It has its downsides— visible and noticeable downsides. However, there are elements of the school that are charming. Plenty of good professors who are interested in your journey, but of course there are some that couldn’t care less. We are human and so are they.

As a sophomore in high school taking dual enrollment classes at Winthrop University, my experience has been pretty great so far. I’ve lived in Rock Hill my whole life, so I’ve seen a lot of the changes, especially when it comes to housing. Winthrop has a few different housing options, like on-campus dorms (which are being renovated right now), and places like Campus Walk nearby. There are also off-campus houses, so there are plenty of choices for where to live. One of the things I love about Winthrop is the class sizes. Since I’m in dual enrollment classes, most of my classes are small, with around 10 or 12 students. This makes it easy to get to know my professors and really participate in discussions. But, depending on your major or the type of class, you might have bigger lecture classes. So, it’s not always small, but the smaller classes are definitely a plus for me. The food at Winthrop is awesome too. They have a lot of options, like Chick-fil-A and Starbucks, which are great when I want something quick. There are also smaller places like Mien Bowl (an Asian food spot) and Fresh Vibes (a smoothie bar) that I really enjoy. The campus also has a cafeteria with a lot of variety, and the menu changes every day, so it doesn’t get boring. My favorite part is the soft serve ice cream machine, along with all the other desserts! Winthrop has so many fun things to do, no matter what you’re into. Whether it’s Greek life, the arts, or staying active, there’s something for everyone. The sports facilities are free for students, and they’re great. They have an Olympic-sized pool and a lot of different workout machines, so it’s a good place to go if you want to stay in shape. There are also tons of clubs and activities to get involved in, like the fashion club, the art club, and even two dance teams! If you’re into Greek life, they have all 9 of the Divine Nine fraternities and sororities, which makes it a cool part of campus life. I especially love being able to see these fraternities and sororities and get a feel for whether I’d potentially be interested in joining one. Even though my experience at Winthrop isn’t exactly the same as a normal college student’s, I still feel like I’m getting a good sense of what the school is like. I’m taking Spanish 250-600 as part of my dual enrollment, and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Overall, I’d rate Winthrop University 4 out of 5 stars. It’s a great place with a lot to offer, but I do wish there was more diversity among the professors. Most of the professors I’ve had are great, but I think more diversity in the faculty would make the experience even better.

My opinion on Winthrop University was that the atmosphere of the campus was welcoming and refreshing even though I went on a tour in the summer. I could feel the positivity from the students and counselors who worked there. Their campus awareness is outstanding especially with the Rock Hill community. They are involved in the community, which is a good thing, since everybody knows literally everybody which is cool just in case something happens in the community you and your friends are able to find out quickly through the app that they have for the students. Not to mention, even if you are a quiet person like me, they have different clubs on the campus where you can interact with such as anime club, an all-girls club, frats, sororities etc. Also, they have study-abroad students who attend this college. The diversity on campus is awesome also.

Emma

I personally love Winthrop. It is a very open-minded campus and it is very easy to find the community here. I have never felt unsafe when walking aro

Abigail

I enjoy the campus life and have not run into a lot of problems while I've been here for two years. The university is good enough, but it is not the best. I love the faculty and staff in every building on this campus. They are always prepared to answer questions and concerns that come their way.

Emily

I am only a sophomore but I have really enjoyed my time at Winthrop. I have not met a lot of friends but the academics have been great and I love the atmosphere of the campus. I have felt at home here ever since my first tour and I know once I graduate it will be a hard thing to give up if I find a job elsewhere.

Shatara

A reallly good school! That's where my uncle graduated

Da'von

Overall is great!

Be

There could be more equality in every academic college because it is not equal. The diversity is only there when it benefits the college. If there was as much funding going into the colleges as much as the athletic programs there would be equal footing for every student.

Hijarah

Winthrop University is a great school, but it has its flaws. The class size is small which is great for me because I feel that I get more attention and help from the instructors. The food is ok but it could be better. The dorm rooms are ok but we did have problems with rodents and fire alarms

Kaci

Winthrop is a university in my home town that I never intended to attend. Everyone who lives in Rock Hill looks down on Winthrop because it is so close and views it as more of a last resort type of school. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Winthrop. My professors are easy to talk to and they are good at their jobs. The class size is small, which allows for better connections with students and professors. I did not think that I would enjoy Winthrop, but it really is a great school.

Kendall

I have found Winthrop to truly be my home away from home. I knew the first time I toured that Winthrop is where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life. The people are so nice and genuine and you feel so welcomed stepping on the campus. There are so many organizations that Winthrop offers that accommodates every single student. My favorite thing about Winthrop are how caring the professors are. Every single one of my professors know my name and you don't see that often at other Universities. At Winthrop, you are more than just a number. They also have office hours that are reasonable so if you have any questions or just want to talk you can visit them. If someone is looking for a college where they feel comfortable and homey, I would definitely recommend Winthrop!

Katelyn

My overall opinion of Winthrop University is one of high appreciation to the campus and its professors. I was a student at Winthrop for two years before transferring to another college for personal reasons. I developed some of the most valuable relationships with the student body and my mentors that I will cherish them for the rest of my life. Winthrop University is a truly amazing school.

Nia

The price is incredibly high and honestly not worth it. I faced several obstacles as a student of color due to lack of diversity among faculty and staff. Overall I felt unsupported by the university when I was a current student. The quality of the education is slightly above average, but ultimately varies depending on the program you are in.

Yesmine

It is a amazing school. There is something to do for everyone. The dorms could be a little bigger and nicer for freshman. Also there is always something to do on and off campus. The academics are also good especially since it’s a smaller class size compared to their colleges. There is a more hands with the professors as well.

  4. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst part of Winthrop is the rising tuition. Tuition just increased again for the upcoming year, making it more difficult to pay. Books alone are expensive, along with the extra activities you may want to do, such as taking a trip to Carowinds (8 miles away), or go to a movie. Those costs, plus books/ necessitites, along with the struggle to pay for tuition makes you feel defeated, making your goals and dreams harder to accomplish, as if they weren't hard enough (also, if your dreams seem easy to accomplish, you havent set your goals high enough! :))

  14. What are the academics like at your school?

My favorite class so far would either have to be my Web Design class, where i learned HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and JQuery, or my HMXP class, which was basically an English class where there would be discussions held everyday on things we read for homework. Class participation, that i have noticed, is very common. Participation counts a lot in many classes, not all, but many. Students at Winthrop are really competitive and will make you work harder to improve yourself. I am a Web Application Design major which is a concentration under Digital Information Design. My major is under the business department. Everyone in this department is so friendly and welcoming. If you have any questions, there is no need to be afraid to go during office hours and ask. I had to go many times to a professor because i just simply could not figure something out in class and just didnt understand it.
