What should every freshman at Kaplan University-Davenport Campus know before they start?

Denise

There is no shame in dreaming big, and do not allow anyone to take that priviledge away. The old philosophy of "shoot for the moon, and you will reach the stars" is great advice I wish I had and will definitely share with those who are tomorrow's leaders.

If there was a chance to go back to my senior year in high school and carry with me the knowledge about college life, the main essence of this advise would be follow your gut instinct and weigh out your decisions. You need to realize no matter how well meaning anyone's advice is, you will be the one living with whatever you decide on. There is a need to pace yourself and examine the courses you need to take and decide on which college has what you need. Although it may be a family members' wish for you to go to the same college, if another one has a better curriculum, then you should do what is best for you. Freedom of choice has a price if you go rushing into things. Even though you finished the herculean load of courses you tackled; it would have been wiser to have taken less, therefore the amount of pressure would have been easier to handle. Also while you need to balance coursework with recreation, you are there to prepare yourself for the future. The future ahead of you is through academics. Take time out for yourself but again balance is everything.

Preparing for the future is essential and an education can help lead to success. A person does not plan to fail but fails to plan. Furthering your education will help you find a path that will not fail you. In today's economy and the upredictability of tomorrow it's better to give yourself an edge to prospect employers. Life offer's no guaranties but an education will eliminate your competition in the job market. Some employers will not look at someone without a degree; don't be this person. To make the most of your time, money, and education research all that is available to you. Look into different schools , see what they have to offer. Ask yourself what would work best for you and your schedule. Look into your school of choice to see that your needs will be met. Do not rely on anyone to find these answers for you. Know your career path, find the money for school, and be sure to take the right classes. Know what your responsibilities are as a student and as a graduate. It's not just about finding the right path but preparing that path to lead you to success.

It sounds a little cruel, but I would tell myself to not choose my best friend as my roommate, and to go ahead and let the school choose a random person for me to share the first experience with. Since my best friend and I already knew each other, we didn't have to go through the awkward 'meeting new people' phase, and instead of meeting the other girls on the floor during out first weeks, we instead chose to invite our friends to stay with us for the weekend. It seemed fun at the time, but now everyone on our floor know each other and are friends.. except for us. If I had chosen someone new to be friends with, I feel like I would have a lot more friends than I do now and have had an more enjoyable college experience during my first semester.

To get focused and compete school right away. I took a 7 yr break between my Associates Degree and my Bach. I'm currently persuing my Bach in Psych with a long term goal of getting my Ph.D in Counseling Psychology. This would have been easier without 3 daughters and a husband. I am going on 29 and am still not finished with my Bach program. Had I went straight into this program after high school I would be finished and starting my practice by now.

Theresa

Your educational choices impact your life more than you know. Take the time to complete homework and go above and beyond when you have the opportunity.

Diane

Knowing what I know now, I would speak with my guidence counselor so I can have some help me to make the decisions that I never made for myself. When your not born into money or considered upper middle class you can and will be left to sort things out on your own. I would take the initiative to do it on my own so that I could of been more successfull as a student and a person.

Ashley

Well, I graduated with my GED in 2005, however, If I were going to go back, I would have talked to myself as a highschool senior and told myself, to save up for college, to prepare yourself for the real world. To gain better grades, my first year, I was still adjusting and my grades weren't great, but I got a handle of it after that, and now have a great GPA. That was basicaly the biggest hit, and I wish my parents or myself would have put some money back for me for college, but they couldn't afford to, i didn't think about it before I decided to go to college two years later.

Sheila

The advice I would give to myself would be, to go to college right after graduation because life has a way of throwing things into the mix and before you know it your forty years old and just starting college. Over the years you will forget certain things and acing that algebra test will be more difficult then you ever imagined. Listen to you parents and go to college in the Fall, do not wait.

Karen

So you actually think you can get a good job without going to college?! You really must be kidding yourself! Do you know how easy it is to fail at a job and have nothing to fall back on? Without a good education on your resume and the knowledge to back it up, possible employers will keep moving yours to the bottom of the pile without even bothering to read it. It's imperative to show them that you are the one they need to fill that position and become an invaluable asset to their company. You can do that by getting your degree and choosing your own destiny! There are thousands of people who are doing just that, and those are the ones you are in competition with. The ones without an education fall by the wayside in the beginning before they even get a chance! You have a chance now to prove to yourself that you are worth everything it takes to be a successful student and beyond that, a successful employee that will one day become an employer and be looking for the same things potential employers are looking for in you now! You owe yourself that!

If I could go back, I would tell myself to go straight into college from high school. Do not take a break. I had a baby right before I graduated high school, and though it seems you should take time off for the baby, or it would be too much, I would have told myself to do it anyway. Having a child is even more of a reason to go straight into it. I will be hard, but it will make you stronger, and get your career going earlier so you can support a family. When you wait, you get too relaxed, and enjoy the freetime, but you also struggle. End in end, my advice for myself would be to DO IT, DO IT, DO IT right out of high school.

Gabe

Take the future seriously, my younger self. Seek a higher education now or you will find your self swinging a hammer for years to come, and that is something that we both promised ourself that we would never do. There is nothing to be ashamed about working hard, but be wise, not ignorant. You will want something better for yourself and family later, but it sure would be easier to do it now rather than later. Not to mention that you would have more fun in college at your age than you would as a married man with kids at thirty years of age. Have fun, but take this seriously. Life is more than a little serious, in truth, but you can still have plenty of fun. Also, you have never thought of this yet, but you will make a wonderful business man in the future. Everyone will agree someday.

Rob

If I could go back and talk to my high school self, I would have to tell myself to go to college after I graduate. It would have been so much easier to get my degree not having to worry about working and supporting a family at the same time. There is no telling what opportunities might have opened up if I would have gone ahead and gone to college.

ramon

Do not waste time with your life. Time is one of our most precious resources. Do your research, ask questions and don't settle unless you are completely satisfied.

Jerome

You can do anything with your life. So don't waste it, make the most of it by going to college and becomming the person who you really are

Jessica

Take more college level courses. Take more pleasure in the small stuff. Save your money and keep taking Spanish.

Tracy

I would tell myself not to delay in getting my BA. I would tell myself that having a BA will allow me to get a better job and would allow me to advance faster in my career. I would also tell myself that by having my BA, I will make a lot more money.

Glenda

Your first two years of college should be used taking your basic courses, so that you have time to adjust to your new enviroment and truely know what you want to major in. So many students think they know what they want to do, but end up changing their minds after a little time in college, and the time I spent on "major" classes was wasted and cost me another year in college.

Brandiez

I would have told myself to go away to school; that's why student loans are there. I would have told myself not to stop going. Even if it was only 1 class a semester.

Tina

It is difficult to go to college when you take time off after high school, go right away. Work hard in high school in order to obtain scholarships because college is expensive and pays off in the end. In order to better your self and support your family you need an education primarily a bachelors degree. You are competing against many intelligent applicants so you need to stand out from the rest.
