What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
I would tell any parents or students looking for the "right" college to think about what is important to them. The little things really add up. I choose the University of Pittsburgh Bradford because it was the distance, class size, and price range I wanted. When you search you need to take all the small details into mind, including do you like the dorm style, meal plan, and library. As for gaining the best college experience possible my advice is simple; do everything. Try anything you can. I have attended classes I am not taking, sat in meetings for clubs I am not involved in, and I go to as many university-sponsored activities as I can fit into my schedule. This way you can truely experience the most of what your college has to offer, you make great connections, and have a wonderful time making the most of the semesters. The best advice I can give is to get involved, take risks, and dig for the best of what your university can offer you. That is how you make your college the right college for you.

What are the academics like at your school?
The classes here are relatively small, I personally have never heard of a class of more than 30 students and even those are the more general classes such as Fundamentals of Mathematics or English Composition, which everyone must take. However, the classes here are smaller in size and most of them are unique in some aspect. My most unique class would have to have been Death and Dying with Professor Stephanie Eckstrom. I remember coming across it in the course catalog and thinking that it had to have been a Life Science course but as I read on, I saw that it was a Sociology course. At the time, I was taking The Family with Professor Eckstrom, so I knew how hilariously satirical she was, so I just had to take a course about death with her. I thought it would be similar to going to a comedy club every week, and I was right. However, I must tell you that every class I ever took with Dr. Helene Lawson was very unique, because that it is simply the best way to describe her. She, to me, exemplifies the student-professor relationship here at UPB. She will go out of her way to help her students with anything and is genuinely concerned with their improvement in the classroom as well as their interests/priorities outside of the class. You will find that you can say this about many of the professors here at Pitt-Bradford.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
Being a Nursing Major, the worst thing about this school is the inability to transfer to Main Campus without having to start over from scratch. There have been many people who have tried to transfer to main campus with a Nursing Major and once they get there they have to take all the classes they took here at Bradford all over again which is 2 years of school and 60+ credits. This is the worst thing for me because I want to go to Main Campus after my 2nd year without starting over to expose myself to more nursing branches.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
Personal place that does not make you feel like a statistic. The professors are personable and there to help rather than there just to teach you and get it over with. The campus is relaxing and nature is all around. Still able to get all shopping done, but not like a big city. The people on campus have fun in ways that other schools do not. Foremost this campus allows you to get involved in activities and make a difference to the campus in leadership positions that are not possible in highly populated campuses.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
People always ask, “What is there to do here?” In town we have a bowling alley, movie theatre, mini-golf, Wal-Mart (smile) and a few restaurants, however we try to provide the student body with on campus options as well. We have annual event such as Airband, our lip-synching contest; Sibs and Kids Weekend, siblings and other young family members of the students are invited to participate in a day of fun and are welcome to stay in the dorms with their Pitt-family member; Winter Formal, students dress up in their best and dance the night away; Cultural Festival, a variety of cultures are showcased through song, dance, food and dress; and so much more. We also have at least 1 comedian come to campus every month, as well as a host of other events organized by the Student Activities Council (SAC) and Student Government Association (SGA). If SAC and SGA don’t have it, then another club here probably does, such as the Literary Club, Anime Club, Education Club, African American Student Union, Art Club, etc.
Sports are offered here as well, we have: Men’s Basketball
Women’s Basketball
Baseball
Softball
Men’s Soccer
Women’s Soccer
Swimming
Men’s Golf
Women’s Golf
Tennis
Women’s Volleyball
During basketball games, the biggest being March Madness which starts the season, we have the Dance Team, the Diamond Steppers and the cheerleaders all perform. Bus trips are also offered for some of the Pitt home football games.
Of course we have Greek life as well. We have six local organizations; no recognized national organizations as of yet. We have three sororities; Zeta Alpha Chi (I love my sister organization!!), Theta Sigma Delta, and Lambda Xi and three fraternities; Delta Omega Phi, Phi Kappa Epsilon and of course my favorite (smile), Sigma Lambda Chi. For the most part, everyone can find something to do here at Pitt-Bradford, you just have to look!!

What is your overall opinion of this school?
First and foremost, if you are coming to Pitt-Bradford with a closed mind, you will not enjoy yourself. However, if you are open to new ideas and new possibilities, then you will find yourself amongst like-minded people. The campus, as well as the town, may be small but the hearts here are ever growing. The faculty and staff here will go out of their way to help you and make sure you are staying on track. They take pride in their students, and it makes it much easier and rewarding learning from a professor that takes pride in their craft. For the most part, everyone here takes pride in what they do, from the grounds keepers that keep our campus immaculate to the police officers that keep us safe to the students who show their Panther Pride at sporting events.
