What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
As a high school student from New York City I thought a lot about the decision I was making to go away for college. When I made the decision of going to Buffalo State College, which is eight hours away from the City, I began to think about the different things I would have to get used to. However, I never thought about the real transition of going from a High School in New York City to a college Upstate New York. Knowing what I know now about college and the transition I went through, I would?ve advised myself to never forget that I worked very hard and alone to get to where I am now, that struggles were bound to happen. At First I was overwhelmed because of the noticeable changes I was experiencing, and never thought about the fact that I got myself into this and in the future every little struggle will pay off gratefully.

Describe the students at your school.
Most of my classmates are genuinely nice people. I don't have any issues with anyone I have come across so far. In class, most of the students that I befriend seem focused on succeeding in school and in life. My dorming expericence has been good as well. There are some people that are obviously not disciplined or responsible and I keep my distance from them.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
Buffalo has a lot of diversity, different types of people, surroundings, experiences. Buffalo is a large school, but to me it just means more opportunities and more experiences than a smaller school could offer. The only complaint I have about UB is that our sports teams are less than great, but being a Division 1 school means alot of heavy competition, so it's okay.

What are the academics like at your school?
The sizes of classes vary largely. Most of my classes are rather large, which can be intimidating. However, if you make the effort to utilize office hours and contacting your professor, most of them are willing and appreciative of the contact with students. The education at UB is geared often towards the future, the bigger picture, and a student's opportunities after college.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
Before I came to this school, I wish I had known who was the best person to go to for advisement. At the beginning of my college career here at Buffalo State College, I got advised by three different advisors and was told three different kinds of information regarding which classes I need to take, which caused me to take a couple classes I did not need to. I finally figured out that the best person to go to in order to get the most effective advisement was Mrs. Day, the assistant director to the Education Department.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
I belong to the UB swim team, and therefore I am blessed with about 50 odd people that I am with every day. We do everything together and generally stick together, my teammates are my friends. We do mix with other athletic teams and through AFA I have been able to meet other people. True Blue is starting to break down the athlete-rest-of-the school divide but it's there. The athletes do not like the Greeks point and fact.
People party at UB and it depends on who you hang out with the amount that you party. For some people the weekend starts on Thursday night, others never go out. For me if I go out in-season it's only Saturday night, but in the off season we tend to have a little more fun.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
The stereotype of the students of SUNY College at Buffalo is that they are very energetic, and outgoing. They like to challenge many goals, not only on an academic level but in social life as well such as making friends even. The school holds many events that is operated and run by, not the school, but the students themselves. It's not only SUNY Buffalo that has jocks, frat kids and stoners; every school has them. I view this not as a deterioration of the school image but builds up the diversity of the people you can meet.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?
That Buffalo is always under snow... yes we have had some crazy snow storms and ice storms, but our summers are some of the best, absolutely beautiful.
Also, we know that the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres are yet to win a championship- so stop telling us. It will happen some day!
Another- we are all drunks... well our bars close at 4:00-am! What do you expect?

What are your classes like?
I am currently taking MTH 142, MTH 309, AAS 261, and VS 150. VS 150 satisfies the art gen ed requirement and is a very easy class. My professor is fun and in the class we talk about some art, he makes jokes, and we watch films. There are 3 tests which make up your grade. Attendance is extra credit. The tests are 25 multiple choice questions. He uses a bell curve and then pushes it forward towards As. A 36/100 in that class will get you a C-. I got a 72/100 and it's a B+. I always go to class, so I'll get that extra credit. The tests are poorly worded. Some questions are obvious while others are impossible. The curve makes it all OK though. Low stress class. AAS 261 is African American Studies. It satisfies the US history requirement. I go to class, listen to the teacher, take notes, very rarely have homework. The tests are 2 essay questions and the teacher doesn't give out good grades easily. 1/3rd of my class failed the 1st test. MTH 142 is a calculus 2 class for majors and it is basically what you'd imagine it to be. It's a lot of work, but it's doable. I get homework every week and the tests are difficult, but manageable. MTH 309 is a Linear Algebra course. I go to class and learn very little. The textbook teaches me most of what I need to know. For me it is a very difficult class and I have no idea how to read the questions. Once you know what the question is asking it is easy to answer.
