What should every freshman at Aurora University know before they start?

Laura

I have gotten a great deal of experience and knowledge out of my college experience. I attended community college for three years before transferring to Aurora University so I already knew the do's and don'ts of studying and succeeding academically in college, but that school was in a very rural area and many of the teachers had not done a whole lot other than teach. Here, most of the teachers have been CFOs of fortune 500 corporations, been asked to speak to congress about biological issues, or have worked for professional sports teams. This has been valuable to me because it has allowed me to see that it is possible to achieve success and it has given me role-models, both male and female, to look up to who have gone far in their careers and now teach because they want to help students achieve their dreams.

Throughout my college experience so far, I have broadened my base of knowledge. I have learned much more helpful information that will help me throughout my life. I have also obtained great social and professional contacts, which I will be able to use for a very long time. It has been valuable to attend Aurora University because it has helped me grow as a person and begin a new life as an adult and begin to prepare for a lifelong career.

Being at Aurora University has given me life skills that I can use. With the help of the staff I have already begun looking into possible career options and have filled out applications to possible jobs that I qualify for in my field. Without the support and the hard work from the faculty I would not know where to begin. Not only have been looking in my field, but I have been earning credits to put towards a Master's Degree. While preparing for my career I can also look into furthering my education and do it in a timely manner. It has been an easy process and I have been sucessful with making a game plan with my future. I could not have accomplished this all on my own. I had great help from the professors and my advisors and without them I wouldn't be this far along on my own.

So far out of my college experience, I realized that I can make a difference out of my life by taking a few more classes and getting that degree. This experience has allowed me to also realize that there is so much more out there the world has to offer. I don't have to work a pay check to pay check job, I can study and learn to do something that I will enjoy and want to do as a career. Without college I wouldn't of known that.

I have dealt with many turmoils while attending my college. It is not because I was not driven to be in school but because the challenge that is presented to me. My professors made is very clever for each student, as well as me, to be challanged to the point where learning different aspects in a topic was fun. Each class I have taken so far and the assignments I have been given, I was fortunate enough to learn from. Although there were times when I did not know where to turn for certain questions, I knew I had my friends, my pupils, that was always there to help when i needed it the most. The greatest aspect from attending Aurora University is the response to help, the guidance that one may need to get through school and with this, I am greatful and am still being watched by all to finish to the end.

Having completed my first semester of college, I have up to this point gained time management skills in dealing with school, sports and a part-time job. As of right now, out of my brief college experience I have learned that it's up to me whether I want to be mediocre at my future career as a social worker or if I want to be great at it. Professors will do their job and assign what needs to be done but it's up to me on how well I decide to do it. I've learned to take greater responsibility for myself. I have also gotten new friendships and good memories out of my college experience. Not only that, I have also ended my first semester with connections with professors that may prove beneficial in the start of my career. Overall, it has been valuable to attend college because I have become equipped with skills that will be useful in all areas of life, I feel as if I'm on the right path to becoming a more well-rounded person and I have met people and experienced things that I wouldn't have any other way.

I have faced many hardships growing up. Between battling several of my own chronic medical conditions, being raised by a blind father and a mother with a traumatic brain injury, and constantly facing financial struggles, my life has not been easy. Growing up in the middle of all of this, I always felt trapped in my life. I had no control over anything, and I felt that I had to take care of everyone around me, often putting myself last. Going off to college was the best thing that has ever happened to me. By going off to college I grew my own wings. I was finally in control of my life. I became independant and in control of everything around me. During this time, I have become a mostly straight A student in the honors program, have obtained two jobs on campus (including an internship), have become actively involved on campus, and have made many great friendships. College has saved me in every way possible. This scholarship would be extremely helpful to me, as I am paying for my own education. This scholarhip would allow me to continue to grow and develop the life I deserve.

So far in my college experience I have gotten many things out of it. I have gotten to learn many things, see other people's different views, and experienced many different experiences. I would have to say that meeting new people at this campus has just been great, and I would not take it back for anything. The school organizations that I participate in have also made my experience great as well. It had been valuable for me to attend college, because I am making something out of myself. I am going to be something in life, and become a person with a career. Just knowing that excites me, and moves me forward in life.

Out of my time in college, I have really learned to become more organized. With having to work and attend school, organization is very key. My courses are my upper level courses that are going to be harder therefore, being able to balance work and school and still do well is a very great accomplishment that I have learned while attending college. Also, that when I really put my mind to accomplishing a task and truly believe that I can do well, then in the end I usually do well. That is one of the best lessons I have begun to teach myself because once I graduate, there will be lots of people telling me that I may not accomplish a task. However, when I complete that task after being told I could not, that to me is more rewarding!

First, I've learned a plethora of different skills that will help me in my carreer later in life in college. I go to the Art Institute in Portland Oregon and so far I'm really loving it. However, I think the most important thaing that i have gotten and will continue getting is the networking with other individuals who are interested in the same things I am. They will be out in the world doing thier jobs as well and it's good to get to know them now so that maybe they can be a good reference later. Mybe they will get a really great job and thier boss is looking to hire someone and they are asked if they know anyone who can do the job, and they refer me to thier boss. It's not what you know, its who you know.
