What should every freshman at University of Arizona know before they start?

Attending the University of Arizona has strengthened my self-confidence by teaching me one very valuable lesson. I've learned that when you tripped over your bicycle pedal or completely butchered your class presentation, very few people were really paying attention and those that were forgot about it by now. So live like no one's watching. These four years are about you and no one else. It doesn't matter how embarrassing your mistakes seem because no one really cares. Don't avoid going back up in front of the class or cycling back home again, just don't mix up your diary entry with your history notes next time. Everyone who walks into your lecture hall has their own set of problems that keeps them from wanting to pay attention to yours. You can see it in the perturbed looks on other’s faces as they chew on a pen in psych class or as they stumble through the halls, staring nervously down at texts or notes. So live like no one's watching and don't be afraid to try things over and over and over again because no one really gets it the first time.

I'm 31 years; I don't have the luxury to play around no more. I’m about to start school over this fall. I really have 3 ears to get my bachelor. I didn't understand how important this piece of paper was, until last November.

After spending just one year at the university I have learned what exactly it means to be responsible of yourself as well as your finances. Being on your own and being around other students that are in the same boat as you, I have learned that until it is necessary to gain your own responsibility before gaining responsibility of others. You need to know how to be responsible and strong even in the hardest situations/times. This has been a valuable experience for me thus far because I know that in order to be a fully functioning citizen I need to have a sense of responsibility for not only myself but for others in my life/community as well.

I have gained knowledge more than anything from my college experience. I have now came to the realization that it is not about that fancy job you expect to get at the end of the road, but it is more about discovering yourself and the world around you. Way too many people think that a college degree gurantees you a job and financial success, but if those are the reasons for attending college then they will never full understand how valuable an education really is. Ever heard the saying you learn something new everyday? Well, I learn hundreds of things everyday and all of those things helps me get a better perspective of my self as a human being, the culture we adhere to, and many other worldy problems. This is not just a college experience, this is a lifelong experience and that is why it is valuable to attend.

Through my college experience I have learned about what I want to do with my life. Going into college from high school the direction I was heading was completely different. I thought that I wanted to focus my studies on biochemistry. During my first year and a half of college I was able to work in a lab with hands on experience in this field and through this experience I learned that what I really wanted to do was a completely different direction. After taking some psychology classes and volunteering at a local organization, I realized that I wanted to interact with people and be able to make a difference in their lives. Not only was I able to find my true passions, but I was able to get hands on experience and even able to change my mind. The education that I have recieved has allowed me to be able to make my passions into something more than just a passion, but a career that I can be happy in and make a difference in people's lives.

What i have gotten out of my college experience thats of the most value, is the knowledge and the overall accomplishment of being able to stand proud as a role model to my children. Although i am a young mother i have never given up my dreams and goals of becoming a university graduate. Now due to their important role in my decisions, they provide a self motivation that never decreases and can be hard to hold onto for anyone that is juggling life and school. My experiences in college have helped mold me into the intelligent adult i am today by giving me the tools i needed to learn, adapt, accept responsibilty, and above all else become successfull in my career and anything else in life that comes my way. I feel every person can benefit greatly from college wether it is to have a career or to be a stronger more confident individual.

My first day at the University of Arizona was as hectic as any other first day of school, only the campus was twenty times larger than that of my community college. As I scrambled from class to class clutching my schedule to my chest like a rosary, and hoping my teachers would be merciful if I were late, I wondered if every day during the semester would be this fast-paced. Not surprisingly, they were. Between reading eighteen novels, writing analytical papers on most of them, studying for midterms and finals, and working part-time, I didn’t get a breath of fresh air until the semester was over. After spending a couple weeks recovering from finals, I checked my grades online to find that not only had I survived the semester, but I had received A’s in all of my classes! I was ecstatic. But regardless of my grades, I felt that I had taken home much more from the semester. I had formed new friendships, managed to be on time to most of my classes, and finished the semester with the satisfaction of newly acquired knowledge. I witnessed my long hours of hard work rewarded.

There are so many benefits that you get from having a college experience. You quickly learn time management and how to work your way around beginning of the semester traffic. You become more independant of your parents and start taking initiative to do things for yourself, like; registering yourself for classes, buying and selling your text books, and handling matters of financial aid. You also learn how to communicate with others outside of the classroom and create study groups. In high school friends are easy to make, but in college you have to take initiative to meet people. The people you meet will come from all walks of life and will better your educational experience. Attending college has been valuable to not only my education but to my growth as an individual as well. Learning all the things of an independant college student sets you up for success in the future.
