Describe the students at Iowa State University.

Kelly

We are a very diverse school. I dont think any kind of student would feel out of place at ISU unless you are old, like over 30 years of age. Most students wear sweats and a t-shirt to class. That's the best part, its so relaxing and chill. Most students are from Iowa. I believe the financial backgrounds of most students would be average. Students are very politically involved. I think most are republican.

Alex

To my knowledge all students interact.

Amanda

There is a lot of interaction through campus, and it is nice to see people of different races and genders interacting on a daily basis.

Anna

Not great at athletics but everyone still comes out to support which is great. Everyone comes and shows their support for VIESHA which is awesome. Alot of pride.

Brittany

Iowa State's student can surprise you. It seems that for almost every conservative person you run into, there is a liberal to go right along with them. People are kind, outgoing...fun, surprising and challenging (in a good way) to be around. There are endless possibilities to get to know people. Definitely there are a lot of students from Iowa and Nebraska, yet also I've been surprised by the amount of student from metropolitan areas like Cedar Rapids and the Chicago area.

Liz

I don't think any student would feel out of place at Iowa State. Most students wear comfortable clothes to class. Yes different types of students interact. Most Iowa State students are from Iowa. Yes students talk about how much they'll earn one day.

Stephanie

There are literally all types of students

Jessica

I do not have very many experiences with racial, religious, LGBT, socio-economic or other groups around campus. I think students are very accepting of others, and I do not feel like this would ever be a problem at Iowa State. I have noticed that there is an extremely large amount of Asian Americans, however, I do not think this is a problem. I think every student thinks about the future in terms of employment and salary. I have never heard a random person talking about this, but I know that it occurs. There are a lot of different styles prevalent in classes. Most will wear a t-shirt and jeans. there are a few sweat pants, as well as the dressier clothes. I don't think it affects our learning in any way.

Ashley

Iowa State is a very "white" campus, but there definitely is some diversity. There seems to be plenty of groups that can accomodate the needs of people of all races, religions, orientation, etc. Most people wear sweatpants to class, unless they are fashion or design majors.

Alex

Most students wear jeans and sweatshirts to class and many wear sweatpants. The ones dressed up are the ones who stick out as being dressed differently. Most Iowa State students seem to be from Illinois, Iowa and the Twin Cities. I think politics among students is pretty diverse.

Alex

There are a million Asian people here but whatever. I'm not sure too many students would feel out of place. there's a lot of different groups and everyone could find something if they tried, some just don't. I think a lot of students lean a little on the liberal side. That's in a lot of colleges though. I couldn't imagine dressing up for class unless I had something to be at that was formal. I like being comfortable and have never felt out of place doing such.

Amanda

The typical student at Iowa State wears sweats and sweatshirts. Or at least that's what I were to class. I definitely don't dress up as much as I did in high school. In the dining hall, I don't really notice any cliques. I think that everybody just pays attention to the people that are sitting at their table. I think that a lot of Iowa State students from around the area or within a couple of hours away from Ames. I think that a lot of the students are very liberal around campus.

Robin

Most students wear sweats and t-shirts to class but this could also depend on your major. I've noticed that design and fashion majors tend to get more dressed up than the business and ag majors.

Dylan

Students have a lot in common, but yet still have many different experiences even though many are still from the midwest. Students are not very politically aware as a whole, and quite conservative for a university campus. Students in engineering at least expect to earn respectable salaries.

Abby

Most students wear sweats or jeans to class. If I wear jeans to class, that's dressing up for me. At least I'm in class.

Sarah

I do not think any kind of student would feel out of place at Iowa State! Like I said before, there are so many opportunities for everyone here. We have a great Student Government if anyone is interested in politics and having a say in the University's decisions, multicultural Greek organizations, LGBT clubs, diversity groups, hip-hop club, Future Families of America, and many more! The student body is very accepting of all sorts of views and backgrounds. I honestly believe anyone who spent any time on campus would feel completely comfortable and accepted.

Alex

Most students are laid back and wear sweats or jeans to class. People don't dress up. It's not necessary.

Angela

i havent really came into contact with any of those groups...i do have a few gay friends and from other races...so no one really judges. i think any student could fit in fine. some dress nice but most wear comfortable shirts and jeans or sweats. students interact with all types of students. the nerds: the ones that study and play video games, dont go out. partiers: all they do is drink and smoke...class is at the bottom of their list. balanced: go to class get pretty good grades, will sometimes drink, but usually volunteer time and go to church too. greek: all around involved and have time to go to class and have fun on the weekends too. most students are from iowa or the midwest. most kids come from a pretty solid financial background. lots of students follow politics but many dont. they are pretty equal...maybe more liberal...students talk about money in the future...since money affects everything we do

Julie

Most students at Iowa state seem to be from the mid west area, mainly Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, and Nebraska. There is not a lot of diversity at ISU in comparison to what I grew up with, but there are tons of groups on campus for most every type of religious and racial background.

stephanie

The student body is pretty diverse for a midwestern town. It would be a mostly middle-class white campus still, but there are many students from other states and countries here. There is a plethera of religions, but christianity rules. It is a very politically active campus.
