Aristotle once wrote "the roots of education are bitter but the fruit is sweet," and I myself have found this to be true. I am a twenty years old and have suffered with childhood depression and asthma. I look back at my highschool years and wonder how I got through them. In the past that I did not even want to continue. I would ask myself, am I really worth it? I ventured beyond theses negative thoughts once I entered college. I realized I was put on this earth for a reason and I did this with not only the help of a wonderful family, but some amazing educators and students. In my second semester of college I was enrolled in a Speech class which truly changed everything for me on an emotional level. I gave a five minute speech on the struggles I have been through. I realized at that moment that my life is nothing to be sad about. I discussed my childhood more openly then I ever have before, and after that speech a student and stranger honestly said to me "you are worth it ." Overall College has been a great stepping stone for my future endeavors.

I actually returned to college after not being in school for four years, so it was a major kick in the butt. I realized that it is nothing like high school. Nobody slows down for you or gives you special treatment. I also realized that you have to have a certain degree of motivation and the drive to want to better yourself. If you don't then you are just waisting your time and neglecting someone else their right to be in your spot, and they actually want to learn.

My college experience so far has helped me grow and mature as a young adult. It hasn't been easy for me since I have to work 25 - 30 hours a week while attending school. I see great value in education. With knowledge comes power and you can never have too much knowlege in my opinion. Learning and growing keeps me motivated and enthusiatic about what is to come. Completing college is very important to me as I will be the first in my family to earn a college degree. Neither of my parents optained one. Community college has taught me that taking multiple courses and doing the best I can to achieve good grades while working is helping me build my character. For each course I complete, I feel a sense of accomplishment. This has given me more self confidence and belief in myself that I can do anything that I set my mind to. During my journey at community college, I realized I have a love for art, I also have a good eye and am detail oriented. Continuing my education to study graphic design while attending Otis Art School is very important to me and my future.

I have learned many aspects of the law while attending college. I have learned many issues that rest inside the justice system and that it takes more than just the government to fix them. In order for the justice system to work, it takes citizens of the United States to be involved as well. I have also learned that a higher education not only gets you respect from other people, or just your children, that it gives you more of an inner self respect. Since I have been attending classes, I have felt better about myself. When I recieved my Associates Degree in January, it felt like the biggest accomplishment that I have ever done. And to have my children tell me how proud they were of me, felt great.

Deciding to return to school and pursue a college education has changed my life in many ways. Some of the benefits are obvious; such as learning how to schedule time more effectively, boosting self confidence, and gaining a background to progress with a future career. The more subtle quality that keeps me coming back is the ability to think outside the box. I find that in all areas of my life I am better able to cope, problems solve, and see other viewpoints as a result of my education at Kaplan.

When an accident left me disabled, I wondered if I was going to be able to work again in a career that I had planned since I was a little girl; nursing. Injuries to my leg prevented walking without severe pain and I remained under continual treatment. With an ADN, I believed if I obtained a BSN, more opportunities could be possible since I would likely not be able to work at bedside again. Thankfully, nursing offers multiple careers in different areas with continued education. I easily made my decision, set up a Stafford loan, and enrolled in distance learning. During the first term, we started a Professional Development Plan which required us to carefully examine our personalities and characteristics. Using that knowledge, we were to determine our personal and professional goals and how our educuation might affect those goals. For me, that examination was life-changing as I realized I could not reach my goals until I amputated my leg! Everything I wanted to do in life depended on my leg healing, and I did NOT have that assurance. My education and that assignment, I value to this day so I can further my career in obatining my MSN!
