a little bit in my savings. My other advice would be to apply for as many scholarships as I could possibly find. There are so many out there but that wasn't how I wanted to spend my time as a senior. Now I wish I had. So many times I find a scholarship and the requirement is to be a graduating senior. If only I could go back in time and force the younger me to fill those out when I had the chance. Then again maybe I wouldn't be applying for this scholarship now. Who knows. Anyway, the bottom line is if you save up and apply for what is basically free money now, you wouldn't have had to drop out of school for a year and work your butt off to go back later.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
The worst thing about my school is the surrounding area. Although the town just off campus is like a small town, there are not many places for students to leave campus and visit. There are a line of stores and a single screen movie theater within walking distance of the campus.

What are the academics like at your school?
Most of my professors know my name even if it takes them a few weeks. I even have some that say hi and remember me after I take their class! One of my favorite classes was a class that had nothing to do with my major because the teacher was personable and made the topic exciting and interesting. I study hard and often because I want to do well.
To be honest if you do not participate in class you won't do as well. If you speak up the teachers know you read and often give you better grades. If you need help with something the professors are very good about office hours for the most part and even are willing to help you make non office hour appointments.

Do you feel like you changed a lot?
Personally? No. I haven't changed all that much. I was pretty level-headed in high school, and I would say that the only thing that has really changed is that I've matured slightly more (not that I was immature in highschool), and I look slightly older now. Everyone's experience will be different, you may make a complete 180, you may stay the exact same. It all depends on who you are and where you're at in your life.

I don't drink. Will it be hard for me to go to parties?
It depends. I don't personally go out to house parties, mostly because they sometimes charge you a $5 fee, and because most of my friends are already 21 and we have our own "safe house" to drink at. People say that no one will pressure you to drink. That's a lie. People do what they do. But yes, you can go to parties and no have to drink.Just stick with your friends or someone you know/trust and you should be set.

When you step off campus what do you see?
Fields. Well, we do have a town. It's quaint and nice. There's a movie theater, some restaurants, and boutiques and up the road is Walmart and Wegmans. Plus town is pretty cheap, as far as college kid standards go. Easy to get around, and Greece is only a twenty minute drive away, Rocheste is about forty minutes.

What's the Greek scene like?
If you like doing a ton of charity work/ fundraising, and if you like being plastered for most of the weekend, then Greek life may be for you. I'm not in any Sororities, never will be, have 0 interest in doing it, so it's hard for me to answer this question. However, I can tell you that only a few Sororities/Fraternities are recognized on campus legally, so be careful with which one you join, but it's pretty obvious to tell which ones are legit or not.

What's the dating scene like?
Like highschool, but slightly more mature. There's the couples that are attached to the hip, the inconspicuous couples, the couples that fight 24/7 and University Police has to be called, etc. The plus side is, is that you generally don't have to slowly inch your way down the hallway to get to your class, since you're walking outside from building to building.

Tell us about your professors.
For the Criminal Justice department, my professors are pretty good. Professors are generally helpful, and for the most part get back to you within a timely fashion. If you want to see what other previous students thought of a particular professor, you can look up "RateMyProfessor" on Google*, before you sign up for that class. That's how I make my schedule, and it generally works out to my advantage.
*I don't think Unigo is affiliated with Google, so I'm putting in this mini disclaimer for legalization purposes.

Tell us about the sports scene on campus.
Our school is a sports school. A vast majority of students here come for the sports and come with scholarships through their respective sport. Superbowl is pretty big here too. I work in the main dining hall, when it's Superbowl Sunday, that place is a wasteland. We even have club sports if you don't wanna be super intense and spend all your free time dedicating yourself to the team. I'm on the fencing team. It's mad chill.
