As a student at Essex County College, I find the institution to be a fantastic place for academic growth and development. The faculty here are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive, always willing to go the extra mile to ensure students grasp the material and succeed in their studies. The range of programs offered is diverse, catering to various interests and career aspirations, which makes it an excellent choice for students seeking both traditional and non-traditional academic paths.
The resources available to students are impressive. The library is well-stocked and provides a quiet place for studying, and the tutoring centers are a great help for those who need extra assistance. Additionally, the college's commitment to affordability and accessibility is commendable, making higher education attainable for a broad spectrum of students.
However, I must admit that the social life at Essex County College is not as vibrant as one might find at a four-year university. This is to be expected at a community college, where many students commute and have outside commitments such as work and family. While there are clubs and organizations to join, the overall campus life can sometimes feel a bit subdued.
Despite this, I appreciate the practicality and focus that comes with attending a community college. The environment is conducive to learning and personal growth without the distractions that often accompany a more traditional college experience. For those who are serious about their education and are looking for a supportive and resource-rich environment, Essex County College is an excellent choice.

I am happy to be here, it's an awesome experience, I've learned here how to keep going, don't mind how big is the storm around. This school encourage and support everyone to never give up, as part of the college I feel running a marathon not a short race, the life, the career, the knowledge, the teaching and apprentice are always the way to go.

Essex County College is a place like home. It has a tight-knit community that makes it feel safe and secure. The Professors are always available and ready to push you towards your goals. They constantly inform us of other opportunities we can partake in to become better individuals. From Essex County College, I enjoyed my most first's. I had my first job through the Work-Study Program. I made a new set of friends, I partake in my first Volunteer experience, and soon I will be partaking in my first Research Program. Essex County College is home!

I believe Essex County College is a good way to start, specially for those students who are not sure what path to follow for their careers, and for those like me who have decided to return to school and must work at the same time. I like it, because they have a diveristy of academics, and the class schedules are flexible, therefore students can attend classes and work as well. Faculty are very helpful in every department. They are polite and respectful, of course. Acces to the library and computer laboratories are good.

My overall experience at Essex County College is positive. I think it's worth it and very affordable. I have already registered for my second semester and I'm glad I did. In the last semester, I had one great Professor and another one was just ok. Professors get back to you as soon as they can.

About my experience:
-Ain't bad, ain't too great either
-Good introduction to college education and financial stress
-Good 'chaser' towards applying a four-year university
-Left this college because the college itself was dipping financially; got saved by gov't funds after afterwards, better take that with a grain of salt
-Security is ok, they give good directions
-Amount of 'Give a care' teachers cancel themselves out with the amount of 'give me a paycheck' teachers
---There are a few 'menace to finances & records' up in there too
-Cafeteria is good, and there are a couple food trucks around campus (didn't try their food, tho)
---Who's bright idea was it for making people pay $4.99 for ONE pizza slice?
---Luncheon is decent, gets kinda loud in one corner of it, tho (but I didn't see anybody escorted)
-WebAssign is a borderline scam; just let us pay the books instead of paying for a bootleg Khan Academy
---Some classes require you to buy BOTH the WebAssign AND the book
-Computer labs are decent, printing can be kinda confusing, tho
Some advise (based off what I done/my regrets):
--Every college--nah, ALL colleges are gonna give you the filler (gen. ed.) classes that you MUST take for your degree that have nothing to do with your major (do you really need to write like a pro author for a computer science degree?), so you're gonna have to just deal with it and take them anyway if you're striving for a degree
----Find the easiest professor if you feel your gen. ed. class has almost no relation to your major
--------Best to take one of these classes alongside one of your major-requirements, they're good 'calmers' if your major classes are getting overwhelming
--DON'T take a semester full of difficult classes unless you wanna be in a straitjacket
--Remember, taking FOUR classes is full-time
--Get an ID card ASAP, because you gonna need for the:
----Welcome/Welcome Back feast happens early Fall semester; free popcorn, sno-cones and bbq
--COMPLETE your FAFSA asap, then COMPLETE your NJ HESAA, and then hunt down those scholarships and grants
--Apply to a work study, they can give you extra pay on the side; working at the Computer Lab is easy money
--I think the vending machines nearby the side entrance/English area by the bottom of the staircases are the cheapest ones if you wanna buy a quick snack
--Even out your schoolwork; EXAMPLE: If you are already acing a class but don't have time to finish an assignment for it ALL THE WHILE you got another class you're having trouble with and have to finish an assignment for it around the same time, I'd best say to have that straight-A class take the hit and build your grades back up for the one you're not so hot on
--Wayback machine has some free literature to find if you need a legit source for a research paper
--Keep studying whatever chance you get
----Study center is good to keep a mental note on doing this
--------Better make some study groups, and if you can't, get help from a tutor instead
--------The library is your best bet for the quietest study area
--This school ain't really gonna reach out to you, so you better have a voice and hunt down assistance
--Always read the syllabus to know what's coming up (and to make sure if the teacher is legit)
--If Adobe ain't the way to go, you better get down to that bookstore and pay for the books ASAP
--If y'all are doing a group project, just use Google Drive/Docs, otherwise y'all are making it harder for yourselves
----If y'all wanna communicate with each other, just use your phone (Skype eats up your computer memory/makes the computer hot)
--If you got people who you feel will be your future homies, get their phone number or their Facebook or something, and if you do, you better keep in touch
----And if you did all the above, don't leave them hanging after y'all are done taking the same class
----Same goes for certain professors via email, some can give you really good advise (trust!) in education and life in general
--GOTO your or any advisor ASAP
----They help you out by recommending certain classes/giving you a template of what you should take over your two-year course
--If you don't know what to do, reach out to the administration ASAP
----Administration got a few fools in there who think helping a helpless student out with bad attitude is key, so you better hold your tongue if you need some help in the future
--If you're confused with the subject, reach out to the teacher ASAP
----If your teacher ain't good at their job, reach out to the tutor ASAP
--------If your tutor ain't good at their job, then reach out to classmates ASAP
------------If y'all study group ain't understanding either, then the Internet will
--Check ratings for teachers first before applying to their classes (saves you a lotta anger, stress, money and time)
--Be prepared for a cramped/filled parking lot (might be better off just taking the bus)
--This college is in the ghetto, so there's plenty of hoodrats here--steer clear of them
--Rutgers University and NJIT are relatively close if you ever wanna get education/books/notes/etc. from them
--Knew a guy that looked just like Rakim

Essex County does it's job and nothing more, though I will say most of the teachers I have had actually do care about their students and will try and help them figure out what to do once their two years are up. I will say that is where Essex shines the most, it's teachers. Every teacher I've had at this school has made due with what they had to teach to their fullest potential, I never felt like just a paycheck to them. The campus also has loads of opportunities for scholarships and other grants, though the college is given a bad reputation and sometimes deserves it, Essex will do everything in it's power to help you graduate and that really is the first thing you should want from your college.

Overall, Essex County College is great. My experience thus far has been a good one. The staff is courteous and helpful, and my professors have been wonderful.
I am looking forward to starting the summer session in May.
There are a variety of workshops and entertainment offered by Essex County College, all designed to give students well-rounded educational, cultural, and social experiences.

It is an okay school. Not my cup of tea. Some professors are great while others are total jerks. The administration is terrible, rude and not helpful. The school itself is outdated and run down. Don't expect to find somewhere quiet on campus to get homework done. Would give it zero stars if i could

This college is looked down upon mainly because its a community college but from my experience its as good as other colleges. The professors here take pride in what they do and teach with passion helping students engage in the classroom and understand the topic at hand. I am delighted that I am a student attending Essex, everyone treats each other with respect and kindly.

Essex county college needs many improvements. First of all they need to improve their staff. Whenever you reach somebody on the phone line they do not have patience for any extraordinary questions. Improving their staff ans instructors will efficiently change the whole atmosphere of the College.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
i wiould tell my high school self to listen, and to think before i act.
My classmates are very diverse in culture, age, and socioeconomic background, therefore offering a variety of viewpoints on all topics in all subject areas.
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
i wished i know before i came to the school was how helpful some of the proffesors are and that they are to are humans and understand when you are going through something. also i wished i would have known about all the programs there are out there to help us get the education we desire. thats only if you wanted and go looking for it you will find it.
There are too many professor that I like. Honestly being a Gen. Sci major I have taken quite a few classes. More Science classes, but I must say that I enjoyed Survey of African History, Art, and Medical Terminology, maybe because I really got to speak my mind and did not get a no no for giving my own opinions about something. Students are competitive when it comes to taking a certain class, a lot of us are all worry about the infamous GPA, we tell each other from time to time, don't take this professor. But sometimes each experience is different, my Academic advisor is cool, he is also a professor and a Dr in the Education, he teach Biology so he understand my struggles. Some of the classes aren't geared towards jobs, it makes you wonder why do I need Calculus if I want to become a doctor. Again it depends on who you hang with, each conversation will be intellectually different.
ECC is a very good school with good professors, excellent professors, bad professors, and the professors who need to retire. My overall opinion about the school is that it has treated me fairly well, because I have come across some difficult professor but I always study hard and not quit. People will disagree with me, but each individual has there own experiences. The best thing is there welcome back feast, that are held outside, you get to meet new people and learn about different clubs at that. Another good thing is the tools that are at your fingertips, because you either use them or not.. The school is located in the heart of a major city, You can not only study in that library, but NJIT, Rutgers, and even Seton Hall. This is a good school who cares for the students, The most frequent complaints are Financial Aid and the overpriced food that isn't much of a selectivity. They are always having educational forums, concerts, fashion shows. A cool new thing is that we now have Greek life on campus as well.
What kind of person should not attend this school?
Honestly I can't really think of the kind of student that wouldn't strive at Essex County College, un less you are a student who aren't going to apply yourself to your studies. If your recieving financial aid or is paying for school out-of pocket and you're not applying yourself, that just shows that you are a student who is undeserving of going anywhere for that matter because you're not taking your education seriously. And is depriving yourself of who you can become to the upmost.
What are the most popular student activities/groups?
Our school has a population equivalent to a 4 year school, No one knows everybody in that school. Because there maybe people who have been there for the whole 2 or 3 years, and your just now meeting them for the first time.
What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
I like to share with others the many opportunities that the school provides. Especially one that is very personal to me. Essex County College has an amazing Nursing program. There is an LPN and an RN program and after graduating you can work in your field of choice. I'm also proud of the extracurricular activities such as clubs. Once you join one club it's as if you are a member of all the clubs because of the support that they show to each other.
Are very hard? Pharmacology is a lot of reading and takes time from what you want to do. I recommend that class for future Doctors, Nurses, PA, Pharmacist, so that when you do go to that next level it won't be all that overwhelming. My other class are hard to but I have found ways to spread out the craziness and achieve what needs to be achieved, Everything takes work, and nothing comes easy, its just how you make it for yourself,. Chemistry need constant understanding. Also my CIS class is awesome and is really easy, especially if you pay attention and is always at a computer.
What I consider the best thing about my school I considered is the diversity of the college. I was raised in Newark all my life which is diverse in its own and I am comfortable around different ethnicities. This is pivotal because I yearn to have an enticing career in America as a business man and will be working with people of many backgrounds. Diversity range from the students to the professors and the lunch workers in the cafeteria.
What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
I personally haven't come across any students who posses that attribute, I think it comes from the students who truly do not want to do the work. I also believe is its who you associate yourself with, because the people that hang around me vice versa are very intelligent and are serious about there studies. So that stereotype is false.

Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
79% of students attending Essex County College receive some sort of financial aid.
76% were awarded federal grants.N/Areceived federal loans. Many students do also need to apply for additional private student loans.
