What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
If I were able to travel back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would inform myself that there is practicality to high school and to try harder. I would also inform myself that the college one goes to has a significant impact on one's life, and to research all of the schools with programs in philosophy before I settled. Finally, I would tell myself to try and earn as many scholarships as possible, since tuition is rridiculously high and student loans are incredibly oppressing.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
I really dislike this question because I am a person who is really enthusiastic about my school and everything that it has to offer. However, I do know what other complain most about when it comes to Dowling. Many feel that it does not have the best reputation. Those same students feel that this will hinder their future.

What kind of person should not attend this school?
Dowling is a private school so the tuition is higher than state schools, so if a person does not receive a lot of financial aid and does not wish to take out private loans, then this school is not for them.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
The RA's in the dorm do try to arrange extremely cheesy events, but they are not often. There is really no partying at this school, just kids who drink, smoke weed, and blast music in their respective rooms. If you come here, you will be hard pressed to get any sleep whatsoever as many of the kids blast their music on all days of the week for no reason at all. No guest speakers who are important, as this school does not have a great reputation and is so small. Most RA's in the dorm do not care at all, in fact some of the RA's are even in students rooms smoking marijuana with them! Talk about a conflict of interest. This is primarily due to the fact that many of the RA's are of the same mindset of the scumbags who attend here.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
I must warn potential students, during the tour staff really goes out of their way to show you a school with nice students, nice buildings, and no problems. This really is not the case at all, especially on the brookhaven campus. If you are thinking about attending here, I would highly advise that you do a little research on the students that attend here. A collegeboard GPA breakdown shows that 5{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} had a HS GPA of below a 1.0 and 18{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} had a GPA between 2.0-1.0. This really is starting to show badly in the student body. Through my first semester, I dealt with music blasting on weekdays to around 4-5am, theft out of my room, my door being kicked in as a joke(?), suitemates smoking weed in my room all the time, random losers in my room at all hours of day and night, etc. The list just goes on and the same events are taking place in the second semester!

Tell us about your professors.
The professors here show that they really care about our work ethics. I personally enjoy men vs female teaching techniques, only due to my personal opinions and experience. Overall, the professors keep the classes in line and seem to do an excellent job both as teaching to the entire class and one on one .. depending which professor you have.

Where is the best place to get work done on campus?
The two best places to get work done on campus are the library or computer lab. In both of these places, located directly across the hall from one another, there are plenty of computers and printing available to students. There's always someone around to assist you if you need it and everyone is very respectful with noise control.

What are the academics like at your school?
There is absolutely no intellectual life in this school. I have heard many extremely ignorant conversations by nearly everybody in the student body. The classes are extremely easy, but you really do not learn anything in them. There have been kids who have gotten below a 2.0 for 3 semesters in a row and they are still in this school! This is in direct contrast to the policy of "academic probation" that Dowling publishes in its handbook. This school does not care about its academic reputation more than it cares about money. This is not a place for learning, as the students are not conductive to it at all.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?
People think that students at Dowling are rich and that mommy and daddy paid for thier ride to the college. That is not true and I am living proof! I got an academic scholarship and I have worked out paying for some of the classes without any help or aid at all.
People think that Dowling students are stuck up. This is also not true for most students. Most Dowling students are friendly people just going for thier degree and enjoying themselves while they take the path to get there.

Why did you decide to go to this school?
I choose Dowling becuase it is the only school in New York that allows for a dual major. (believe me when I tell you I looked at every single school! and that includes SUNY schools). I am majoring in biology and special education.
Dowling also offers scholarships for academics, not just sports. This really helped me pay for my degree.
Dowling is one of the top teaching schools in the country. More Dowling students get jobs than any other school.
There is a much friendlier and helpful environment at Dowling than at other schools I had visited that treated me as "just another freshman."

Describe the dorms.
I do not reside at the dorms, but from what I've heard .. I noticed that there is a shuttle bus which takes the students to and from the dorms, which is a plus. And I see many people interacting with their dorm mates so the people residing there must be friendly.
