What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
Hello highschool self. I have a very personal piece of advice for you to get you ready for college: Start working now on getting rid of your tendancy to procrastinate. This will save you from much sleep deprivation, you will earn better grades, and have less stress your first semester in college. Sure, you are getting away with procrastinating on your papers or projects for class in highschool and still getting really good grades now, but that is not going to be the case when you get to college. Your professors will know from the quality of your work, (and how awful you look in class), that you slapped your assignment together the night before. You will not get the grades you are used to with this approach when you are in college and that will shake your confidence. Instead of doing your assignments all at once, do a little bit every day and try to finish your work a day or two early. This lowers your stress level immensely and will give you enough time to have your assignment proofread at the writing lab. You will then definitely pull A's across the board.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
The Freshman Writing Program. For the first two terms of your freshmen year you have to take Freshmen Writing, whether you passed the AP English exam or not. You have to read numerous amounts of books and type, what seems like, tons of thousands of papers. For the first term they even make you have Saturday morning class. I'm talking 20 page papers!

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
There are not a lot of clubs and stuff around to do off campus. Although there are no sororities of fraternities the life is based around the hockey team and the cheerleaders.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.
Our school is probably most well known for for its Encore program and required freshman writing courses. Encore is a program freshman and sophomores must take to become more culturally diverse by watching performances from all cultures. The freshman writing course is a writing intensive course all freshman students must take, and all students are required to do a 20 page research paper. One last thing this campus is most well known for is the art professor Marc Dennis. He is very well respected in the art world and is extremely talented.

What kind of person should not attend this school?
My school is focused on school spirit, and hard work. The freshman writing program is very intensive, and there is a required theater program focused on culturally diverse and classical performances. It is a very small school, and while there are parties, there are none like in a university setting. We don't have fraternities or sororities. Students looking for a party atomosphere will not find it. Hardworking, friendly, and students interested in the world should definitely apply.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
My campus is just beautiful and the surrounding areas have alot of hills and hiking. My school has alot of extra curricular activities and I am able to still participate in a dance group and have leaned tap dancing also! Our class sizes are 10-15 and my professors and I definitely have a good working relationship; they know who I am and are very willing to assist outside of class time. I feel like I made the best choice for me when I picked this school!

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
The most frustrating fact about Elmira College are the required programs they have. They have a mandatory class that all freshmen must take which is about learning to except other cultures, but the teachers don't even teach based on that. And then they require students to attend performances that don't even peek the interest of the audience, most of the audience falls asleep halfway through the performance due to the dull content of the performance.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!
I came to Elmira College because of the scholarship. It was amazing because college suddenly became cheaper. I was a high honors student in high school and had several other opportunities at more prestigious schools. If you are not offered a scholarship, then not only should you not come here, you should not THINK about coming to Elmira College.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
I am a sophomore at Elmira College. I am a double major and have the Presidential Scholarship, or roughly half of my tuition paid. If you were to come here for more than a week while the campus is not gilded for potential freshmen, you would find that the list of negatives versus positives is many times longer. Yes, the campus is small, so you know everyone and your teachers know your name. Yes, the campus is quite pretty, so laying outside during the spring is wonderful. But, the cost, both in value and actual money, is too high. EC has an incredibly backwards administration. It reminds you of a 1950s campus, fake smiles and fake laughter everywhere. I could write of a dozen different things trying to explain to you just how pitiful this school is, but it really requires experiencing it. Once there are no parents and the freshmen have finished orientation, the school becomes something different altogether. If you want a small school, just look somewhere else. Several years of your life wasted is not worth a mere scholarship. I am leaving next year, and then I can finally have a college experience.
