Kansas' Tuition Program
Kansas offers reduced tuition programs and state savings plans. For instance, check out the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP). It has tuition reduction for both public and private colleges in Kansas. It enrolled 735 out-of-state students in 2016-2017. In fact, the total amount of tuition saved was over $4.8 million.
As a result, private colleges offer a 10% reduction on tuition rates. Public colleges agree to charge no more than 150% of in-state school tuition. The savings fall between $500 and $5,000. Several other states such as Illinois and Indiana participate in this program.
The Kansas Learning Quest Savings Program offers education savings accounts to help students pay college expenses. Expenses include tuition, books, computer software, campus fees, room and board. The Kansas state government administers a 529 Education savings plan.
The plan has several tax advantages. The plan provides federal tax free growth and withdrawals along with full or partial state income tax deductions. The deductions could be up to $3,000 for single taxpayers or $6,000 for married/joint taxpayers.
