Washington State University Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Casey

The social and activities portion of this school is what drew me towards it. Because we are smaller than some other schools, everyone scoailizes with everyone. Living in a fraternity since my freshman years has allowed me to make connections with many people in the community. Going along with the activities idea, Homecoming, Greek Week, and Intramurals are a major draw to students. I don't know a single person who isn't involved in one of those three things at one point in the year or another.

Greek Life is a big deal on campus, as well as clubs for the majors. Basketball and football games are a must. Some dorms are friendly and others are not. There are more girls here than guys, but it is easy to meet people and a lot of really cool date places.

Perhaps the most active area of student life is the Greek life. The majority of the parties are hosted in the Greek row area. There are several activities around Pullman, including dance clubs, bowling, casino, movie theaters, etc. On campus, the university hosts dry functions on the weekends specifically geared towards the students who live in residence halls.

I am usually busy with classes and cant socialize too much. I have a small group of friends and go out to the bars with them.

The largest student group is easily the greek community, although its more of a dying trend on campus. I run an experiential learning club for the college of business, we engage in entrepreneurial and philanthropic projects-- start businesses essentially. Its a pretty successful group, with regional and national titles, and recipient of the Deans excellence fund. Football and basketball are life here. . . The dating scene. . . its like fishing with dynamite on friday night if your at the right party or bar. It is 2 am on Tuesday and I am studying and getting hw done, from what I understand or at least, its pretty typical by the middle of the semester. Things get busy. If you don't drink well, I suppose play board games, got to the rec, watch a movie. Honestly, don't come here if you don't drink, you will be rather limited.

The most popular teams on campus are football and basketball and for some people volleyball. I am on the WSU Women's lacrosse team. Some leave their door open but I find that a lot of girls on my floor do not like to socialize with the others so you never find theirs open.

There are so many groups/organizations/clubs/teams on campus, I have no idea what ones are most popular or not. I am involved with the Horse Polo team. We have practice 5 times a week and play against other universities and travel a lot. It's a lot of fun, and cheaper than keeping my own horse in Pullman. We got to go to California earlier this year and play against Stanford and UC Davis. That was the most exciting thing that I have gotten to do this year. Most students in dorms leave their doors open when they are in their rooms. If they don't leave them open, they are usually at least cracked a little so you can tell that they are there. Athletic events are pretty popular. I havn't gone to many this year because I usually have other things goinng on, but most of the people I talk to go to them.I think the only guest speaker that really got any attention was Ron Jeremy. I havn't even really heard of any other speakers that have come. I don't think the theater events are all that popular either. I went to one at the beginning of last semester, and there were only about 30 people there. Well, I'm not really involved with the dating scene. My boyfriend doesn't go here, and we've been dating for almost 3 years I met most of my closest friends by having classes together, or from horse polo If I'm awake at 2 am, I'm usually on the computer The yearly event that is a big deal is the apple cup. It really depends on who you are how often you party. If you're really into partying, probably every weekend. For me, maybe once a month or so, I'm not all that into it. Fraternities and sororities are really important to the people in them, but for those that aren't, it doesn't matter Last weekend was spring break, so I was at home with family and friends. On a Saturday night, without drinking, you could go dancing, bowling, see a movie, go out to dinner, hang out with friends... quite a bit of stuff I go shopping a lot off campus

Club sports like basketball, soccer, and flag football are very popular but you should try and broaden your horizons on other sports. I found horse polo and it is one of the most fun things I have ever done and I plan on sticking with it even after college or at least as long as I can. Greeks are big on campus and I myself am a Greek and love it. Being in a fraternity/sorority helps establish bonds that are better than friendship. Your brothers or sisters become your family and you can't just find that anywhere else. And like I said parties are a big thing in Pullman because there isn't much else to do.

I'm not really aware about which groups are the most popular groups on campus. I'm involved in CHAT--health awareness club. Some students leave their doors open and some do not. Athletic events are very popular--people that never leave their room do so during an athletic event. Guest speakers are probably less popular. Theatre is not all that popular but I think the actors get a group of their friends to come in. The dating scene is difficult--it's hard to meet people in a setting that doesn't involve massive amts. of alcohol. I met my closest friends through one of my friends that was really good at networking and randomly at parties or places where I frequented such as the pita pit. I don't think I've ever been awake on a Tuesday at 2 am. Spring fest, Mom's and Dad's weekend, etc. happen every year. I'm not sure how much people party but I do so about 3/7 days a week. Fraternities and sorotities are pretty important in the social scene. Last weekend I went snowboarding during the day and hung out with my friends at night in the bars. I guess you can bowl on a Saturday that doesn't involve drinking--I'm really not sure. I paint, sew, embroider, read books, go to the gym, watch movies, etc.

Football is by far the most popular sport here, but the Men's basketball program is quickly catching up to it, mostly thanks to the Bennett's turning the program around.
