What should every freshman at University of Central Florida know before they start?

Kayla

While attending UCF I have learned about myself and how I can grow as a person. How I can be a helpful member of my community and what I want to do with my life. I have also gain experiences that I will carry with me my entire life, and plan on making more for the next few years I attend UCF and beyond. Not only that I have gained inspiration to follow my dreams and make them a reality. That is why attending UCF has been, and is, important to me.

I began college as a bewildered teenager, at 17. Though not even legally considered an adult, I took my plunge into the process that would drive me into the real world just a few years later. I entered the college world confused, intimidated, and unprepared. Now, at barely 21 years old, I am confident and committed to my future in the humanities. I have grown from a child to a self-proclaimed global citizen and free spirit, and I have the University of Central Florida to thank. The professors in my department, the classmates that have conquered courses with me, and the hundreds of people and speakers on campus that have nothing but amazing things to say about their own experience as well. In a time when “keeping your head up” is a more difficult task, UCF has eased me through just that with power.

I am the first person in my family to attend a four-year university. I have become a role model for my younger siblings as well as my cousins. My college experience expands beyond myself. My experience has allowed my family to chase their dreams as well. Because of my passion to attend college, my mother decided to take courses online. My father is even contemplating going back to school as well. I realized that you don't have to be famous to inspire anyone, charity begins at home. So far, college has given me the opportunity to find myself. Going away has taught me to be responsible and make good decisions. I even learned a few things about myself that I was unaware of until I went to college. I really enjoy cooking, baking and I have a slight case of Obessive Compulsive Disorder: I just love to clean. College is about gaining knowledge in the classroom but you also gain knowledge about yourself and other individuals. My college experience has prepared me to live on my own and think on my own. Those are valuable tools needed to succeed in life.

I started attending college at the very dark period of my life after I injured my hand. I was not able to take care of my daughter, hardly took care of myself: I could not work, was driving a car only with one hand, even brushing hair was a difficult task for me. Despite of my injury, financial difficulties and divorce that I was going through, I never stopped attending college. It was my only goal throughout that period. I made some good friends while attending, not only students but instructors too. College was my guiding light, my lighthouse, my future; it taught me never to give up, and keep on keeping on. I cannot imagine where I could have been if I did not go to college. Now I earned my Associate in Arts, and transferred to the University of Central Florida majoring in Business Administration. I liked being a college student, and now my goal is to get Master's Degree and teach at that college. For me college is my life: past, present and future, and I love every aspect of it.

Attending the University of Central Florida is a valuable experience for me because being here has given me the sense of independence and responsibilities that i never imagine ever having while staying with my parents. I have met so many different people, executives, and organizations through the Multicultural Academic and Support Services which is one of the resources UCF offers students. This college experience is basically the begining in my adult life. Staying on my own and not depending on anyone to tell me to wake up for class or to do my homework has been really different from what i am use to, however it is preparing for the "Real World". Since I am the first to attend college in my family, being here has given me a sense of Pride and when i say "pride" i do not mean it in a bad way, i mean it in a sense that I am proud that I am doing something to put a smile on my parents face.

From starting the University of Central Florida till now, I have learned many things. To begin, coming to such a large campus teaches you to become very independent and learn to depend on yourself. Also, since this is the first time livingon my own, I have been forced to learn how to manage my time efficiently so that I can do a little bit of everything that the school offers. In fact, my first semester here I was placed in a class called Cornerstone which not only taught me time management but how to work with others to get a task done in the work field. UCF has been a great learning experience even though I would choose to go to a smaller campus if I had the chance to do it all over again.

I have received a wonderful experience while attending college. I have met wonderful people that have improved my outlook on life. I have also learned many valuable experiences such as organization, an appreciation for time, and better study habits. Were it not for College, I would not have learned all of these things. I appreciate my school and enjoy every moment in their halls! I look forward to receiving my degree in Biology and taking that next step to why it has been valuable to attend: a degree and a career that I want and love!

I am geting ready to start school in the fall and this money would help me out so much, I am a single mother just wanting to go to school to get a better education for me and my son so I can raise him right .

My college experience has been great so far. i have gained some really awesome friends that i can see as my life long friends. I have also found excellent ways to study and take notes thanks to the many transition workshops they offer throughout the school year. My college experience has also taught be ways to network. many of my advisors emphasize that in an economy such as this, its not what you know, its who you know and who know you. It has been valuable for me to attend such a school like University of Central Florida because it has opened my eyes to such a diverse population which I'm sure will be the case when i get in the real world of responsibility. I also feel like my experience has been valuable because i have the ability to connect myself to some very important people that can possibly make a difference in my life for future job opportunity. Finally and most importantly, I have been learing new things everyday since i been at this school and thats really why I'm here, to learn, so I think the staff is doing a great job.

Out of my one and a half years of attendance at UCF I feel that I have received a plethora of valuable educational information, among other things. But I feel that the most valuable thing that I earned from this college is a certain maturaty that I never had before. I came here from a home where my parents always had food in the fridge, and clothes for me to wear, and a car for me to drive, and everything else. But the second I came to college I had to realize that I couldn't be the moocher that I was in high school, that I had to run my own life, and run it successfully. I have to admit that the thought of doing everything on my own and counting on myself at all times, rather than my parents, kind of scared me but now I'm so thankful for the oppurtunity to further myself as an individual. I now have a great student assistant job in the college of sciences at UCF, which I worked hard to earn, and I have grades that are getting better and better as I continue my college career. Thank you UCF.

I came into college not exactly sure what to expect. Was it going to be a party 24/7, was i going to like my roommate, or was i even going to make any friends? Being at the University of Central Florida has taught me so much. I've learned that not only does school educate you for your future, but it prepairs you for life. You meet so many different people which teachs you social skills that you will never lose. You learn to adapt to a strange environment and live with people you've never known before. I've learned to prioritize my life and put things that are important, like school, before things that are recreational, like clubbing. College has helped me find myself and find a healthy balence in my life. It is one experiance that i will never forget. College isn;t for everyone but in my opinion all the work and effort only helps you in the long run.

The college experience is something to be revered, for the most part. It enables a sense of responsibilitiy to truly grow, along with a sense of self. In no other place will a student be able to discover who they are and what they want in life, with the fervor that a college campus provides. Yes, there are parties, irresponsible living, and financial stuggles, but that is all undeniably small in comparison to the benefit of being in this environment. For me, the most important aspect of my college experience is my academic growth. I've always been what is colloquially known as a "nerd" or "geek," and that very fact has shaped who I am as a thinker. Mind you, I could not be happier with that title, and quite often revel in its merits. School is a part of who I am entirely, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Having attended a private college for a semester and dropping out, I was at a high disadvantage in the career field. After having my son and bouncing from job to job on barely any income, I knew something had to change. When visiting Ata they were warm and welcoming. I knew after talking to the finacial aid administrators that I could'nt let money be my crutch or excuse anymore. The ability to come to class only three days a week allows me time to be home with my family, time to work and still see my friends. Ata makes it easy for me. The professors are helpful and understanding, I enjoy coming to class to see them. The short ten month program gives me the push to keep going. I know soon I will have my diploma and can begin a career in the medical field, where I know I will have job stability. Its all thanks to Ata.

I have learned perseverance from my college experience. Right after high school I began to attend Pepperdine. However I dropped out before the semester was over because my financial aid fell through and my parents could not afford the expensive tuition. After that I attended El Camino College. When I got started attending this college I had my own car which my mother was paying for. However she was not one to depend on because whenever she feels like she can’t control a situation anymore she will abandons it. And she was trying to control me with the car. So when I decided to take control of my life she took the car and I could not get to school and work in time from the bus so I had to drop out for that semester and try again. But I knew I owed it to myself to get a degree. So I tried Long Beach State. But that didn’t work because I couldn’t work full time overnight and go to school full time. My grades suffered. Now I am starting over at Fullerton College where I finally found balance and have achieved a 4.0 GPA.

My college experience has been great. I have learned that there are so many opportunities in the world just waiting for me, I just have to do my part and finish my education. Finishing my education is really important to me because my biggest supporter has always been my mother and she recently went through a very rough experience. She was diagnosed with Stage 3C breast cancer my senior year in high school. Even though she was very sick she never missed any of my senior activities and she kept encouraging me to pursue my education. It would have been very easy for me to stop and just stay by her side but she kept me going. The lord has blessed us and she is doing great right now. Her doctor tells us that he never thought she would make it and she tells them she had to becuase her children need her. Not only am I continuing on with my education she also started back to college and just recieved her A.A. Degree. We are both on a track to a better future. Recieving the scholarship would help full my dream.

Out of my college experience here at the University of Central Florida, I have learned to manage time by myself and to be responsible. In the beginning of my college experience I didn’t realize that things get harder if I don’t work hard. After cramming through test and receiving average test scores I have learned to not procrastinate. I learned if you start strong and be consistent then finishing the semester won’t be as hard. I have also learned to choose my friends correctly and to not get influenced by fun activities around campus. Attending this university has been valuable to me because I have learned so much material I can apply towards my career and my personal life. This university can shape students with workshops for first generations and students in need. I have learned to network around my university and I have realized if I don’t work hard then my dreams won’t come true.

My college experience so far has been one filled with a vast array of valuable information. I have gained so much more out of this experience than I could have ever imagined. Not only have I been exposed to a phenomenal education but I have also surpassed some of life’s many tests which have taught some lifelong lessons. Being the first in my family to attend college I entered this experience not knowing what to expect or how to adjust. In the three years that I have been at The University of Central Florida I have learned how to take care of myself which has contributed in a major way to my newly found independence. I have also improved on my time management skills as well as prioritizing and I have learned that I have to take initiative and responsibility for brightening my future. It is valuable to attend college because without this experience I would not have learned how strong and truly motivated I am and I would not have been molded into the great, self sufficient woman that I am becoming. Furthermore, I would not have been exposed to such great opportunities anywhere else.

Overall and up to this point, my college experience has been very positive and eye opening. I've had to participate in community outreach already and I've only just begun my 2nd semster. There are a lot of resources that could help me develop my future career whichever it turns out to be and there is a lot to be offered to anyone as a student through clubs and other opportunities.

I personally went through a lot to get into a college in the United States being from Mexico, my dream was always attend to a college in the US. and be a part of the swim team as well. After a lot of effort and dedication I finially got enrolled into College and swim for it in 2010. This experience has made me think that anybody who really desires something and puts his mind into it and tries to achieve it to the best of their ability can make it. Although I've only been in college for a semester it has taught me a lot about how different people is, and how everyone has their own goals, unfortunatelly not everybody tries hard enough to achieve them and just conform with something that is 'good enough'. But, still I've found out that there is also a lot of people who really puts passion into what they want to do and achieve and actually get there.

Attending the University of Central Florida, I feel that I am getting an opportunity to enhance my future to become a well-rounded individual. UCF has given me a chance to learn and adopt new ways to better my educational foundation. It has made me a stronger, goal-oriented person that wants to further my career to maximize my life. It was valuable to attend such a prosperous college because it gave me a possibility to exercise responsibility to the fullest. It has also made education a top priority as a student. Not only has it enriched my education to the next level but it has also opened my eyes to prepare me to new and greater exhibitions.
