What should every freshman at University of Arizona know before they start?

Helen

Although I am still in my first year of school, college has changed me significantly because I learned how to communicate with people; I find myself to be a conservative person. When college started, I met new people from different countries, states, and cities. This improved my life because I was not out going during my high school years and I would normally stay at home all day wishing I could do something enjoyable. College opened new opportunities for me and it created a new person out of me as well. There were things I would never do while I was in high school, but college taught me to do things out of my comfort zone. I find this valuable because I always wanted to break free from my parent’s disciplines. Living in an Asian family, it is hard to let loose, but college taught me that I could balance schoolwork, have fun, and be happy at the same time. In addition, it made me grow as a person, it helped me choose which path I want to go, and I want to use these opportunities and share them with people that have the same problem as I did.

Being a college student has given me ample opportunity to; discover my true self, refine my career goals, and find a balance in the daily hustle and bustle of life. Attending two colleges before entering my junior year, each with their own unique attributes and differences, has given me a larger perspective of what attending college has to offer me. My first college landed me in a new state with lots of excitement but also plenty of challenges ahead. After successfully completing a year away from what I realized to truly be home, I returned to Oregon to reevaluate my college goals and decided to explore new opportunities at my local community college. Throughout all these experiences, I have grown as a person immensely in college because I had to overcome personal limitations and weaknesses. I have learned to find my own voice, navigate a new environments and be open to varied interactions with all types of people. Being in college has cemented who I am and has given me a deeper sense of self-confidence and motivates me to keep pushing forward in new directions to see what I am capable of achieving.

The extent to which the human race is overtaxing the planet is becoming steadily more apparent, and I find that I am drawn to school in an effort to remediate the damage that we have caused. I work in the Marine Phage Lab at the University of Arizona in an attempt to gain knowledge of the infection patterns of organisms as small as ocean viruses, and am planning to travel to South America this summer to work on rainforest and sea turtle conservation; yet I still have little credibility in the scientific world. However my goal is to obtain a degree in Environmental Sciences and a solid foundation of knowledge from the same program. As of the past semester, I have learned more than I could have imagined about our environment and it's ecosystems. It is my hope that this learning curve will continue and that in three years my knowledge will not only allow my voice to be heard within academic circles, but can ultimately provide me with the means to lend a hand in the extremely important job of conserving our planet.

I have gained a new sense of who I am as I develop into an adult, and a more understanding of how society and the world around me functions daily. I have also gained many friends, several of whom I hope will become my fellow future teachers. Attending the University of Arizona has allowed me to explore my interests while remaining relatively cose to home. I consider my time spent here to be extremely valuable, and I cannot wait to see what future adventures may hold. Bear Down, Arizona!

There is a strong school spirit here at The University of Arizona. Here I know that I am part of something bigger than myself. The first club that I joined was Blue Chip. It's more of a program than a club. It is a leadeship skill building program. Through Blue Chip I have had the opportunity to built my leadership skills, work with middle school children, be a voluteer in the community, and build my confidence. I am learning that true leadership comes from service. For me there is no denying the value of a college education. Today I am more focused, more hopeful and more encouraged than I’ve ever been. The knowledge I’ve gained so far and what I will acquire as I continue my education will never be taken away from me. I intend to use my education to make a significant impact in my field and serve my community with honor.

I have gotten a lot of experience by just having time management skills. My time management skills have developed significantly due to the fact that I must work two jobs and go to school full time just to pay tutition and living expenses to a school that I dislike. I wish I would chosen another insitution that was really worth my money and my time.

To be honest I've gotten so much out of my experiences that it's hard to tell you about them. There have been more downs than ups, but since I've been getting more involved and getting to know more people I'm enjoying myself. I've recently found an area of study that truely fascinates me, linguistics, and I want to learn more. If it had not been for my advisors and professors I would not have even considered linguistics or the Chinese and Japanese language. I just want to emphasize that there are people here that are willing to help, you just have to know where to look and have the courage to ask.

As a molecular and cellular biology major, I learned the intricacy and complexity of how cells coordinate and develop into an organism. The classes that I have taken has been beneficial to me, because it has helped me blossom and progress to become a better scientist. I have also discovered the joy in doing research, and the University of Arizona provide students with top notch equipment. There are plenty of resources to help students from different socioeconomic, gender, and/or educational background. People at the University of Arizona are eager to help if you ask for it. Overall, my experience at the University of Arizona has been exceptional and memorable.

So far, out of my college experience what i have gained is maturity. Being thrown into a new place, without parents, without my high school friends or anyone I knew was quit a challange. At first I was so nervous, I kept calling my mom crying everynight. It finally hit me, I needed to grow up. I think college is about meeting new people, learning new things and having new experiences. Its all about how much effort you put in, for what you recieve. There are so many different kinds of people and different oppertunities everywhere, its amazing where you can go if you really take control of your life, and start living.

So far, College has given me great friends, a great education, and an amazing sense of independence. If I had not gone to community college this year, I would never have found my dream school, or even known that I wanted to be a fashion Photographer.
