Witt can either be the place you grow into yourself academically or the place where you waste your college years partying away. As an academically-inclined student, I found Wittenberg's professors and curriculum challenging & on-par with that of my friends who attended more "elite" institutions. You have to work hard for an "A." The profs here know their stuff. They are well-published in their respective fields & will make time for serious students. I graduated near the top of my class with multiple extracurricular, leadership, volunteer, & internship experiences & ended up with a prestigious national fellowship because of the opportunities Wittenberg provided me. However, the social scene here is *very* uncomfortable for more introverted/academic/quirky types of people (like me) due to the culture of social exclusion. Not-so-secret societies (which are basically private, invitation-only drinking clubs) haze hard. Students vie to make connections with the "right" kinds of people to be invited to join these clubs when they start "tapping" during the second semester of sophomore year. It is considered the top of the Witt totem pole to be in a secret society. Some faculty are a part of the societies. Even the clubs claiming to have more noble/humanitarian aims (shifters) have some scary initiation rites that seem to defeat the purpose of their aims. Additionally, the sports teams all haze too, as well as some Greek orgs (especially frats). I heard the hazing happening at night many times and it was honestly disturbing. This school has so much untapped potential that isn't being put to use because the administration cares more about promoting the sports and social aspects over promoting academics or career preparation like internships. The "cream of the crop" are choosing other schools, while many of the students Witt is admitting end up dropping out after a couple of semesters. If Witt continues down this path, then there will not be a strong alumni base to keep this school running.
You can easily fix dorms or serve better food or beautify the campus, but reputation is a more difficult attribute to sustain.

Wittenberg is very expensive. The housing and food services could use some work but over all the people are great and the classes are the perfect size so you can get to know your classmates and professors and they can get to know you. There are many ways to get involved such as clubs, sports, and greek life.

My overall opinion of Wittenberg university is that the university does a wonderful job in educating its visitors/ future students on what to expect when attending their university. Wittenberg university creates a wonderful image of what an liberal arts college should be.

I definitely wish someone had told me that Wittenberg was going through a Serious Financial Crisis before I came. Professors are being dismissed, and this is being really poorly conveyed to both students and faculty. There's been multiple protests in the past few weeks.
However, as I told the student I showed around, there are lots of aspects of Witt that I like: solid student body, good organizations to join, good professors, etc. It's really a balancing act, and I hope Witt comes out on top.

The class size is nice, and small. The professors are accessible and kind towards their students. The surrounds of campus worries me sometimes with what goes around in the towns. Overall I think Wittenberg University is a good place, but could use some adjustments as well.

There was a brief moment when I thought I would be able to call Wittenberg home, however the longer I am here the more I despise it. If you're lucky you will find about 5 people who you truly like, and those people will be lifelong friends. But they are not enough to redeem the overwhelming amounts of faults Wittenberg has. The food served in the dining hall which we call CDR is horrid. It has been documented to have roaches within it, if you are vegetarian good luck finding anything further than cereal or potatoes to eat; fruits and vegetables are rotten and almost always inedible. Furthermore, Wittenberg would rather sink itself financially in order to boost up the shitty D3 sports team instead of using a little bit of money to secure their arts programs. Instead art programs are severely neglected and, despite being a liberal arts school, are severely neglected.

Personally, I believe there could be improvements made to this university. Coming from a big city, the transition was very difficult because everything is very spread out; it feels like students need cars to get to any store which I am not a fan of. The school population itself is very small, but that's not something the university can control, but the way the school has been trying to make up for the low enrollment is by pitching this school to all the prospective students and it doesn't feel authentic. The professors are very knowledgable about the classes they teach and are very passionate about the topics which helps to keep students engaged in class.

What a joke of a University. I have no clue where to begin. I have never seen a D3 university spend more money on athletics instead of academics. This school constantly wonders why they are in debt while they take donor’s money and throw it in the athletic department. Not only that, the money donors send to the athletic department only helps start the project where the university will have to find away to pay for the rest (Debt). This school is the exact opposite of progressive and the students mirror that in the way they act. The academic programs are not built for the future. No engineering 4 year, no 4 year nursing, no PreMed. Instead of building a 50 million dollar athletic warehouse facility... build a nursing building. Build an engineering building. Build dorms. What an embarrassment. Not worth the money!!

Wittenberg university is a place where I can grow and learn as a student. They are always here to help with anything that I need. I feel safe here and know that if I. Ever need anything there are so many outlets. I am so thankful to have found a school that is centered around each students individuality and I know I can thrive here.

I love the sense of community among the students, faculty and staff. Your ability to succeed is very dependent on how you interact and help those around you. Professors are readily available and opportunities for advancement are never lacking. the amount of student organizations that Witt has is very surprising considering how small the campus is (108 student orgs with a rough student body of 2,000). I enjoy that students and staff alike understand that you are a STUDENT first and an athlete or club member second. I also enjoy that there are many opportunities to bond outside of academic settings wether it be at sporting events, Union board sponsored entertainment or parties. There is also an equal emphasis on sports and arts cultures, which is something that a lot of schools do not have. Overall, there is a little bit of something for everyone!

Wittenberg is a great school. The campus is small, meaning it doesn't take more than a ten minute walk to get to your classes, and everything you could possibly need, from dorms to dinner to parties, is on one street. The community is one of the most notable points of Witt. Everyone is friendly to everyone, and you can truly make your experience your own.

Wittenberg is a great college. There are many great people and the academics are outstanding but you have to work really hard to get the best grades. Partying is not a good thing to participate in if you want to be super successful in your classes. The dorms are really old but I think that each building has a different personality. The campus is really nice and pretty and anyone would be happy to be a Wittenberg student.

I absolutely love the professors. They are a student's best support system. They are almost always available to talk and help many students receive internships and co-ops. There are lots of opportunities for research to be done alongside professors. Professors have regular office hours.

Love the culture and how much people love the school and also the small classroom sizes. The students seem to enjoy being around each other and everyone cares about each other and wants to make sure that if someone is in trouble, that the person is safe.

Coming from unique, rich backgrounds, all Wittenberg students have common values that are the foundation of what makes our traditionally warm campus such a close-knit family.
What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
It has definitely made me step out of my comfort zone. In high school all I did was run track and field and participate in a few clubs. At college, its made me want to try all the new things that it offers and it has taught me how to balance school, work, clubs, and a social life. Before college I thought I would just focus on school and maybe a job...and NEVER join a sorority. Now, I'm in a sorority, have a job, am in Cave Club and Habitat for Humanity, and I'm still able to do great in school. I've taken classes I never thought I'd take and I've enjoyed them. Goin to college has really opened my eyes up to all the great things life has to offer and it has opened my eyes up to how much potential i have.
Everyone here talks about the "Witt Light" and the "Witt Family," and while these sound really corny to prospectives, you learn within the first weeks and months what these really mean. You learn to embrace and pass on your light and that the people you're spending these four years with will always ask how high if you say to jump. Wittenberg is my home away from home.
Witt's a small, liberal arts college, and it definitely has that feel. I've been on a first name basis with countless professors, many of them will invite full classes over for dinner at the end of a semester, and you really do get cell phone numbers on many of the syllabi. Professors will go out of their way to make sure you're understanding the material, and will generally be available outside of office hours-even just to say hi. The resources, such as the Oral Communication Center, the Foreign Language lab, the Math Workshop, and the Writing Center, are priceless.
What are the most popular student activities/groups?
There's so much to do at Witt. Nobody's ever bored. Somebody always wants to do something, and there's always somebody else to do it with. While we do sometimes tend to stay "in the bubble" of campus, leaving campus can provide some fun and memorable adventures. Intramurals are so much fun, and so competitive, and the championship shirt is definitely worth it. There's definitely stuff to do on campus other than drink, even if some people say that's all there is at Witt!
What is the stereotype of students at your school?
A stereotype about Wittenberg students is that we are all play and no work. But this is not the case! Wittenberg students exhibit the perfect balance between playing hard and working harder. We enjoy having fun and social experiences while at college, but are also very good at factoring in school work, academic commitments, and extracurriculars.
Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
A lot of kids are from Ohio, yes, and we do have a lot of student athletes, but SO many of the students wouldn't be able to be here if it weren't for some sort of aid. There's a good racial mix. Witt has a lot to do once you stop hitting the books, other than drinking, if you know where to look.
Not many people like a small school for various reasons so a person attending Wittenberg needs to enjoy a small campus. Also, the person needs to be open to trying new things and meeting people outside of where they normally would. The people at Wittenberg challenge themselves and try as many new things as possible. A person isn't just an athlete or just a science major. People do community service, play sports, have a job, are on the cabinet, are in many of the different clubs. A person going to Witt needs to try new things.
The best thing about my school is how small it is. The biggest classes on campus are the science classes, and even those only have a maximum of about 100 people.
What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
I brag about our professors because they are the absoulte best! They always provide the class with their personal numbers and often have the class over for dinner a few times a semester. They are really flexible with their time and are willing to work around your schedule to make sure you are provided with the attention you need and deserve.
What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
The worst thing about my school would have to be the lack of on campus diversity. Our students aren't opposed to it, but the town around us is pretty ethnically, religiously, and politically bland, so differnt people stick out in a good way. But I'm used to a city with much more character and diversity, so it feels like I'm around the same kinds of people all the time. They are good people, but they all seem the same after a while.
What kind of person should not attend this school?
Wittenberg University has a diverse student body; however, most students are deemed "preppy" and engage in drinking throughout the week. Therefore, students who do not relate to this stereotype or engage in such activies may not feel a part of the campus crowd.
All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA.
Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
