What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
I would have a lot of things to say to my high school self. I would have specific advice and a few clichés. My advice would help my future self be more prepared and successful for the future.
First I would tell myself to be more involved and not hesitate to be in as many activities as possible. Participation leads to knowledge which is one of the most marketable attributes. I would encourage myself to become part of the social scene, join clubs, sports and become an integral part of my community, home and work place. After creating these relationships, I would advise myself to completely commit to everything. In sports, school, clubs, and every relationship: commit! Commitment is the key to the experience, and to completely appreciate an experience, you must completely commit.
My final piece of advice, the most clichéd and the most important; would be to live in the moment and appreciate even the smallest of memories. Not only appreciate the moments, but to also learn from them. Listen, learn and grow. Don’t run from things you don’t understand. I would tell myself to appreciate, accept and grow from every person and event.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
I wish I had known how extremely close it would be to my house and that the way to get involved would be through a sorority or fraternity. If you do not live on campus, commuters are not aware of the events held at night and throughout the day.

What kind of person should not attend this school?
If a person just wants to go with the flow in college, the University of La Verne is not the place. Students here need to be dedicated and willing to do hard work.

What's unique about your campus?
I love how my school is small. All of my classes have no more than 40 students in them. One writing class only had 5 other students. The student teacher ratio here is perfect for discussion and really allows us to master the concepts.

The professors at ULV are amazing and so knowledgeable. They really want you to succeed in your academics
Show the professors that you really care about school and your grades. Say you get a bad grade on a test, schedule an appointment and have them go over the test with you. When they know you make an effort they help you out a lot more and are easier on
If you're looking to just party or want good sports teams, this is not the school for you. La Verne is known for it's academics and continues to excel.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
The cost. Its expensive and stressing to think of how much most students have to pay out of pocket. the school it self is great, but the cost beings stress to most students and takes away from the postive sides of going to a well known private school. The books and the supplys and the tution are way to expenisive making it frustrating and stressing.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
Our campus is definitely one of the smallest around, but these allows us to build relationships with our advisors, professors and fellow students. The faculty and staff at La Verne love their job. They do not work here for the money, but instead they work here because they have a special love for the campus. Alumnae are constantly coming back to the campus, whether it is to work here or just visit their old friends. When I tell people I go to La Verne they always comment on how amazing the university is and usually ask me if I know so and so. The city of La Verne is a small city, its not necessarily a small town, but the city definitely supports the university and the university is supportive of the city. Just recently we got a new president, so the talk of the school is about all of the changes she is creating and how amazing she is. Students constantly complain about the parking, but parking is an issue at every school. We only pay 30 bucks for a parking where as near by schools have passes for hundreds of dollars for only a semester. We also just built a brand new parking lot which has provided more than enough spots. Our campus has made so many amazing changes over the years. We have received a facelift and brand new buildings!

What are the academics like at your school?
All my professors know my name, and that is partially because of the low student to teacher ratio. Also because of this ratio, class participation is increased, but not in a competitive way. I am a political science major with intent to go to law school. I am enjoying all of my classes.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
I would not say that La Verne has one stereotype that generalizes all of its students. We have greek life students who do not fill the typical stereotype of greeks. Instead they do a lot of philanthropy work and act as a stepping stone for students for be involved in many other organizations. Our greek life molds students into successful applicants for higher positions on campus. They do not throw big parties, they dont even have greek houses. The greek organizations have their own stereotypes, but you can ask about those at a later date. We are not known for our athletics, but that just means that our athletes play because they love the sport, not because they are getting anything out of it. They love the game. We also arent all that great at sports. We arent number one in everything, but there are a few sports that we excel in.

Tell us about the food and dining options.
For students that live on campus, there is one main dining hall. (that may sound crazy to students at other colleges, but our school is small enough that we don’t need more than one). The hall is open all day, but serves hot food three times a day, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The other times, they have fruit, cereal, and sandwiches.
Students that don’t live on campus or have a meal plan are able to eat at the same dining hall for a hefty fee, but it is all you can eat, and the options are pretty large. There is always pizza and a grill, along with a salad bar, cereals, and a sandwich bar. With that, there are usually 3-4 main dishes to choose from.
There is also another place to eat on campus, located at the Campus Center, which is the building in the middle on campus. This is a Mexican food place called Barb’s, which also sells chips, fruit, and other grab-to-go goodies. Commuters usually stop by here for lunch. There are quite a few places nearby, walking-distance that are decently priced. We have a yogurt shop, a barbeque place, Greek food, two Asian food places, a pizza joint, and an Italian restaurant. We have a wing shop coming in soon.

Tell us about the sports scene on campus.
I I dont really know all that much about the sports scene on campus but I do know that we are gaining a lot of spirit in the areas. Our campus activities board is doing a great job promoting the games and attendance has heavily improved. The sports people are definitely a close group of friends. They mostly hang out with each other and support each other on their games. Some athletes get involved in other activities such as RA or student life.

What do students complain about most?
Students tend to complain about parking a lot.
We just built a new parking lot that has almost 400 spots, so that complaint has gone down a little. However, our new dorms are opening up next fall, so people are worried that that will do to the new parking lot. Hopefully our school continues to grow outward, and will build another parking lot if necessary.

Why did you decide to go to this school?
I came to ULV for spolight weekend, which is something they do for students who have been accepted and are still deciding. It was there that I fell in love with the beautiful campus, and found out about all of the ways to become involved.
I really loved the small-town feel, and never really wanted to become lost in a large school like UCLA or USC. I also liked that it was far enough away from where I went to high school, but not too far. (I'm from the bay area).
