What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
Dear Nicole,
No one will care about what you did in high school. Pulling all-nighters is not scary when done with friends. You will make friends. Learn to use a paper format other than MLA. Drink before the party. Once you figure out what you want to do, do not stop. Study abroad. Smile at strangers when you get here, and always hold the door. Do not cut in the lunch line. Attend hall meetings. Take advantage of alone time. The couches in the library are not comfortable. Make flashcards for finals. If the textbook has an online resource page for students, questions from it will be on the test. Attend class. Yes, every class. You will get in a fight with your roommate. You will both get over it. Sweatpants are ok. So are t-shirts. Cattiness is not ok. Neither is intolerance. Bring every costume you own. You will use these. Be completely honest with your academic advisor. It's ok to drop a class if you have to. It's not ok to ignore what you love. Your parents miss you already. Find every scholarship in existence. Most importantly, Nicole, bring rain boots. Carry on.

Describe the students at your school.
The classmates are usually very self expressive and non mainstream. They usually very open minded and friendly. Students are typically liberal minded, which might be a problem if the potential student is more traditional or conservative. Although an important aspect of social life and academics is the free exchange of ideas and very few students will put pressure on individuals to conform. Students are academically advanced and usually predisposed to discussion. An important and immediately obvious integral part of social life is the unique individual expression of students at Hendrix.

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.
Don't let others define your identity. Try new things, and discover who you are. It's better to find a few people with whom you can be best friends than to have a crowd of aquaintances. Have fun, but still try to be responsible with your school work. Really examine how you want to spend the rest of your life, and use what you find to help decide what to study.

What is your overall opinion of this school?
First of all, I have found Hendrix to be unlike any other place I have ever experienced. Students at Hendrix enjoy a welcoming atmosphere of friendliness and tolerance from the moment they arrive on campus. I have felt truly lucky to benefit from the genuine commitment to both personal and academic growth that exists here.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?
The people, the campus life, and the Ultimate frisbee team. I'm a member of the team, which also is the focus of a huge social network that is really an amazing part of hendrix; the social aspect is. It is a great community conducive to study, fun, friends, and being your own person.

What are the academics like at your school?
Hendrix academics, as I mentioned in the stereotypes section, have a reputation of being quite difficult. This is true in part. My experience has been that classes at Hendrix are designed to challenge you. Professors assign lots of work, but every assignment is designed to improve your grasp of the material being taught. Professors are completely available to students, a phenomena that I think stems from Hendrix being a small college. Professors frequently give students their cell phone numbers, and many encourage calls even in the absence of an emergency. Small class sizes allow professors to meet with students for coffee or hold review sessions at their homes. Professors go out of their way to prepare students for life after college, with support systems in place for grad school application, MCAT and LSAT prep, undergraduate research, job placement and much more.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?
Social life at Hendrix straddles between the desire to have a good time and the commitment to academics required to excel here. Most importantly, students tend to study, relax, and party together. There exists a vibrant array of student clubs and organizations that give students plenty to do. Hendrix clubs range from those based on sports, academics, politics, cultural diversity, charity, common interests, and many other subjects. There is something for everyone. If you don't find a club you are interested in, it is quite easy to acquire funding to start your own. These clubs sponsor performers, speakers, service events, programs, and parties. There is always something to do.
When you don't have downtime, and need to focus on academics, the library is a great place to go. Study groups are as common as individuals, and there are facilities for both. Support from fellow students make the rigorous academics at Hendrix much more pleasant. If you need to study, and you will from tme to time, you won't be distracted, and you'll have company if you want it. This being said, one can find a group of students partying nearly any night of the week. Hendrix's location in a dry county a half hour from the nearest metropolis (Little Rock) has made parties at Hendrix unique from those college bashes depicted in popular culture. This paired with the fact that there is no Greek system at Hendrix contribute to the distinctive qualities of Hendrix parties. Generally, parties are held within dorms, apartments or houses near campus. Parties tend to be very open and welcoming, allowing anyone to take part. Many parties tend to be small by college standards, but the atmosphere is every bit as festive as that in larger college parties elsewhere. Large campus wide parties are held several times a semester. Ghost Roast, Soco 54, Toga, and quite a few other large parties draw students from all over Arkansas to Hendrix. Martin Hall, one of the male dorms, tends to be the epicenter of parties on campus, although many great parties are held elsewhere.
The Hendrix administration has a reasonable policy on Alcohol, which maintains that students are allowed to carry opaque cups free from scrutiny, but not open containers. This being said, in the interest of safety and community, anyone who does something stupid or illegal in view of a college official, is likely to be reasonably punished.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.
Hendrix has a reputation for being a really tough school (at least in Arkansas), "hippie" students, an awesome Wellness and Athletic Center, and a lot of gays and lesbians. Most of fthose are true. Except there are all kinds of people here, not just hippies. And the only reason we have a higher number of gays and lesbians is because we're very open and accepting here. No lie, people really accept you for whoever you are here. It's currently Transgender Week here at Hendrix. : )

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
To the degree that activism and left leaning politics are prominent on college campuses nationwide, Hendrix students exhibit these qualities. Hendrix has a reputation within Arkansas as being an academically difficult school, and Hendrix students are thus assumed to be intelligent... I have found this to be true. As academically gifted and dedicated as Hendrix students are, we also know how to have a good time. Students from surrounding, often much larger state schools attend great parties hosted by Hendrix. This being said, parties here are not made great by alcohol, but rather by the fantastic atmosphere and energy fostered by the student body.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?
There is a lot of variety at Hendrix, but generally speaking students are seen as politically liberal, open-minded, smart, and quirky. That may be the case, but there are some vocal conservatives on campus, and beliefs fall everywhere on the spectrum. I would say the quality that could most easily be pinned to a majority of students is our acceptance of others' differences - regardless of sexuality, politics, religion, money, etc. you will be respected at Hendrix as long as you respect others.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
I wish I had known that the travel abroad opportunities that I had dreamed about were very pricey. I wish I had known that scholarship money was very hard to get. I wish I had realized that the rooms were really that small, and that I really do have lots of stuff. I wish I had known all of the friends I would make, I would not have been so worried. I wish I had known just how much I would love college life!

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
I would describe the majority of Hendrix students as the type of kids who were generally ostracized in some fashion in high school, mainly of the "liberal fish out of water in a conservative southern environment" variety. Or perhaps they weren't necessarily ostracized, but still, the majority of students fit the mold of "liberal who grew up in the conservative south." This isn't to say that there aren't conservatives or north easterners or west coasters on campus (there is quite a sizable population of jocks and their female counterparts in fact), but the "stereotypical" Hendrix student is a liberal hipster type from the southern US who's always striving to be as unique as possible (it's up to you to decide if that's good or bad).

What's the Greek scene like?
Hendrix doesn't have Greek life - in fact we have a "Faux Rush Week" full of events on campus that promote community in the residence halls and celebrates the fact that we don't have fraternities or sororities.

Tell us about the sports scene on campus.
We have varsity teams for basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, etc., but we don't have the same atmosphere surrounding athletics that you would expect at a large state university. I've gone to games, mostly to support friends of mine, but usually the whole campus doesn't turn out for an event. Starting in 2013 we will have a football team, which might make more people excited to have "team spirit" more than just supporting friends of theirs, but it's hard to say until that actually happens.
