I love the community that Bowie has created. For the most part everyone is kind, welcoming, and willing to help when you need it. Bowie has given me a great experience for my freshman year. I also love the culture of the school, they include every race and is great at displaying diversity.

I started to attend Bowie State University because it's closer and more affordable than other universities in Maryland. It's a fifteen minute drive from my home to the university that's known to be one of the best for Nursing which is my major currently. What I liked the most is the science building which is where I'm going to spend most of my time during my years in Bowie State when I get into the Nursing program. I love how the facilities look like, from the simulation rooms to the classrooms for lectures. I'm so excited to be able to have the opportunity someday to spend my time in those rooms and practice new skills I'm going to need in my career as a nurse.

What attracts me to Bowie State University is its strong sense of community and purpose. There's something powerful about attending a school with such a rich history, especially one that empowers students of all backgrounds. The culture at Bowie State feels supportive and vibrant. It's more than just a place to take classes; it’s a space where people grow, connect, and build toward something meaningful. One thing that really stands out to me is the computer science program. I love that it doesn’t just focus on technical skills, but it also encourages creativity, innovation, and leadership in the tech world. From what I’ve seen, Bowie State prepares students for the real world with hands-on experiences and research opportunities. That’s the kind of learning environment I’m looking for. One that challenges me and gets me ready for the future.

Prospective04/10/2025

My name is Tamika Patterson, and I’m a 17-year-old senior at Old Mill High School in Millersville, Maryland. As a first-generation college student coming from a single-parent household, my college decision means more than just picking a school it’s about finding a place that feels like home, where I can grow, feel supported, and be surrounded by people who understand where I come from and where I’m trying to go. That’s exactly what I see in Bowie State University. What draws me most to Bowie State is its strong sense of community and the history behind it. As Maryland’s oldest HBCU, Bowie has a legacy of uplifting and empowering students of color, and I want to be a part of that legacy. I’m especially interested in the psychology program. I’ve always been curious about how people think and feel, and I hope to one day become a counselor or therapist to help others, especially those from underserved communities like mine navigate life’s challenges. Bowie State also stands out to me because of its student organizations and campus life. After having to give up volleyball, something I played for five years, I’ve been looking for a new way to connect with others, get involved, and find a new sense of purpose and Bowie offers so many ways to do that. Attending Bowie State would be more than just getting a degree. It would be me taking back my future, building something better for myself and my mom, and becoming part of a community that supports and believes in students like me.

One of the main factors that attracts me to Bowie State that makes me interested is its digital media design major program, all of which are essential to my career aspirations in digital design. I'm excited to learn from professors who are experienced in the field and to engage in hands on projects that will allow me to build a strong portfolio and other such projects. I am also excited about the opportunities to connect with other by being in strong academic programs, supportive community, and the vibrant campus life it offers. As an incoming freshman. I would mostly want to be involved in student organizations, leadership programs, and community service initiatives will help me grow both personally and professionally. I also look forward to participating in Campus events that will allow me to connect with like minded peers and make lasting memories. I Overall believe Bowie State University is the perfect place for me to achieve my educational goals while becoming part of a dynamic and supportive community.

After making a visit to Bowie, I knew it was the campus for me. The staff and students were warm and welcoming, and it was truly an all-around vibe! The feel of the campus was what I was looking for and the available resources are what I feel with help keep me on track and focused on my goals. I hope to get back into track and working out during my time on campus and I hope to build a student bond with my fellow classmates. Looking forward to the Fall. The only complaint I have because my family likes to plan things out is I wish the offices were timelier with information.

Bowie State is a very great historical black college that I've seen care about their students. There are so many different events, activities, classes, get togethers every day on campus so there is never a dull moment. Everyone is like family because its always someone that knows someone. We all are their for our own purpose but we all share that Bowie State connection with each other.

I think Bowie State, needs to reduce the pressure of tuition on international students struggling without jobs, at least give us the benefit of the doubt and credit us the tuition if anything. Because they would prefer to kick you out of school and out of school means paying your tuition before attending or even selecting classes . In summary let them allow student to build credit with the institution.

My overall opinion about my school/college which is a Bowie State University is that if you’re looking for a HBCU and you live around that area then that is a good school for you to attend. The in state tuition is on one of the cheapest in the whole entire state of Maryland which also gives it a plus when you’re applying for college which it was one of the many reasons I attended this university. But for me in my own personal opinion the professors in my major which is a stem related major or very nonchalant and unempathetic to students or their life problems

Bowie State University FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at Bowie State University?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for Bowie State University is 41%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020, _____ students were offered admission.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I learned that I have to learn things on my own and should not expect the teachers to teach me. I learned that you have to find out everything for yourself and don't expect anyone to give you the tools that you need to succeed. You can pay for an education, but don't expect one in return. This school has made my outlook of HBCU's very bad. I attended the University of MD, College Park before this school. College Park was great and fun. There were always things to do, the teachers and staff were friendly and caring, and I felt welcome there. I always had a place to study and a good meal to choose from. Bowie has already gone through 2 Provost in less than 8 months. I choose not to participate on campus simply because I can't stand having to be there just to go to class. I am in the Honors Program, and if it wasn't for that, I would never participate in any school events. I am not a negative person, but this school has made me have very negative feelings on a daily basis. Do not go there, please.

  4. What's unique about your campus?

There are many things I like about my school such as the beauty of the environment and the buildings, the students and teachers, but what I consider the best thing about my school is the sizes of the classrooms. When applying for college, I choose schools that had a small amount of students, about 3500 to 5000 students, with classes that where small enough for the students to easily interact with the teacher. Personally, I feel that students interacting with their teacher is the best way to learn.

  5. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

The school should not even have accredidation because it is worthless. I do not know how it has been open this long and I am embarresed to tell people that I go there. I sometimes lie about where I go to school because I really don't want people to know. I don't know what the money from the tuition goes towards besides the salaries. I can only get wireless internet access in 2 buildings on the entire canpus.

  6. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I had know that campus life isn't exciting at all and that the food isn't that great. I also wish i knew that the cafeteria hours were early, which isn't a good thing because sometimes many of us students get hungry after hours.
