College life was a complete turn around from life at home. I had anticipated the cool parties, no parents, activities, and sporting events but I had no idea the reality of what I was getting myself into. I didn’t have my mom there to wake me up in the mornings, I didn’t have a home cooked meal every night, I stayed up all hours of the night not partying but actually studying for challenging exams, and money was no longer right at my fingertips. Although my first year of college was a huge shock I don’t regret it one bit. I loved every minute of learning how to become a young adult. In college I learned how to manage my time, make new friends, learn new things, and I even got my first job. I moved away from my home in Miami, Fl in order to attend Florida State University in Tallahassee. Being eight hours away from home not only distanced me from my friends and family but it also forced me to adapt to a new environment. Living in a college town I was surrounded by many people just like myself, which was great.

In high school I was never very motivated. Going to college I met a number of wonderful teachers who helped me to realize just how much I love to learn and inspired me to pursue the path of a teacher myself. Being in college has helped me realize my leadership potential with the clubs offered , has given me oppurtunities to express my passion through the honors program and scholar's day event, and has really given me a feeling of self worth and a place to belong.

When asked what I have gotten out of my college experience I must say opportunity. I have been given the opportunity to experience many things that I wouldn’t have ever had the chance to experience without Florida State. I have learned what tradition truly is and I have made friends that will last a lifetime. I know that I will always have a school that I can call mine. Florida State will always be the first place I could walk into a library and know there is someone there to help me. It is a place I can go sit outside and study and enjoy my surrounding without being questioned. It is a place that I will have called my home for four years. Florida State is my school and a tradition that I will pass along to my children and grandchildren for the remainder of my life. It is Wescot fountain, long strolls through campus on weekends, and the campus that has made me into the woman I am today.

Fall 2009, I suppose to start school at El Camino College in Torrance, California. I cancel my classes to take care my nephew. He has a medical condition. He stop breathing when he was 7 weeks old. Right now he's 1 years old. I suppose to attend to American Career College in Los Angeles, California but I cancel it because something came up with my nephew. He had to get a shunt in his head because he had fluid on the brain. June 2010, I enrolled in Everest College in Gardena, California. My major is Medical Assisting. I want to be a nurse because I take care my nephew, and my nephew takes a lot of medications. I want to help out other people who need help with their health. When I enrolled in Everest College, I was scared because I couldn't affored college. When I seen the amount I have to pay back when i finish school , I was shock and nerves. I need help and all I have is myself to get through this. I attend Everest College June 29,2010. I'm still going to take care my nephew wow i'm attending school.

Since I've attended Florida State University, I've grasped a greater understanding of who I am and what I want in my life both professionally and personal. This school has taught me that in order to reach your goals, proactivity is a necessity. One must reach out and run hard after their dreams because if not, someone else may take your place. This university offers so much in the aspects of meeting a diverse group of people, networking, and introduction of new ideas and activities not formally presented in my life. In the months that I've been here, I have attended art galleries and cultural events within Tallahassee, runned by students; worked with humanitarian student organizations planning to travel to Rwanda, and networked with my workstudy department to find internships and gain advice for my career path. The endless possiblities at Florida State University can be overwhelming but I welcome them because this is what life is offering me and I can not turn down the chance of reaching my goals in life.

Most people believe the most important thing you can get out of college is the education, but I disagree. While the education is important, I believe that the self discovery and exposition to many different types of people are the real treasures to be found. College exposes you to so many new things you never would have dreamed of that after going through all those new experiences, you really find yourself. And while your degree will be of value to you, do not overestimate it. Many people come out of college doing something that has zero to do with anything they studied. Sometimes you just have to prove that you can stick it out for four years, and show people what you're made of. That is what is really valuable in this world: the ability to over come the hardships and triumph over adversity for the improvement of yoruself.

So far, I have gotten the education I have been looking for. Not only have I been introduced to my major in Business, I have learned the importance of time management and organization. I have also been lucky enough to have the resources to decide whether I want to pursue the opportunity of studying abroad. College has taught me the value of independence, both social and financial.

The most important thing that I have gotten out of my college experience so far is a better understanding of life. The first thing I realized when I started college was that the next few years of my life would be the ones that would matter. I would look back on the days when I was 18 and over ambitious; I thought I could take on the world, and tried my hardest to do so. The days when I would work eight hours, go to school ten hours, and sleep for four hours and do it again the next day. The main thing that I understand about life now that I didn?t before college is that anything worth having you have to work for, and that work is what gives that ?thing? worth. I feel that this definitely applies to the degree that I will hopefully obtain soon and almost everything else. This acquired knowledge has made me more motivated and determined to reach my goals and to not give up when things get tough, but rather keep trying because in the end the reward will be that much better if I know that I worked hard for it.

Like a butterfly I had been released from my cocoon once I went to college. It was time for me to spread my wings. College enabled me to find a sense of self. I never knew what I believed in or really cared about. Being around other students with strong believes and passions helped me to find my own. I also gained understanding and respect for other cultures and nationalities. I took a Race and Ethnicity course which made me a more sensitive to those who are unlike me. Going into college I was ignorant to events outside of my little world. College took my ignorance and turned it into curiosity. I became more aware of events in the United States and other countries. I also gained a sense of freedom and independence. Being away from my parents gave me the chance to see that I was capable of making good decisions by myself. After completing freshmen year with a 4.0 GPA I have a new sense of believe in myself. Attending Florida State University opened my eyes. It helped me to notice worldly affairs, different cultures, and gave me new found insight into myself.

I have met the most incredible people at FSU and have learned so much about myself and grown an unbelieveable amount since I began college. I immediately got involved with groups that advocated social justice: something that I was never around growing up, and it opened my eyes to my future. I am so passionate about advocating issues surrounding women, sexuality, race, class, etc. and helping to better the world little by little. It would be a dream of mine to do my part to end racism, homophobia, and sexism in our society, if not all over the world. If I had not attended FSU, a school that was once known as "the Berkeley of the South," but has since turned very conservative in Florida's capital I may never have learned the value of protesting to protect our human rights, and fighting for what is right. I have been so inspired and motivated by attending FSU, and I absolutely plan on using what I have learned and experienced to better society and inform those who have not had the fortune to understand social justice and equality. I am so excited about the future to apply what I now know.
