What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
If I had the chance to talk to myself as a high school senior, I would first tell me to stop stressing and enjoy the remaining time with my friends. I would also tell myself not to live on campus as that wasn't a very good decison on my part. My instincts were right and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, but after I move back home the worry was over. Now I am enjoying this experience and making many new friends who are also commuting students. I would explain that I shouldn't worry so much about the money and try to apply for more scholarships and that I do have time, much more time than I think available to do such things. The last thing I would tell myself about college is relax, the real fun starts soon.

If you're an athlete and are going to school to play sports, come to Tusculum. If you are looking for a prestigious school to build your resume look elsewhere. If you need a stepping stone - somewhere you can be noticed for your strengths and abilities - then Tusculum is the perfect school for you, as it was me. I worked very hard and made many lasting connections which have helped me continue my educational and professional careers. There is definitely a support network at Tusculum that can bolster you and push you to greatness. But you'll have to reach the greatness elsewhere.

What kind of person should attend this school?
Someone looking for an over-priced degree. Unless, of course, they're an athlete, in which case they can have a full ride and not worry about grades.

The best thing about my school are the clas sizes, techers and faculty can really devote time to teching each student.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
The block system (taking one class for 18 days, then switching to another class) can prove to be very stressful at times. If you get sick, pray you have an understanding teacher who will let you make up the work, because missing one day of class is the equivalent to missing a week in the standard semester system.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
Tusculum is the place to go if you know you're good and you want to make a name for yourself. It worked for me. There is definitely a "leadership class" of students at Tusculum, maybe about 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, who are involved in everything. These kids "work" 60-80 hour weeks between classes, sports, and student events. Many of them won't mind letting you know they're part of this group either. It's common to overhear students who fit this description sharing their hectic schedules and talking about how great they are.
The administration is very student focused and friendly; the President knew my name and would say hello as we passed on the sidewalk. However, they also work hard to protect the school's reputation with the Presbyterian Church and the local community. Student voices are often muted if it would cause any riff.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?
Athletes. TC is a big sports school and a large percentage of the student body play some kind of sport. There's also a healthy dose of local Appalachian kids who are there to work hard in the classroom, and may not be active students outside the classroom. Finally there are the snobby, prestine, white kids from wealthy families who wanted their kid to "play college ball." This is a small but very noticeable group on campus.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
I was very involved in the school's community service culture. Tusculum is a civc arts school, meaning it focuses on civic engagement and community service. Through my service work there, I traveled internationally 3 times and traveled to numerous states all over the country working in both inner-city and rural environments. All students must take a service learning course where you go work in a community - including international destinations.
There is virtually no dating scene to speak of. Many people maintain LDRs with their significants from home.
Greeneville is a sleepy town. There's some good night life in the next town over, but it's not great. Most students stay on campus, as campus isn't that close to town.

What are the academics like at your school?
Tusculum definitely provides an intimate and up-close classroom experience. I got to know most of my professors very well, and they know you, your history, and remember how you did on that last test. The block schedule makes Tusculum unique - in good and bad ways. Coined "The Focus Calendar," all students take one class at a time for 18 days (three and a half weeks) and then you move on to the next class for a total of four classes in a semester. If you choose a tough major, expect a very very rigid and rigorous schedule once you reach upper level classes. The academics are improving, though if you are serious about going to a school with a reputation as being "a tough school," Tusculum may not be for you.

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
You have to make an effort to break out of those team-related cliques. I did not play a team sport and I made very friends who were athletes my freshman year. As I got comfortable, my circle of friends expanded to include people from all teams and various backgrounds. Something that is true of Tusculum, though it may not be well publicized, is its diversity. It has a large international community, as well as a lot of ethnic diversity in general.
