Attending my HBCU, Claflin University has been the best decision I have made yet. It is a fun, safe, and amazing place to learn and meet new people! With small class sizes, Claflin allows you to have a unique learning environment where you can get to know your professors!
Maurice
I love Claflin because my mother is an alumni. Claflin is family oriented, small and most of all so far have provided me a great education. My first semester, I struggled with my identity there and coming from Texas. In the end, the challenge was worth it.

Just like anywhere you go, you are in control of your destiny and your experience. You may have to go outside of your comfort zone at times but you won't regret it. Life's what you make it and the illustrious Claflin University can and will point you towards a positive, prosperous future.

Best HBCU

I actually love Claflin University. I didnt want to come here at first because it look too old and lame. But once I actually got there I LOVED it and im glad I made this choice . Its like having a home away from home. It's not the best school to come to for an HBCU experience but its still a good school I highly recommend it!

This is a fantastic school. The atmosphere of the campus is very family oriented. Before i ended my high school career, i wasn't too sure that college was where i wanted to be. I didn't think i wanted to take that big of a challenge because i have heard how others talked about college and how challenging it could be. When i finally made up my mind Claflin was the school i chose. I was still skeptical if i was making the right decision for myself and my future. Now with one semester completed, i can honestly say, choshing this school was one of the best choices i made and i would not change a thing.

It’s small but comfortable.

I love Claflin! It’s the best choice that I’ve made! I honestly couldn’t picture myself anywhere else, because I have claimed Claflin as my home. Yes all schools have their faults, but college is what you make of it 🤗. When applying, you must remember that the town is super small, but if you really want to have fun here you have to be creative and challenge yourself ( which makes it even more fun!)

So far so good! Could use a few improvements but no school is perfect. For instance, actually taking action or considering student complaints or advice so that we know that our voices are being heard. Claflin is also a historic black college so and we’ve had the same president, faculty, and staff for about 20 years. They’re used to claflin being ran the same way but it’s also important to accommodate the new generations of students.
Taurence
I love the environment especially on my first day the older students didn't even know me but offered so much help from the best way to approach classes to there own contact information for me to get help. So if this is the mindset of the students there must be a great staff backing this type of behavior.
Mykia
They treat you like family and want everyone to feel welcomed. There are always events going on they want everyone to be socially active and get to be close to one another. They are also people who genuinely encourage others and want to see people do their best
Tariq
The school is great for networking and seeking careers but needs a variety of activities.
diana
it is an amazing place to get away and learn from dedicated professors, and most of all become your best self.

Claflin within itself envisions innovative solutions and possess knowledge and skills that can bring about change called the "Claflin Confidence". Learning to deal with complex concepts and skill sets, conduct original research, and integrate principles from a diverse range of ideas. Meanwhile, maintaining a strong commitment to the community, both locally and globally.

Claflin University is an amazing HBCU! The culture and environment is so welcoming. Everyone finds a place to fit in and we’re all like a great big family. The class sizes are pretty small so you really get that one on one time with your professors. I couldn’t imagine myself attending any other college or university!

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
At Claflin University my eyes have seen much. What I have learned here is irreplaceable. Here, I have learned how to examine people. I have learned how to manage myself. Before I came to school I had an eerie perception on what college was going to be. I assumed the workload was going to be too much and I was destined to fail, but at Claflin I learned that responsibility can take you farther than intelligence. If you had 4.0 grade point average in high school, but you get to college and sleep in all your classes you are bound to fail. Yet if you come with a 3.4 grade point average and you have the work ethic of a 4.0 student you will succeed. This has been the most valuable phase of my life because I am away from home and have no one to blame for my mistakes but myself. I do not have anyone to account for but myself. When I succeed it will be because of the hard work and dedication Keiko put in to her experience, and not anyone else, simply because there is only Keiko.
What kind of person should not attend this school?
Of course, anyone not willing to commit to doing their school work should not attend any college for it is a waste of time and money! If a student is in to the party life then Claflin is not for them. Someone who has a problem with freshman curfew will definitely have a problem with Claflin. Claflin is not a big school so if they are looking for large classes they will be disappointed. Claflin is also a private institution and we carry a lot of school spirit.
What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
The worst thing about my school is the fact that it is such a leader in scientific research but the facilities and equipment for the students are so out of date and just worn that some students are unable to appreciate what the sciences are really about.
Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!
Claflin University is unique because she wants her students to leave here succesfully and as a leader. Under the leadership of President Henry Tisdale and First Lady Tisdale, Claflin envisions greatness and success. The theme of this university is "The World Need,s Visionaries". The people here are friendly and helpful. I have never felt so warm and safe being at Claflin. Its a wonderful university and I would recommend it to any student! When you leave from here people will know you are a Claflin student because you will be a leader and a visionary to the world!
There is no set type of person that attends this school; those that choose to come here are transformed into what we call "Claflinites". A Claflinite is a product of Claflin teachings and policies who is able to be picked out of a crowd - they are people who carry themselves in a respectable manner and who treat others the same way.
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
Before coming to Claflin University I wish I would of known what i qualified for as far as finacial aid. Also, it would have been better to research what all oppertunities they have to offer.
My School is best known for being the first Historical Black College or University in the state of South Carolina. We are also known for our world-renowned choir. In addition to our vocal program, we have a wonderful wind ensemble that has played at multiple presidential inaugurations. Academically, we have a great science programs and majors. We have one of the most aesthetically pleasing campuses in the state.
Claflin is a great school for people who don't want to be overwhelmed coming into college. Claflin students have ALOT of school pride. I will always remember how they welcome the incoming freshmen for the upcoming fall semester. Claflin do have curfew for freshmen students but after you get used to it and start to follow it, they usually extend it.
In Claflin's classes, the professors know their students by their full name. At Claflin, there are many ways to get tutoring or help for classes. Students are competitive but only just so they can get the best grade.
Classes at Claflin depend on your major. Biology majors have the most classes per semester. But mass communication has the least around 12 credit hours.
All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA.
Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
100% of students attending Claflin University receive some sort of financial aid.
86% were awarded federal grants.93%received federal loans. Many students do also need to apply for additional private student loans.
