University of Arizona Top Questions

What should every freshman at University of Arizona know before they start?

Candace

There are endless answers to this question. In high school, you attend school because you are forced to. In college, you attend school because you want to; I learned to WANT school through my college experience. I learned in college how important education is. The importance of education is equivalent to the importance of breathing, in my newly found opinion. I learned how badly I wanted to teach and how much I wanted to inspire those who are intimidated by math, reading, or school all together. It has been more than valuable to attend college because it has taught me how to become metacognitive, meaning to think about what you're thinking about. This is extremely important in being self-reflective, which has brought to me my current state of mind: I have a goal in my head and I am going after it full force, doing as much as I can to reach it. I once heard, "aim for the moon because even if you miss you'll land among the stars." I'm not even looking at the stars, I'm aiming for the moon and that's where I intend to land, one way or the other.

One of the most valuble things which I have learned since attending the University of Arizona is how to be more outgoing. Moving to a new city without knowing many people can be a difficult adjustment, especially if you are shy. Learning how to meet people is an important skill to develop. Joining clubs helped me to meet people like me as well as network. When you join clubs you find people who have some of the same interests as you which means you are more likely to find people you connect with. Along with learning how to meet new people college also teaches you how to think outside of the box, rather than just defining words you have to give more depth in homework assignments.

My time in college has introduced me to a lot of fresh perspectives. Being at a school with such a large student body has provided me with a lot of opportunities to meet new people and expand my social circle. I have learned a lot from my peers and will continue to do so until I graduate. It has been very beneficial to be away from home and away from my parents. It has taught me to be more responsible since there are a lot of important things that my parents can't take care of for me here. I've also enjoyed some of my academic classes. I've grown a lot as a writer in my english class, and have really learned a lot in my organic chemistry class.

College has been the most eye-opening experience of my life. I come from a small town where everyone knows each other and you can’t go to the store without seeing someone you know. In other words, college was shocking! Being a part of a university is something that allows you to grow in many ways. In high school, I thought I knew who I was and who I wanted to be. However, once in college, I actually learned who I really was and who I wanted to be. You have so many new experiences: hard exams, stressful group projects, crazy parties, and maybe even break-ups. All of these things have worked together to make me the person I am today. I believe that it is so important to pursue your dreams, even if the price is a little high. Not only have I learned so much about myself, but I have learned what I want to do for the rest of my life. Four years in college have prepared me to step out into the world and help people. I feel that with my education and experiences at the University, I can finally achieve my life goals.

I have gotten a life experience at the U of A. People come from all over the country to this campus just to be a part of somehting so special. The school is great, the spirit is awesome, and the social aspect is beyond expectations. I have learned so much academically and in other areas that I never could have obtained at home. This school is a community all striving to do as well as we can and have as much fun as we can. We are constantly improving and growing along with the students. The U of A is just a great place to have your college experience change you.

My experience in college has broadened my perspective and abilities to achieve my goals. It has also prepared me for the real world beyond school in a more subtle way. I have been able to learn about myself, how far I can push myself to exceed my limits and be able to achieve my goals. College has not only expanded my educational interests, but also has enhanced my knowledge of cultures and different life experiences, experienced by others as well as myself. My overall college experience has been valuable because education is always valuable and thankfully I was given the opportunity to attend college. It has also been valuable to attend because every peer, class, professor, and lesson that you come across as a student, as minimal as it may be, is something that will present itself in a helpful way in the future. And last, but not least, college is meant to be fun and filled with a variety of good and bad experiences, teaching to make you a better person. Anything that assists with the "growing up" process is always valuable!

I have got alot out of college. I have learned how to work in a group and social environment. I have learned the importance of college and what it can do for your future. It has been valuable to attend becousse I know have a better education and a better understanding of what it takes to get by in the real world. With the education I have I will be able to get and sustain a better job in the harsh times we are living in. I am however not done with my schooling. I am going to attend The Los Angeles recording School in 2011 to further my education even more so this scholorship would help me alot. Thanks

The experiences learned in college are invaluable. Personally, I've developed leadership skills and critical thinking skills, not only through the courses I've taken, but also through various organizations and clubs that I participate in. In addition to gaining an education that will set me up for a financially secure future, I've also improved social skills that will carry me throughout my entire life. Doors have opened for me that might not have otherwise opened if I'd decided to not pursue a secondary education; I've recently accepted a position as a dietetic intern! Additionally, networking with alumni as an ambassador of my college allows insight into career fields in which I'm interested in as well as other careers that I might not have previously considered. Although a degree is important, college offers much more than a piece of paper; it’s helped mold me into the mature adult I’ve become and afforded me the opportunity to foster relationships that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.

My college career has brought a world of experiences to me that would not be possible to receive anywhere else. I have learned to handle life on my own, away from the help of my parents and the high school world that passes you along through graduation to eventually send you off to college. Choosing my classes, my major, my future occupation, are all choices that I have had to make for the rational decisions of what will determine what I am going to do with my life. Meeting people and creating connection build resources for life that may become useful throughout my life that I will find thankful when they are needed. Without having the courage to leave home to a school that the amount of people known from home is 6 in 35,000 people, not growing as a person in education as well as socially was no option. I hope my few example of many that can be listed show that my experience while at college has enabled me to grow as a person more that I could of ever imagined and to continue to further that experience and education is something that I will strive for.

I have learn what college is like and experience my own ideas of college and what people say about college life is not always true until you experienced it yourself. It is very valuable because these experience can make a person grow up and learn to survive on their own rather than be supported by their parents, but still that is not always a fact for some people since some people chose not to grow up in their world. Another experience is facing reality of this world in college and how harsh life and the truth can be.
