I would tell myself to go in completely focused on school work. Don't second guess myself and be confident. I would also tell myself to not be so wrapped up in my boyfriend. Stay social and have fun.

What's unique about your campus?
There's a lot of activities to do on the weekend such as Late Night. Late Night is great! It's every Saturday night, and each night there's a different theme. Also each night, there are some different activities. There's always a dance floor to get the groove on. One time there was a caracature artist. She drew pictures for free! Those things at amusement parks run about $30-40. It's always a great way to have fun. Guests are only a $1 if they aren't a student at the school. Saturday nights are never boring.

What kind of person should attend this school?
Anybody ready to focus, and take full advantage of their learning opportunities, would be perfect for Ball State. Ball State offers a variety of programs, groups, and help for all kinds of students with different backgrounds. I think the majority of people would fit in, and enjoy their years on campus. The teachers and students are accepting of all people, and are more than willing to help when asked.

I wish I would have known that importance of actually applying for scholarships, instead of ignoring my parents when the encouraged me to fill them out.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
My school is dwarfed by the two powerhouse schools of Indiana, Indiana University and Purdue University. Ball State is a great school, and I wish that it woudl be given a little more credit. I also wish BSU had more recognizable name, such as Indiana University.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
Students at Ball State have a reputation for being immersed in alcohol, rather than learning. When many think of Ball State University students, their minds instantly jump to images of wild parties, crowded bars, and drunk students stumbling all over the place. In reality, this is not what ALL Ball State students are doing. A small portion of the student body engages in regular alcoholic activity, while a larger portion can be found participating in one of the university's student groups or clubs. The media coverage tends to center around the negative aspects of Ball State University students and therefore tends to allow outsiders to view the students only in that sense because that is the only view they are given.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
I absolutely LOVE it here at Ball-State University! There are about 15,000-20,000 students that attend Ball-State each year making it large, but not large enough that you will feel overwhelmed. Another nice feature is that the campus is not extremely spread out. Usually a student can walk from one end of campus to the other in about 10 minutes. The class sizes are good as well. Most of the classes I have been in only have around 20-30 students.
One of my favorite aspects is that the University works hard to provide students with several entertainment opportunities each week. For example, each Friday night the University Program Board shows a movie that is out of theaters, but not out on DVD yet. Then on Saturday nights this same organization will host a big party called Late-Nite with all kinds of fun activities such as bowling, dancing, games, and more!
Finally, Ball-State has gone out of its way to make sure that students always have access to necessary technology and transportation. Many sources, have reported that there is a 1:1 ratio of students to computers. So no matter when you need access to a university computer, you will be able to find one available! There are also several shuttles/buses that can not only get you around campus, but also around Muncie! Muncie has allowed Ball-State students to ride their public transportation (MITS buses) for free allowing students to get what they need off-campus with ease whether they have a car or not!

What are the academics like at your school?
Within the last few years, Ball-State University has really stepped it up academically. Incoming students now need to have higher GPA's and grades in order to be accepted in to the school. Students attending the university now need to receive a grade of C or higher in order to pass a class. However, not all departments have the standard 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, 80{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, 70{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} grading scale. For example, the grading scale in the school of music is much more intense. In fact, anything lower than a 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} is considered to be failing.
Generally, most students genuinely care about their grades and will work hard in their classes. So if you are interested in coming to Ball-State, you must be willing to study! But don't let this frighten you. The classes here are great! Most of my classes are fairly small--usually around 20-30 students and the professors know how to make the class interesting. You'll soon find that you enjoy the work for these classes.
Another great aspect of Ball-State's academics is the Honors College. The students that are accepted into this college are in for a real treat! These honors courses are set-up quite differently than typical courses. Many of them are primarily discussion based and there are several interesting course subjects that you would not otherwise have access to. Some of the other perks that come with the honors college is priority course scheduling, an opportunity to live in newly renovated and air-conditioned honors dorm, and extended access to books from the library. So if you have the grades and you're interested in a different kind of learning experience, you should definitely look into the Honors College!

Why did you decide to go to this school?
I decided to go to Ball State after having gone to two other schools in Indiana. I started out at IU Bloomington and soon found myself to be in culture shock due to the new population size and atmosphere (maybe the freedom as well). So I then went to the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. While USI was a very friendly and welcoming school, it was at least a 4th the size (or less) of IU and I felt as if I were missing out on what was supposed to be the 'real' college experience. At Ball State I found the welcoming atmosphere, where I could take control of my college experience, perfect. It wasn't overbearing and scary, but it wasn't like going to a amped-up high school, it was what I pictured a college to be like. That's why out of all my choices, Ball State was finally the right one.

What do students complain about most?
This Weather! Dear me, it is icy, snowy, and freezing 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the time you will be enrolled in school here at BSU. Before I arrived, students told me the winters would be bad, but I had no idea. Walking to class becomes even more of a task when you've fallen on polished ice sidewalks numerous times and your snot is sliding horizontally across your face because of the frigid wind. Don't count on the bus system, charter system, or campus escorts to help you out too much during these hard times either. They're just as occupied trying to preserve body heat as you are. My advice: layers, hot drinks, carpooling, and scheduling classes before the sun goes down and Muncie turnd into an arctic tundra. Good luck and bundle up aspiring students!

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
Not at all. The perceptions of Ball State students is largely negative; that we're slackers, that we're only here to party. It's just not the case. Of course there are some students like that, but many of my classmates are very focused, intelligent, and actively involved in a clean campus life.

How often should I phone home? Is once a day too much?
It really all depends on how close you are with your family and if you are more depend on your parents or if you are independent. Some students have no problem talking to their parents every day, I would say that as the year goes on, the phone calls will become a little less. It's okay to branch out and become independent from your parents, afterall, college is the time in your life when you become the person that you are meant to be, so have fun with it, and call them when it feels natural to!
