What should every freshman at University of Arizona know before they start?

Rachel

The knowledge I have gained since beginning college amazes me. Not only have I learned so much from the just curricula of my classes, but I have also learned so much about myself and about how I want my life to look. I have discovered more of what is important to me, and my priorities have definitely changed. I am taking my classes much more seriously now than I was at the beginning of the semester, and I am starting to make connections between what I am learning in different classes. My mind is focused on the end goal of my college experience: to have fun, and earn a degree that will lead me in a direction that I love. So far, I am doing pretty well on those goals! What I want from the University of Arizona has become clearer and clearer the longer I stay here. I love campus, I love Tucson, and I am growing to love my classes. A college education from the University of Arizona is, for me, priceless. Its value is astounding, considering how far I've come so far.

Though I have learned a lot throughout the last three years of my college career, I find that the most important is really getting a full-fledged understanding of who I am. The majority of students enter college undefined--wanting to find the closest group to relate to; they are eager to develop their own sense of identity. After going through all of that--joining a sorority, changing majors, beginning and ending relationships--I have finally begun to understand who I am. College has helped me define myself and become a much more self-aware woman. Through that, I have also become more aware of my passion for knowledge. I entered school with the privelage of having my tuition and other expenses paid for by my parents; however, after two years of ups and downs with my academics and a near-death experience resulting from a lack of self-control and an abundance of naivity, my parents placed everything on my shoulders. Having to pay for school and being able to understand the price of a bad grade has not only made me a more responsible woman but has allowed me to appreciate school even more and know its worth.

I am currently a Business Management Major with a certificate in Sports Marketing at the University of Arizona. I plan to also obtain a double major consisting of Entrepreneurship and graduate in May of 2013. I am going abroad to various countries in the summer of 2011, in order to gain more knowledge concerning the concept of business around the world. Upon graduation I hope to attend New York University Law School and gain a degree in Sports Law or obtain a master degree in Sports Marketing. In the end, I hope to return to my home state of California and work as an agent or market for one of the major league stadiums in Southern California. I want to be able to work in the industry of sports and make it a more acceptable field for all women.

What I have gotten out of this college experience is self-exploration. I have learned to find myself and who I want to be. I dropped myself in a place where I didn't know anyone. The motivation of me moving to Orlando from the Tampa area up-and-moved to Naples before my move. My brother recieved a teaching job in Naples forcing him to move. We are 7 years apart and I wanted nothing but to be closer to him, distance and in heart. Knowing that I am all alone I have learned to cope with what I have and learn from the mistakes I will make and move on from them. College education is very valuable to me because I wasn't pushed to attend college, it was a decision of my own to accomplish and conquer.

I am attending the University of Arizona to advance my musicianship and to be given the tools to teach younger generations, enriching their lives with the power of music. I believe that fine arts are incredibly important to a child’s development because it not only allows them to experience the grandeur of musicianship, but also surrounds them in a community of solicitous and refined individuals. By advancing my education, I am not only improving my technique and pedagogical interests, but also my ability to influence future musicians. If students find my skill and ability fascinating, their very own enthusiasm for learning will enable them for endless possibilities for their future that lies ahead. The value of my attendance to college will be demonstrated in my ability to educate students.

I have met a lot of wonderful people at the University of Arizona. I have been involved in a couple groups like UA Up Close and Eller Ambassadors and in both cases, there is a great support system. In addition, the Eller College of Management has provided me with every opportunity that I could think of and then some! There is a great sense of community and the city of Tucson is extremely supportive of the school. It's encouraging to be around such a positive atmosphere!

After the first few weeks at college I realized that I needed to look out for myself; I did not have the family and friend support base I once had in Oregon. This newfound sense of independece has been the most important aspect I have experienced in college mainly because it is a segue into adulthood. Besides learning essential life lessons through college, I value this university because I need a college education to complete my career path. I am studying business and taking pre-med courses so one day I will be able to run my own medical practice. The University of Arizona has an amazing science program which has allowed me to pursue my love for science. I am extremely grateful for the ability to attend this university as I know it is a valuable opportunity that will enhance my desire to learn and one day eventually allow me to help patients as a surgeon. College, I feel, is an experience that should be available to more people in this country because it allows for a smooth transition into adulthood and provides opportunities that one cannot experience anywhere else.

Through my experiences so far at the University of Arizona I have learned a great deal about myself. I have taken a diverse amount of classes which has helped me figure out what I want to do with my life. i have learned to be diciplined and dedicated to school as well as everything I strive towards. I have made lifelong friends that I can always depend on. This campus has given me the opportunities to do anything I want to do in life. I feel very accepted at this school and know that there is always help for me when I need it. When I first came here I had no idea what I wanted to do in my future but now I can honestly say that I know I will have a great career and many opportunities waiting for me when I graduate.

I have only been attending the U of A for a short time now and I feel like I have already gained so much life experience and knowledge. I have learned so much from my professors this far because each professor has taught me their own experience with their studies on top of the course teachings. I feel better prepared for life as well because once you move away from your family two hours away you must quickly learn how to survive for youself. Coming to the U of A has been very helpful for every aspect of my life.

As a sophomore in college I still have much to experience in my academic career. Although, in the last two short years I have acquired skills and experience that I do not think I could find elsewhere. Attending an accredited university has given me the opportunity to explore my career options through hands on academic learning and a wide array of internships and outside opportunities. In three years when I am receiving my diploma, I will have gained the knowledge to truly understand my place in this world. The university consistently encourages emerging oneself into the working world, through internships, volunteer opportunities and study abroad. This is so valuable for students to single handedly experience, see and feel how the world is outside of college courses, exams and papers. This allows students to truly understand who we are and what we want for our future.
