Valerie

The University of Arizona has given me the opportunity to come out of my shell and find myself not only as a student but as a person. My experiences have brought me friends that will last a lifetime, enthusiasm for my future career and the material I will need to succeed. I have had the opportunity to go to school with people from all over the country and visit areas that pictures do not do justice. Before college I always dreamt of getting out of New England and hated the area I was from. My time at the University of Arizona has been better than could imagine but it was valuable in also making me appreciate my home, city and the ones I left behind.

I have learned how to dream during the begginning of my college career and not only to dream, but to make those dreams come true. I dreamed I would become an independent, athlete, dancer, and engineer and it seems like I am putting in the right steps in becoming all of these amazing things. A range of the minorities in which I am surrounded by day to day reside in the critical stages of obesity or diabetes. Not only are these deficiencies show through the majority of the minorities in my vicinity, but many of my family members attain these traits, thus I have a high risk of obtaining some of these diseases. Therefore, I aspire to accomplish the goal of becoming a genetic engineer. Becoming a genetic engineer is not my number one goal for attending college though—my number one goal is to be able to learn the skills and material needed to improve the health of human beings. I, along will not find the cure to all of these common diseases, but can certainty guarantee I will have a helping hand in discovering solutions to improve heart conditions, diabetes, arthritis, obesity, and even cancer.

Of the time I have attended the University of Arizona I learned to be independent. I learned to step away from wasting time calling parents with every problem and start fixing them. College is the start to the rest of my life, so it is important for me to reach out for help where the university provides it and learn from there. The majority of things I have already learned in college would be nonacademic because of how much growing up takes place in the first few months. In addition to independence, I have noticed how much confidence I have gained. When leaving a group of friends at home, finding a new support system of friends becomes extremely valuable. I can now confidently introduce myself and start conversations and make connections that may find friends. Now that a college degree is in reach, I am also much more motivated to achieve the grades I want. I manage my time where I spend the right amount of time studying and stay motivated by receiving a degree. Attending the University of Arizona teaches so many life lessons in addition to an education.

I feel like I have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field. Attending college at the University of Arizona has made me realize how fortunate I am to have the priveledge of receiving a higher education in a setting that is also social and fun. My college experience has been wonderful. The professors here are for the most part helpful and really want their students to succeed. I find myself enjoying the time I set aside to learn and study for my classes because the knowledge and information I have received is beneficial to me. I would not have chosen to attend any other university because I have never once been upset with my college experience and really appreciate all I have learned from being here.

Since starting college I have grown beyond my initial perceived limitations. I have been pushed to become more responsible, better organized, and a team player. I suppose the lesson that has been the most valuable to my life is that I now realize that I cannot do everything myself, nor was I meant to. Working in teams with others to study, on team projects, or even just a car pool to save on gas has enriched my life in a very rewarding, and real sense. I really feel connected now, not just on a personal level, but at college, in the community, and even as a really small part of this wonderful planet. I feel alive and challenged every day, although sometimes it might seem a bit overwhelming all I have to do is remember that we are all in this together, my teachers, classmates, and tutors. I have also learned things I never wanted to know, and more math than I thought possible. As an aspiring engineer my college experience has taught me the language of mathematics and its application. This ongoing experience has, and is radically shaping my life for the better.

As a freshman, I have already received valuable experience not only maturing, but also academically. Being a new and vital member of Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), I am preparing myself not only for the classes that I will be taking in terms of engineering and design knowledge, but also for the future career that I plan on pursuing. This activity has given me the drive and determination to reach my goal of becoming a Mechanical Engineer. Through the schools academics, I have learned how to study but more importantly how to manage my time. With many deadlines constantly interacting with one another, students learn how to do their best work under stressful conditions. Because it is so early in my college career, I have found one of the most valuable things I have learned is just to grow up. Living on your own and being in charge of doing everything by yourself has grounded me and helped me to determine what kind of person I really want to be. This combined with the goal of a degree in Engineering makes me excited for the future and how a few years of hard work can truly pay off.

I have been volunteering at Neighborhood Ministries, a place for children, who extend from abandon and abusive homes, to come into an environment that stabilizes and creates positive influences in their lives. I fell completely head over heels in love with mentoring and being a role model to these children. I finally made a decision to attend the University of Arizona and commit my life to do whatever I can to help children in need. I am currently majoring in family studies with the overlying goal to go to law school to obtain my degree in child advocacy. I can not even begin to tell someone how deep my passion runs to help others. I am now a sophomore in college and I have never worked so hard to obtain the grades I have. I feel as though it is extremely important to attend college so I can move forward toward a future that will enable me to help others become all that they can be. I have such a passion and uncontrollable love for helping those who are less fortunate, and that is the sole reason I personally find it extremely valuable to attend the University of Arizona.

Thus far college has been both extremely fun but at the same time really stressful. I have been provided the challenge I wanted with the career I chose and I am satisfied in the direction my life is taking and the opportunities, friends, and relationships that are presenting themselves by attending college. A college education is truely valuable in every extent of the word.
