What's your overall opinion of Willamette University?

My opinion is not so favorable. From my experience, Willamette is a small minded racist, Islamophobic university with serious bigotry and bullying. While many Anglos on campus are bigoted, they’re only half of the problem. A lot of the bigoted feminist culture is very pervasive and many of these feminists are racist, Xenophobic and Islamophobic .The Asian community only favors East and South East Asians, and Asians from Western or Southern Asia are often discriminated against especially of they’re Muslim. Many African American and East African students , including the then President of the Black Student Union as well as her successor, are also blatantly Anti Arab and Islamophobic. The administration doesn’t care about Arabs on campus. At Willamette, Arabs especially Lebanese and Syrians don’t have our voices heard and are labeled as white, when we’re clearly from West Asia.. Both Chaplains are Zionist normalizer and push a hardcore Zionist agenda. There’s no Islamic scholar on campus to mentor Muslim Students. Professors at Willamette disrespect Islam very frequently and the only class covering Palestine, which is taught by an Anglo Protestant from Arkansas normalizes the Zionist entity, pushes a Liberal Zionist agenda, and whitewashes the crimes of settlers. Willamette loves hosting imperialist, Zionist, Russophobic, Islamophobic, Anti Shi’a, Anti Arab and Anti Iranian guest speakers including conspiracy theorists Masha Gessen, Amal Kasser (an FSA supporter) and Julia Ioffe. Willamette likes to vilify people who are vehemently anti Imperialist, especially if they’re Muslim from Western, Southern and Central Asia. Willamette also promotes Haram MCs and almost had rapper Cupcakke who does inappropriate, Haram acts in her videos to perform at the WUlapalooza concert while banning Anti Imperialist rappers like me from performing at the #WillametteSoWhite concert because I exposed the events organizer , the then Black Student Union President as an Anti Arab racist and a Christian Zionist despite the fact that I’m a religious, cultural and ethnic minority. (So much for pluralism). I would avoid Willamette like the plague.

The small campus allows for close friendships and deeper involvement across campus as well as participating in protests at City hall across the streets. There is some pressure to be heavily involved in both clubs and classes but it only serves to widen worldviews and give exposure to new opinions. The Willamette culture can be stressful but the support system available is incredible from classmates to faculty.

Elyssa

It's nice because it is small. An enjoyable community. Everyone knows everyone or will eventually get to know the other students. Most professors seem to actually care about their students rather than just shrug them off or toward a TA. So far, I like the academic rigor and the friendliness everyone on campus has toward one another.

Robert

Not a bad university, however, there is a massive discrepancy between the tuition and the value. With a sticker price of over $200,000 for a four-year undergraduate degree, you would think they would provide an excellent education with plenty of opportunities for advancing their students' future careers. Unfortunately, that is not the case. As a music major, I see that the several pianos on campus are not regularly maintained, mostly due to budgetary reasons, which then begs the question: If the tuition is over $50,000 per year, how can we not afford to have the instruments simply tuned. Unfortunately, the budget is controlled not by members of the music department, but by the administrators for the college of liberal arts, which appear to not understand the needs of the music department. So to summarize, it's not a bad education, however, I don't think it brings a solid return on a $200,000 investment.

Emma

They say a lot of things in their brochure; accessible teachers who care about you, a welcoming, diverse and genuine student body. What they don't say that those wonderful traits are only available to a specific personality type. If you have ever had trouble fitting in, you are going to have a horrible time here, I know I have. Aside from that, great school. You will learn a lot. You will come away a better academic.

Christopher

Willamette University is one of the best schools in the state of Oregon. It has the highest graduation rate among colleges and has a high retention rate. However, as the school is politically active, there is a heavy left bias on a campus that preaches diversity. Overall however, the education is superb, with small class sizes, and an engaged student body.

Kristianna

I love Willamette and the people. It has quickly become my home. Some of the housing is a little worn down, but others are nice its luck of the draw. The food is good, it's easy to complain but it is worse elsewhere. I have fallen in love with all of the people I have met and work with inside class and out.

Tara

Willamette is known for its academic rigor and lives up to its name. Currently, there are many issues surrounding the budget facing the school due to the recession and lack of enrollment. The school is doing the best they can to continue to provide current services to the students but it's a struggle. The biggest is on-campus healthcare which will be gone by next fall (2018) aside from the mental health services, which are already overwhelmed. Aside from that, all the professors at Willamette are AMAZING and willing to work with you every step of the way. The course load can be tough at times but talking to professors is a huge help. There are many opportunities for different clubs and on-campus jobs. The food leaves a bit to be desired but it's not too bad. Housing, depending on the dorm, is what you would imagine a typical dorm to be like. Some of the newer/renovated dorms are really nice while the older ones are much like the "standard" old-school dorms one would usually imagine. There's not a lot to do on weekends close to the university unless you have a car but one club or the outdoor program usually has some type of trip going. Overall, it's not the perfect school but it's a close-knit community where everyone cares about each others' success.

Mary

As a first year student, I have enjoyed my experience at Willamette. I really enjoy the academics here- my teachers are easy to talk to and they provide a managable workload. There are issues with some aspects like healthcare because there is discussion of cutting it, but we do have a hospital right across the street.

Julissa

It a great place, where you get to learn a lot about this Willamette community. Have amazing professor who help you out and are always there when you need them. It's a quite place and safe to just walk around. And the best part is all the shops and places you can go around Willamette, to just going over to the capital and see its amazing parks.

Erica

Willamette was not my first choice but I'm so glad I committed. All of the professors are available and genuinely care about you and your success. Everyone is willing to help each other and the community is incredibly accepting. My largest class is around 40 and the smallest is 14 so the professors know all of our names and know us individually.

Victor

It was my first choice University, was lucky enough to get in. This is a private University in the heart of Salem Oregon. It provides excellent classes as well as extra curricular activities. Plenty of sports available and exquisite food available. There are plenty of places to live off campus as well. The teachers are available to help after class and there are tutors for everything.

Amarit

Willamette University has a lot to offer many sorts of students. Students on this campus are passionate, vocal and friendly and are open to having difficult conversations to make this a better place for everyone. There is always something to do on this campus. Occasionally, one might find themselves to feel out of place or lonely.

Kimberly

The students and staff were very welcoming and extremely helpful. Everyone that I encountered was interested and genuine when they asked about where I was from. The professors were more than willing to answer any questions that I had. The tour guide I had was full knowledge about where each building was. I liked that there were traditions that Willamette has and old superstitions that are taken pretty seriously.

Anisa

As a University in my hometown, I enjoy the antique vibe the school brings out. It cares for its students and the professors are stellar. The school always tries it's best to help you in almost every form. Medically and financially. The professors attentively care for their students and genuinely want to help them succeed in what they want to do. That's the thing I love about Willamette. Everyone is a community and we take a step forward together as one.

Willamette University FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at Willamette University?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for Willamette University is 78%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020, _____ students were offered admission.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back in time the first thing I would tell myself to do is to branch out. I think being part of a college campus is a huge step and going around and getting to know people is so much fun. Another thing would be to be more independent. Its great to have your friends, but being able to get out and be a leader and stand up for yourself is something to be proud of. I would also tell myself to be more involved. If i had really thought about where I was going in life I would do more. I am doing things on campus and in the community now and I love it! Get used to talking to teachers and being ready with questions you may have is another tip. Most of all just have fun with what you do because you will get where you are going with whatever route you take, and do things with a smile :)

  4. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

The dating scene. Oh boy. Let's just say Willamette sucks when it comes to dating. Since it is such a small campus it is hard to find guys that you are attracted to, especially since the classes every year seem to get filled with more and more females. Then again there's the whole thing where the "good" men on campus, of course, have girlfriends. Whatever.

  7. Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.

Willamette is a small liberal arts university where the professors and the administration put the success of the student first. It's size is both a curse and a blessing as it keeps the class size small, allowing for student discussion and participation, but can also feel too small. However, Willamette has every kind of extracurricular activity that a larger school has, and you will find friends for life.

  9. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The small size of our school makes four years heere really difficult to find new minds or talent. We do have avery talented body, but we all tend to do two or more activities because in order for them to run we need to do them. Everyone seems to know everyone's business. I'm not sure where they would expand, but with a bit more expansion, I believe they'd be able to keep the integrity of the school intact. It is sometimes difficult to compete with other schools when we have such a small pool to draw from.

My classes very much reflect a liberal arts education. This semester I'm taking Latin Prose, Ancient Middle East History, Close Reading and International Politics. Not at all. I'm sure your parents would love to hear your voice as often as possible. I call my parents every night. So does my roommate. Other folks call their family once a week or two. It really is up to you, but try to keep in touch with your family as much as possible. It'll make the process easier for them.
