What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
Dear HIgh School Me,
Keep working hard. I know your schedule is rigorous. It may feel like all work and no play, but I promise it will pay off. In college there will be more classes, more rehearsal and more responsibilities. The hard work you are doing now is helping you prepare for college, more than you know.
Once you get to college, keep in touch with your family. They are most important. They can and will help you through so much. Things are going to change, a lot, but keep your head on straight. Do not get too caught up in what's "cool", or who's "cool". Try to figure out who are your true friends, and try not to waste too much effort on those who are not.
When it comes to your work and responsibilites, be proactive. Procrastination is only temporarily satisfying!
Overall, be fearless. You don't know everything. You are going to learn so much. So have an open mind. Remember where home is. Work hard, but have fun. Most importantly, stay true to yourself.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
The most frustrating thing about my freshmen year experience at a performing arts school, was adjusting to the social structure and relationships between the students. Because everyone at The Juilliard School is a developing artist, personalities, intrests and values change a great deal. These changes affect how students interact with one another. Friendships are often shifting. Also, since the student body is so small, everyone knows everyone's "business", gossip and rumors can spread easily. It's vital to realize what is important and what is not.

What are the academics like at your school?
The academic classes are subpar. It really depends on which teacher you take. Since the classes are all very small in size, the teacher/student relationship becomes rather important.

What's unique about your campus?
The most incredible thing about attending Juilliard is that you are constantly surounded by supportive, talented and driven students. The amount of talent that the students possess, in so many different disciplines, is endless. Dancers can sing and actors play instruments, it's incredible. There are a lot of mutli-disciplinary projects and performances, and it's a really wonderful enviornment because all the students are passionate about what they do and what their peers do. It's great to be surrounded by people who are so dedicated and involved in the careers that they want to pursue.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
The biggest stereotype may be that the students are competitive machines, which for the most part is untrue. Of course the majority of the student body is competitve with their own selves, but not necessarily with each other.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
I truly love the program that The Juilliard School offers me as a dancer. However, the worst thing about my school is probably the way the liberal arts department devides the incoming freshman class into two different levels of academic ability. Some of the students are placed into "Humanities 1", and some are placed into "Writing for Humanities", which is a lower level class. Unfortunately the criteria for placement is never fully explained to the students. The intention of dividing the class is unclear and I feel as though nothing is fully accomplished by doing so.
