I am a first year and so far, if I were to rate Cal Poly Pomona on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the absolute best, I would rate it a 7.5. To me, CPP is between mediocre and excellent, it is not the greatest, but it is certainly not on the lower side of the scale either. There are many places where students can go, individually or with friends, to either sit and chill or to focus and do their work. This campus is so big that there is almost always somewhere to go sit without having to wait for a spot to open up. From my experience, the people that work here are very easygoing and helpful, and I feel that whenever I have a question, I could ask without hesitancy. If you want a big social life, you have to join clubs or get a job on campus because majority of people keep to themselves or stay with their friends. It is fairly easy, however, to join clubs because I often see lots of flyers promoting events that are held by different programs and clubs. This has made me realize how even though this school is known for its engineering program, the programs for other majors are equally valued and exceptional to be a part of as well. On the other hand, finding a job is a bit harder to achieve. I recommend using the app Handshake to find jobs on campus and when applying, apply to as many as possible so that you have a higher chance at getting a job. It also takes a long time to hear back from jobs, which can get annoying, but it is crucial to check your email frequently, so you do not miss an opportunity. Even though everything on campus is more expensive than it would be outside of campus, which is very common in college, there are food places that give good discounts if you go at a certain time, which you can easily find out by asking. The thing I would say that sucks the most at CPP is the traffic to leave. It is an absolute nightmare if you are trying to leave right after your classes for the day because that is what most people do, so I recommend leaving about 30 minutes after so that you can skip that traffic and then leave before the next batch of students get out of class and leave. All of this considered, would I recommend this school to future college students? Most definitely.

This university consists of the most anti social students and community that you could find at a california state polytechnic school. I had difficulty creating study groups, getting classmates to converse, participation from peers in group projects, and finding joy in greek life. The only social scene is greek life and it is not a genuine community to surround yourself with at all. I played a club sport and made little to no friends, even when I would pay for friends through a sorority. I could not get the courses I needed due to overpopulation in my major and I constantly carried stress of being behind. I consider myself a very positive and spiritual person and this school took away all my light while I attended. It is not easy to enjoy your days in such a depressing environment and I believe it is bad for any young individuals mental health, even the toughest souls.

I really like it! It’s just the perfect size for someone who doesn’t want to be so outgoing, yet still wants to make friends, which was exactly what I was looking for. I love on campus and enjoy it much more than if I drove everyday! My professors have also been amazing!

At first, my top choice was San Luis Obispo but when I visited Cal Poly Pomona, I instantly fell in love with the campus and how the buildings were constructed. I felt in Pomona I would get to be involved and achieve of becoming an engineer. I know very well this school will help me through university and from what I have seen on the website there are many clubs for STEM and unbelievable programs and opportunities from what I can choose. So I know committing to Cal Poly Pomona is a great choice I made.

As it stands, Cal Poly Pomona shows to be quite a large school that more-than-sufficiently provides students with extracurricular activities, eateries, quiet spaces, and recreational facilities. In terms of housing, both on-campus and off-campus, it is very difficult, as you'd be competing with hundreds students almost anywhere. Professors are often very accessible with both appointments and office hours, but during lectures, their overall quality tends to be highly "variable." Some professors can be really good at teaching the subjects they've been assigned, adding an air of their personality to make the subject more interesting, and on the other end of the spectrum are professors who either heavily rely on online/interactive textbooks to do the teaching for them, leaving the actual professors to either reiterate that content, or undergo difficult/challenging examples. In short, most facilities are great, but housing can be quite difficult, and the professors are highly variable in quality.

raz

It’s not the worst school but it definitely has its downfalls! All I know is come in with an open mind and you’ll be ok! The engineering department does their best to help students, and as far as I know the remaining colleges on campus (colleges meaning majors) have all exciting and different classes!

I haven't properly reviewed it

Monique

I've been at Cal Poly Pomona for over a year now and I could say that the time I have spent there it has been very enjoyable. The campus is massive compared to the previous school I transferred from; and there's so much I have yet to see. What I have experienced so far, I'm thoroughly impressed and proud to be a student at that school. I can't wait for the new semester to begin so I can continue my educational journey and obtain new knowledge that I can use toward my goals.

I think the campus view is beautiful. There are really nice tour guides and just people in general to talk to.Everyone there is very straightforward about what to expect. They have a nice variety of dining places that aren’t too pricey. The size is not too bad considering the huge campus. I really enjoy the school of hospitality they have there.

Itzel

Cal Poly Pomona is an overall very good school especially on the major departments it is known for like engineering, environmental design, and agriculture. As of Spring of 2019 a lot of sections of the campus have been under construction, so while a lot of the buildings are somewhat outdated there will be a lot of new buildings and resources for future students. My favorite thing about campus is the nature. Since there is a large emphasis on agriculture in Cal Poly Pomona, the campus is surrounded by all forms of agriculture like crops and livestock and even has its very own pumpkin patch.

I love it here, I am very interested in trying to attend in the fall of 2020. This campus is so beautiful, it is so diverse and it seems like everyone is enjoying themselves, they seem to get a long well with everyone. This place is so amazing, the academics they provide and the name is has for someone is such a credible thing to have. I absolutely love it here and I hope to attend there.

CPP is an OK school. It's literally the definition of average. The food is ok. Social scene is ok. Facilities are ok. Professors and classes depend on your luck. It's extremely hard to get into good professors' classes, they fill up immediately. I had some amazing professors as well as terrible ones. 70% of the time you will not be able to get into the class you want. So be ready to learn everything by yourself through youtube, textbooks etc. The school is also very crowded. You need to arrive the campus before 9am if you want to find a parking spot. The research etc. is very limited. The elective classes etc. are very limited as well. If you are a person with a clear path, this school will work for you. If not, no one will guide you but this is normal for a public school I guess. If you are on financial aid, CPP is a great option for price/performance. If you will live on campus and get no financial aid, it's a harder decision to make.

Wilbur

I feel as though Cal Poly Pomona, as the students call it, is a very good school with even greater potential. If you are one that just wants to learn and leave, then it is the school for you. If you, however are looking for an exciting and lively experience like movies have lead you to believe college is like, this is not the place for you by a long-shot. It is a bit ironic that it is a big drug and alcohol school but the social life is very little to nonexistent. It is also very expensive hence me applying for scholarships until my fingers fall off.

Jordan

The food isn't that great at the dining hall, but the other chain fast food places are great! The people on campus are really great as well. They are super nice and they encourage you to do your best. Receiving housing is really difficult if you don't apply on time and the suites are a little pricey, but very nice. Overall, the campus is great, lively and perfect for a student with my major!

California State Polytechnic University-Pomona FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for California State Polytechnic University-Pomona is 59%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020, _____ students were offered admission.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would say, Greg, the next four or five years are not going to be easy. Physics requires a lot of commitment and the professors will expect the best from you. They will also help you, assist you, guide you. This is not high school anymore. You are an adult, no one is going to hold your hand and ask for your parent's signature. You are in charge of your destiny. If you do not come to class or do not do homework, the college police will not come after you. College is an exciting time, full of opportunities and driven young people all with the same goal you have: to recieve a better education and make a better life for yourself. There are also missed opportunities, and it can become overwhelming. Especially in the last two years, with the course work becoming more difficult, graduation approaching, job interviews or graduate school applications on the horizon. You are becoming an adult, taking charge of your life. All parents and professors can do is to guide you in the right direction, but at the end of the day it comes down to you, Greg. College is the first step.

Most of our classes are around 30 students. It make it easier for the professor to answer the students' questions and keep them engaged. Being able to sit close to the professor helps you to keep focussed because he can see you and remembers you. It gives you a reason to go to class, your professor knows when your not there. It also helps to build relationships with your classmates. Studying with peers makes a world of difference. I know from experience of group studying compared to when I do not group study.
