What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Chris

the most popular team on campus is obviously football! I unfortunately got placed in an upperclassmen dorm so most students keep their doors closed but in all the freshmen dorms most keep their doors open. Athletic events are definitely popular, especially football and basketball. I met my closest friends through Campus Crusade for Christ. I am doing homework at 2 am on a Tuesday. People party a lot. Last weekend I went to the baseball game, worked, etc. there are so many things you can do on a saturday night: bonfires, watch a movie,...just hanging out with your friends should be fun enough if you have good chemistry. Off campus I watch movies, go shopping, bonfires, hiking, caving, etc.

If you do it, used to do it, have thought about trying it, or scared shitless by it, chances are there is a group on campus completely devoted to it. There's spalunking (very fun I might say--but please wear a helmet. I learned that the hard way), religious groups, biking clubs, innertube water polo, hiking club, business organizations, alcohol awareness groups, future medical students groups, and anything else you can imagine. There is a greatly popular Christian group on campus that I've been a part of since I came to Tech. Campus Crusade for Christ, more commonly known as Cru, has about 600 members of the student body that meet once a week for worship and just to have a good time. (It's on Thursdays at 8:30 in squires if you're interested.) Athletic events are huge here--football being the biggest of course. On Saturdays you might as well forget your plans because the whole town is at the game. Basketball is another big sport but there are also a TON of intermurals and club sports here. The theatres on campus are great--I've seen a lot of plays and they are all done so well by our fellow students. I met my closest friends in Lee Hall last year when I lived on campus--everyone always had their doors open and we sat in the hallway at night talking or doing homework together. I also met good friends at Cru during weekly meetings, game nights, bible studies, and weekend retreats. If I'm awake on a Tuesday at 2am I'm either putting the finishing touches on a paper, coming back from a late night trip to Wal-Mart, or watching the third season of sex and the city with my roommates. People party as often here as they do anywhere else. I think it's just typical of college, but not all college students party. Fraternities and sororities are a big part of campus here. I have no desire to ever be part of one but their presence on campus is huge. Last weekend was St. Patrick's Day weekend---so I went to a party some of my friends were having in honor of the day. (Why do we celebrate that day again?) I also went hiking since it was warm, went for a late night drive through town with a friend, and saw a movie another night. There's always something to do. ALWAYS! What do you do on a Saturday night that doesn't involve drinking? This one's easy--I do this all the time! Sometimes there are movies playing on campus for $2, you can go for coffee or ice create at Deets, take a walk around campus (because it is very well lit and safe), play pool or bowl in Squires, just hang out with friends and watch movies, or have a bonfire down by the river in McCoy. And believe it or not--college isn't like the movies where everyone is trying to get you to drink all the time. They don't really care--if you aren't drinking that means more for them and believe it or not--people do have alcohol free parties and you can go to a party to dance and have a good time watching people stumble.

Different ethnicity organizations. Last weekend I went fishing and went to easter service. Off campus I hang out with friends. Go to the movies around town if there is no drinking involved. Dating scene is ok, movies, parties, people liek to date others here.

I'd say greek life and intramural sports are very popular at VT. I played intramural co-ed soccer for a few years, and it was awesome! In most dorm halls, the doors are left open. People are very friendly and sociable here.

If you're a guy and want to meet girls, look elsewhere, theres a bad ratio. Athletics dominate. Alcohol is around, but it is relatively tame. Lots of outdoor activities off campus, some nightlife in town.

In some hallways doors are always open when of course there are some people that do seclude themselves to their own room. Of course when you're a freshman on campus, having the doors left open is a great way to meet people especially if you don't have that many friends coming from high school. Either way you need to branch out. At 2 AM on Tuesday morning a lot of kids are either studying, lounging around in the hall, or watching TV. Its not uncommon for students to be up that late - I know I did it in high school and with some classes not starting till 10-11 AM there really isn't a need to be heading off to bed at 10-11 at night. People tend to party a lot at points at Tech. There is never a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night that you can't find something going on. And of course there are still people who will party Sunday-Wednesday night as well.

If you're into marching band, you must try out for the Marching Virginians; this may be the only time you will ever have a director who has his own bobble-head doll.

-Football and Basketball, the German Club -I am involved with soccer and various media organizations -Yes -Very popular -I guess it's good... -Through my soccer team and my dorm -I'm not awake -The football games, the snowball fight -Every night of the week, you can find a party -Not that prevalent -I went out Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, so yeah. -There's always something going on around campus. You can hang out with friends at home, go downtown to eat, see a movie at the Lyric, hang out in Christiansburg. -Go downtown, go to C-burg, go to the parks, visit the Cascades, have barbecues in our apartment complex, hang out with friends

There are so many groups, no one would be able to find "the most popular". Personally, I've been a member of Hokie Ambassadors (awesome Admissions tour guides!), Student Alumni Associates, and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. They all offer wonderful opportunities to serve the school and community, while making the large campus seem much smaller! If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, it's either because I'm watching a movie with my sorority sisters, I'm studying for a test or finishing a paper, or downtown for karaoke night at TOTS. There are so many wonderful traditions that it would be impossible to list them all. There are tons of opportunities to have fun on campus on a Saturday without drinking. The student center shows recent movies for $2 (a really good deal for us poor college kids!)
