Morgan State University Top Questions

What should every freshman at Morgan State University know before they start?

Just a year ago I was confident and undefeatable with the ability, maturity, and sincerity to own the path I have chosen without straying from my objectives. The road changes with each choice made and a person must endure enough to discover the person they want and need to become, while still holding onto the traits that will make for a fulfilled, happy life. The simple decisions cause a rollercoaster of events to unfold and only the strongest, with the best support system can reach their goals while they stray from the path to find themselves. The future holds great mysteries for all of us, while some are the happiest moments of our lives and others are the most heart wrenching, they are all beautiful in a unique way that shapes some part of our soul. Simply stay strong. Stay strong when you feel like you cannot and stay strong when you think you already are.

Knowing what I know now about college life to prepare I would tell myself to be sure of what I want to be. I've learned that if you trully know what you want to be half of the battle is already won. There are many things out there to help you be what you want but you have to know. See you can be successful but it's hard to be successful when you don't know what you want to be successful in. Since being out of high school I've changed my major many times, worked different jobs, and looked at many different schools. But now since I have a brighter vision of what I want to be there's a lot in the process that I can avoid. If I would've know deep down then I I would've seen the help out there for me and gone down that path. There's nothing to look back to for a person who trully knows what they want because they don't look back. They're always looking forward. Much time, money, and energy could be saved if a person knows. THAT'S THE KEY!

Do not listen to your Mother when she says "I did not attend college, you don't need to go either". What horrible advice I've spent years working hard just to survive now it is time for me to stride to improve life for me and my children and their future generation. I would also advice myself error on the side of caution in all things, when you have evaluated the cituation, then make a decision. Don't rush in.

Anjanae

Anjanae, I'm writing you to let you know that the next four years will be one of the most beautiful, frustrating, confusing, and eye-opening times of you life. You'll have the opportunity to live with people so different from yourself that it will expose you to things that you never knew existed within you. I know that sometimes you feel like you can't relate to your peers and you'll always be the odd man out. While I'm afraid these thoughts will probably never go away, trust me when I say that you will meet so many others who share your interests. Be true to yourself and stay humble. You have a tendency to inadvertently become the teacher's pet. Accept it. It will work to your benefit in the long run. This transition will be diffucult, as you will begin to discover some parts of youself that you're trying so hard to suppress. Embrace it all, it will make life so much easier. By the way, brush up on your Portuguese, because you'll be presented with opportunity to study abroad in Brazil, and it's going to be amazing!

The most important advice I would give myself is that I need to take advantage of everything that was or wasn't taught to me. Teachers are paid to teach me what is in their curriculum but, it is up to me to go pass what was taught. I would tell myself to learn things for myself and my future. Another important piece of advice I would give to myself is to remember the people that say they are there to help you. There are a lot of people out here waiting to help someone they are just waiting to be asked for help." You never know who knows who." Lastly I would tell myself to always be kind to everyone that crosses my path. My mom always said "you never know when you're entertaining an angel". With that being said that one person you might be nice to could give you the job of your dreams. So always walk around with a smile on your face and a thank-you on your lips.

Dear Derrick A. DesVignes Hi! I am Derrick A. DesVignes of the year 2012 in January; in addition, I am writing this letter to you to give advice about college life. First, the most important advice that I can give you is to not stop praising and acknowledging Jesus Christ as your lord and savor. The reason why is because he comes first in all life's struggles that you go through. Also, he well always provide a way for his christians no matter if you were a theif just like the one that was crucified next to him. Last, another advice is to not stop looking and signing up for scholarships and not college loan. The reason why for this is so you will not owe people money in the future. Sincerely, Derrick A. DesVignes

First, I would advise myself to look into financial aid and loans in order to get my tuition and books covered, along with federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans to cover the amounts that financial aid does not cover. Second, I would make sure to tell myself to get a job that works around my school schedule and not to go overboard on working, thus allowing time for studying and homework. Last, but not least I would advise myself not to procrastinate! Get my assignments done as soon as I get them so they are out of the way and I can focus on other assignments.

If I could go back in time knowing what i know now, i would prepare myself by taking college now courses. I would also have prepared myself better for the S.A.T. and the college entrance exams. Another word of advice i would give myself is to prepare myself better to write mulitple page papers and to be able to multitask being a full time student and being responsible for getting to class, do the assignments and studying for exams, because unlike high school, college professors don't give second chances, you are responsible for yourself and if you fail it's your own fault.

It is important to be aware of all deadlines for all aplications for scholarships. Always put them in early because there is a better chance of you recieving funds rather than if you were to turn them in after the deadline. Ask your college counselor or someone you know who has attended college to answer any inquires you have. The best thing to do is to ask the college itself.

It should go for all students, but especially freshman need to know 1) How to register for their classes 2) Know what their curriculum consist of and what classes they can and when they can take it. Do not get forced into classes that you don't have to take or times that won't fit with them type of student you are. If you are not a morning person, do not take classes at 8am in the morning. 3) Know how financial aid works and what aids are available at the school to help pay off school. 4) Have business professional attire. There are certain classes or events that you should attend that you need to look professional at. Along with that please have your resume ready and a great perk would be to have business cards, You can find them for cheap at vistaprint.com 5) If you need help ask you it. Please understand this may be the first time away from your home and rules. There is no one that is here to make sure that you go to class and do what you are suppose to. Do not become a statistic, especially from young African Americans. Have fun of course but please be on your stuff and do what your suppose to do. Ultimately you are here for an education, everything else is in the back burner. this is the time to meet and network with people; these people will be a great aid to get you to where you want to be. Just do right and things will be fine and fall into place.

To first time freshmen I say...Congratulations and welcome to Morgan State University. As an incoming freshman, it is mandatory that you attend the Access Orientation Program in which you will take a placement test. Your performance on the test will determine the Math and English courses you will be placed into, so it is advisable that you prepare adequately for the test. Also you should meet with your academic advisor before you register for your classes and have it in mind that honors students need to take at least 15 credits per semester. You need to take at least 12 credits to be considered as a full time student; otherwise you will have a part-time student status. It is also recommended that you have at least two mentors: a faculty member and an upperclassman in your major. Your mentor should be someone who can discuss your academic progress and other concerns with. This will really help in making your first semester a breeze through. Also join societies, clubs and organizations in and outside your major for networking purposes; they are also good on resumes! Finally, team work is a very integral part of college therefore you should get a study group or clique of friends you could study and hang out with.

I would give myself a lot of advice if i could go back to my high school days. First i would tell my self to take college seriously because it will determine where i stand in the future. I would also tell myself to study more and make sure that i give it my all. I would let myself know that times will get had but dont be discouraged. College life is very important because you have to remember it is a big reflection of your life and your child's life. But mostly I would tell myself to take time out to get help dont be afraid to ask for help. That would be the advice that i would give myself if i could go back in time.

You define your Morgan experience! Get involved, get to know people! Otherwise, you can't complain!

Knowing what I know now about college life and making the transition, I would have givin my self a lot more advice. First I would tell myself to work a lot more on time management. Time Management is a huge deal in college. However, I am working two jobs and attending school full time, and am handling it fairly well for the most part. Some days can get long. I think if I would have worked on time mangement in high school I think the transition to college may have been a little easier. Another piece of advise that I would have given myself as a high school student would be to spend more time studing and not just assume that I know things. Being a special education studnet most of my k-12 schooling, I spent more time being frustrated and not retaining information that would be needed to study. As I grow older I have learned how to work with myself and teach myself how I learn . College is a lot different becuase I am doing something I enjoy and love to do, and I think that has made a world of diference for me. Thanks you. Amy

An impressionable young woman sits among her graduating class and watches as the class valedictorian delivers her speech. Only wishing that it was her who was up their behind the podium Perfection was always something she wanted. Instead she was seated among the rest of her graduates with a 3.2 GPA. The GPA she had obtained over her for years of high school was adequate but far from perfect. This woman was also disheartened that she would not be able to attend her first choice college, Howard University. Two years later this now powerful independent woman has changed her outlook. I, Charlese Johnson, look back at that moment of my high school year and am enlightened. I now attend Morgan State University where I am extremely active in campus activities. I have achieved a 3.91 GPA very close to the perfection I once sought in high school. There is so much growth, knowledge, and experience I have already gained from college. I would tell my high school self to stay focused, stay determined, and stay motivated, and you will achieve great things. I have already achieved many objectives in my college career and will continue to do so.

WATCH MONTEBELLO LIKE A HAWK. Keep copies of all of your records, all of your transcripts, receipts, ANYTHING you send or receive in the Admissions or Financial Aid process. If you don't, you WILL (I repeat, WILL) regret it. You have been warned.

Antonio

Dear Antonio, I know you are confused and nervous about what college to attend. You should relax and just be sure to pick a school that is close to home so that you can be near your family, takes care of its students needs and interests, and has a family oriented feel to it. All of these characteristics are indentical to your high school where you have flourished. Being close to your family while transitioning through college will help you to stay grounded on your journey. Being able to see your family whenever you choose will eliminate the home sick feeling. A school that takes care of your interests and needs is essential to making you feel welcome there. If there is a staff in place that allows you to develope into a productive and succesful adult. Lastly a school with a family oriented feel to it will help to nurture you and make you feel more welcome. It also gives you a sense of belonging. In conclusion I know you will make the best decision for yourself when choosing a college. So good luck in advance.
