LGBTQ groups are small and political. The supervisors rarely return phone calls or emails. If they do call you back you have to probe them for information which can be very annoying and frustrating. That happens a lot at UT At Austin because most people are too curt and busy to help you. Updates are rare. If anything occurs it's usually at a bar or at the campus but turn out is small. This is Texas and most people are not out of the closet due to shame, fear, and ridiculous religious oppression.
If you are LGBTQ or an ethnic minority you will feel out of place. University of Texas at Austin is still highly traditional. LGBTQ is very left of center and creates noticeable tension within the diverse population. Most students come from traditional, conservative, and religious backgrounds. LGBTQ people are often times viewed as being as bad as pedophiles in Texas. Do you really want to go here if you are an out liberal? I don't think so.
There is a good amount of political and social tensions because there are democrats, republicans, and other types mixed into the student population. Administration favors and takes sides with particular students over others. In my opinion that created a hostile environment that inhibited my learning.

The student body is extremely diverse at UT. Students come here from all over the world, and while most of them are from Texas there is still an interesting mix of personality on campus. People can be themselves when they're here which is why almost nothing is surprising to see on campus anymore. From funky clothes to singing out loud while walking to class, anything goes.
Chanel
Diversity, diversity, diversity.
Emily

The people you meet at the University of Texas at Austin are extremely educated, diverse, and probably the most influencial people that you will ever meet; they will eventually become the basis of your college experience and your support through the difficulties of life.
