Throughout my application process, I felt truly supported by Whitman’s community, especially by the current students who were so helpful in guiding my decision. As an international student, I found an incredible network of resources here, and the support systems in place made my transition much smoother. The CCEC has been particularly helpful in assisting me with opportunities and growth. I’ve always felt valued and included as an individual, which has made Whitman feel like a second home to me.

My professors are super accessible, making time for me and always willing to talk after class. I often email my professors to ask questions and get great feedback. Most majors have a thesis component to graduate which is a really great way to build a grad school resume and get hands-on experience. I've found writing a thesis a fulfilling way to complete my academic journey. The distribution requirements are easy to fulfill because so many classes count toward something and it encourages me to explore new areas. For example, I'm currently taking Race & Architecture and the Politics of Indigeneity with the politics department. The discussion based style and small size means that I feel more engaged in learning. What I love most about Whitman is how genuinely happy students are. Live/work manageable and the support for mental health counseling has been very good in my experience. People here feel comfortable being themselves which I think speaks for a lot. Our campus paper, The Wire, really helped me develop my writing skills and meet interesting, creative people. The CCEC career coaching has been helpful, enabling me to practice interviewing and create a resume that's helped me get employed on campus and off. Whitman owned off-campus housing is well taken care of–I have a fabulous one-bedroom with a updated kitchen and huge windows. On campus, I lived in Stanton, Anderson, and the French House and found all of them to be clean and comfortable spaces. My room in the French House even had an outdoor balcony. Now that it's spring, campus is looking super lovely and everyone relaxes outside on Ankeny field or by Cleveland.

I can truly say that I do not believe there is a better school out there for me. Whitman encompasses everything I have wanted. It's beautiful and in a quaint, peaceful town. The community here is very tight-knit, and nearly every person I have interacted with has been kind and welcoming. The academics are fantastic; the professors are kind and make an active effort to know every single student. The classes and professors here have reawakened my love for academics. I feel like there are so many opportunities for support; there is always at least one person to reach out to.

Isabella - 08/13/2020

Whitman is extremely idealistic. Yes, the class sizes might be small, but I enjoyed every part of it. The great thing about the community - well there are so may - small class sizes, familiarity with everyone, The only downside is that there's not much to do (you're in the middle of no where). If you decide to attend, I promise you'll have memories that lat for the rest of your life.

  5. What is your overall opinion of this school?

The 10:1 student to faculty ratio is fantastic. Getting a hold of professors has never been a problem, and I know many professors outside of the classroom through class dinners at their house or babysitting their kids. The workload is large, but entirely manageable. Almost every student is overly committed to their activities here: whether they’re in Tae Kwon Do club or doing student government. Buying into campus life and getting invested in activities is key—there’s always more than enough to do on the weekends, but it’s not the nightlife of the big city. It’s more intimate and close knit.

  6. What are the academics like at your school?

My largest class this last semester had 17 students, and my smallest class had 6 (and I was a first-year, who typically are in the "largest" classes). Most professors encourage students to participate, and all of my professors knew my name. Last semester one professor invited the whole class to dinner at her house, and we had class outside several times with another. Classes are usually challenging, but don't foster competitivity within students. One disadvantage is that, because of our size, it is sometimes difficult to find classes that offer exactly what you are looking for.

  7. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Whitman students are very involved in intramurals, in theater, in the environment. I will be taking a theater class next semester, and I have never acted in my life (something about Whitman pushed me to take that chance). You will find that the library is a very popular place on campus, but that does not mean that Whitman students do not have fun. We have the usual parties that any other school has, but there are also so many other events going on all the time. Honestly, I can't remember a time when I didn't know what to do or out of options. If you're at Whitman, you are involved in one thing or another, so you will never be bored.

  9. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

If you just look at the surface you may think so, but Whitman students are very dynamic and very involved. It is incredible how involved the average Whittie is in the community and on campus. Sure, most of us are tree-huggers, but we are also much more than that. And Whitman is making a genuine effort at drawing in students with diverse backgrounds.

  10. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I had known how hard classes would be. IB prepared me for college in a really big way but writing those first few papers were very daunting. Come prepared to throw a lot of what you learned in high school away and learn new ways of thinking and writing. I also wish I hadn't brought so much random junk from home, because packing would have been much easier.

  12. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

We're a community and not an institution, we have fun while we are here to learn. For the most part we are here for the academics, but there are bands and great lecturers and movies, we know each other and get along. They are good people here, they are smart, but not smart but not pompous.

  19. What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

The stereotype is that we're all outdoorsy earthy-crunchy hippies here at Whitman. While we do have an active outdoors program and beautiful, natural l areas close by to experience, there's plenty of people who aren't into the whole camping scene. The campus is fairly environmentally conscious but I believe that we're not really to the hippy level.

  21. What's the Greek scene like?

There tends to be a function/party every weekend, as well as events and programs solely for those in the Greek system. However, about 33{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of Whitman students are part of the Greek system, and I do not feel at all as "one of the Indies" and my friends as "one of the Greeks." The campus is very inclusive in nature, and it is not divided between Greek and Indies. Moreover, the Greek system is more of just another social club and another way to get to know more people. .
