I believe albany state university is a good HBCU and the students there are friendly and the classes aren’t so big so it’s possible that you could get one on one time with professors the food is excellent and you have many options to choose from and sports teams are good

I believe that albany state is a conflicting school. I say that because the campus life is great and has many advantages, but things like financial aid are horrendous and needs to be improved.
Danielle - 04/09/2020
It’s a great school with a great education program.
Kayla - 03/16/2020
It is a low cost school in which most professors teach you and are there to help you. The student culture is very individualistic (I guess that the right word). When you’re walking around campus, everybody is focused on themselves and only get together, outside of extracurriculars and classes, to study which is very rare. I am not fond of this culture, but it is better than a party culture in a school. There are positives and negatives in this campus like everything in life.

Albany state is a student and family friendly school. If you need help with studying there are so many people you can talk too. My favorite would be the activities because there is so much to do here. It’s not boring and even the teachers are helpful.

Where to begin, the Freshmen dorms are really nice even in shared rooms there is a door between the A side and the B side so there is some element of privacy. We share the bathroom with your roommate so only two people sharing and they provide a small kitchenette. Most students are very friendly and welcoming. The school offers a variety of disciplines to to study. I'm studying Criminal Justice and didn't have any issues getting into my program. The admissions process was simple and quick once I submitted all of the requested documents I was immediately accepted. The school is small and nice for a first time Freshmen's first time away from home. People really make you feel welcomed.

Before attending Albany State University, I had heard of the city as well as the university, and to be honest, it didn't interest me. That was until another college campus recruiting adviser ask me had I consider Albany State University. I knew I wanted to attend a historically Black college or university, but Albany State wasn't on my radar. So I applied and was immediately accepted, which was encouraging for a recent high school graduate. Upon attending my first orientation, I was amaze at the spirit and the closeness of the staff. They made me feel that they were there to help me achieve, regardless of any situation. After my first semester, the feeling is still there. The professors, the faculty and staff, and the entire student body make me feel, no it make me know, that I made the right choice. The Albany State University atmosphere you can't beat, it's like family.

My overall opinion of ASU would be that it's a good school it needed a lot of improvement. There are a lot of issues that are wrong with this school that can easily avoided with better planning. This is the only school that barley gives students scholarships. There are more students here who took out loans than students who were given scholarships by the school. The school's actions are not in the best interest of the students which is where they should be.

Albany State University is a really fun college to attend. There’s always something going on. If you like to party then Albany State University would be the best college for you. The professors are always available when you need them. The advisors really help you. The campus food is okay, but it’s the same thing every week.

However Albany State University has absolutely amazing. The Fraternity and Sorority life really operates like a caring family/ Community. The Student Union was a Pleasant surprise. From the food options, to the games and the layout was great to see. Would love to go back and see more what the campus has to offer

It’s a good school especially when you make use of the resources that’s available. The house is getting better with all the renovations that’s been happening. Campus food has gotten as well it still need more healthier options but again more improvement. I genuinely like this school and as for a state university it was totally worth it. Sometimes it’s a home away from home but I still come in contact with so many different people.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
If I could go back to my senior year of high school, i would tell myself to get involved. Although I'm very involved now, I wasn't my freshman year. I felt like I missed out on a lot of things. Well I actually did. But now college life for me is so fulfilling. I would also tell myself not to get so involved that I couldn't keep up with my school work but just enough so I won't have to sit in my room all day and night. Also so I would tell myself to try new things. Stepping outside of my comfort box really helped me find who I was and what I wanted to be. I also met so many people and got to network with different people. So I would suggest to myself to get involved and to try new things.
What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
The most frustrating thing about Albany State University is that there is not enough diversity among the student body. The students body is made up of mostly African Americans. I wish that there were a more of a variety of people, so everyone can be exposed to different cultures and customs.
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
I wish someone would have told me about the lack of job opportunities in Albany. For someone who stays off-campus and doesn't receive financial support from my family it is hard to pay bills month to month.
What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
It is a party school, instead of it being a school. There is a party every week and everyday. If freedom and learning came as in equal experience it would be much easier for this school to keep their students focused so that they can graduate on time or graduate at all. Unlike most schools, this learning institution only care about the students that pay the most money. Other students that do not have financial aid do not get much attention and often times drop out, thinking no one cares about them and their future.
I believe the best thing about my school is that it is an HBCU (Historically Black College& University) .It is great to have the knowledge of how the school was made from the founder to other historical facts the school has to offer. It is also a diverse school of not just African American students but many other races as well and it is a great place to learn and network with many people from the United States as well as other countries.
What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
I brag about how my school is family- oriented. Everyone is really friendly and we show true southern hospitality. The professors and staff at Albany State University really become your family. They look out for you and help you the best way that you can.
the classwork is depends solely on the professor. Some are basic and others require tons of studying. All of my professors have been welcoming whenever I need help. ASU also has study tables throughout the week, to give extra help.
i truly have a love/hate relationship with ASU. some days I love it! the football games, fashion shows, homecoming week, student activities, and just being surround by my fellow students. Even though asu is a HBCU, everyone here is so different, and I love it. And the overall atmosphere on campus is comforting, something i really didnt appreciate until later on. But then there are days when i cant wait to transfer. Financial aid is a pain, they are so slow to do anything and everything, not enough student parking, gross cafe food, unorganized departments, and defunct computer labs. Every time I go to print something off the printers NEVER working.
What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
The stereotype of ASU is that everyone is a slacker or parties alot. Even though there are alot of people here just to party, hook up, and smoke, there are some people here trying to reach their goals and get an education.
All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA.
Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
91% of students attending Albany State University receive some sort of financial aid.
69% were awarded federal grants.75%received federal loans. Many students do also need to apply for additional private student loans.
