Boston University was my dream school and for a reason. It is more than just a school, it becomes home. Thousands of young college students flock to Commonwealth Avenue during the beginning of September to start their first adventure away from home. BU gave me the comfort, confidence, and support I needed starting in a new place and environment for the first time. The school strives to put students first and they're serious about their commitment to students and their mission as an overall institution. If there is any question a student might have, there is an accessible department that can successfully provide an answer or solution. The student life is diverse and inclusive. The attitude at SPLASH events (semester held club fairs) is that if there isn't a club for you feel you fit in then create one with the university's support. The school holds professors, students, and all employees accountable to the importance of their roles, none being less important than the other. The location is perfect for accessibility right in the heart of the city of Boston with the most beautiful scenery, bordered by the Charles River and the train line. I would highly recommend this college to any student looking to prioritize their future career paths and find a welcoming first home away from home. BU will support those who want to discover their potential, passion, and purpose.

BU wasn't my first choice, but in a moment of desperation I applied early decision, and I am SO glad I did. Don't be worried if you're not into the city scene; I come from a small town in rural Texas, and I had no idea what to expect when moving up here, but the city is SO beautiful and incredibly safe as long as you don't purposefully put yourself in dangerous situations.
The school itself is wonderful; keep in mind that BU is still prestigious, so the course work is strenuous, and I say this as a STEM major. However you will still have time for extracurriculars and spending time with your friends. There is a place for EVERYONE here, and you may even find some interests you didn't realize you had before. For example, I had no idea I'd end up minoring in Deaf Studies when I applied, yet here I am!
Every school has its quirks, but what I love about this student body is that they won't hesitate to speak up if they feel they are being treated unfairly or there is something that BU could be doing better. I could not be more happy where I am and I have nothing but praise for BU.

Boston University (BU) is like that cool older sibling who’s always doing something impressive but still finds time to hang out with you. BU’s reputation for academic excellence is well-deserved, with top-notch programs across a wide range of fields. Whether you’re into the sciences, arts, or business, BU has something to offer, and it’s clear that the faculty are deeply invested in their students’ success.
But what really sets BU apart, in my opinion, is its vibrant campus life and its unbeatable location. Nestled in the heart of Boston, the campus offers the perfect mix of urban excitement and collegiate charm. You’re never far from a new experience, whether it’s exploring the city’s rich history, catching a Red Sox game, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk along the Charles River.
The student body is diverse and dynamic, reflecting the global nature of the university. This diversity isn’t just about different cultures and backgrounds—it’s about a community where everyone is encouraged to think critically, express themselves, and contribute to a lively academic and social environment.
BU also strikes a good balance between work and play. Sure, the coursework can be challenging, but the university provides plenty of opportunities to blow off steam, from student organizations to on-campus events.

I have had an excellent overall experience at Boston University and I would recommend it to any incoming students. As an institution, the depth and breadth of resources along with how engaged, diverse and caring the faculty and staff are is nearly unmatched. Overall, I would recommend Boston University solely for the wide range of career, extracurricular and internship opportunities, campus culture, and academics.
My opinion of the School of Music, from the lens of a composition student, is a little different. I have found that the faculty cares deeply about contemporary classical music, but the faculty is mostly old and mostly white and very detached from the actual climate of working in the music industry outside of academia. If you are not composing in the very specific field of academic contemporary classical composition, you will be hard pressed to find resources and networking opportunities from the Boston University faculty and will need to be a self-starter in order to build a career for yourself. With all of that said, Boston University does an excellent job imparting a very strong foundation in music theory, history, aural skills, and advanced techniques based on your field of study that you can carry with you into whatever your post-graduation musical goals are.
My overall review is: excellent school, good music program that gives students a strong foundation but doesn't necessarily prepare them for careers in music in the real world. The exception is, of course, music education, which has a 100% placement rate and is a highly regarded program nationwide.

Really depends on which classes and professors in terms of receiving the education you desire with many hit or misses. It is also an environment where you have to put in the extra effort to put yourself out there whether it may be making new friends or finding that internship or research opportunities because BU is such a large school. But on the other hand, the school really does provide you with so many resources and events that you must utilize to make worth every buck you spend for that hefty tuition.

As a college student interested in having multiple options to designing their future, I find Boston University to be a great fit. But as an African-American college student interested in exploring an enthralling Greek life, feeling seen and desired in the streets I walk upon, the dining halls and classrooms I sit in, I find Boston University to be a college I’d never choose willingly again in a million years.

I really like the environment in Boston University because it makes me feel like I'm at home and I have lived on their campus for two years during the summer program and it became a great experience for me. I also like their classes as well. It is decently big and the college professors are great as well. It is such a big campus and is worth living around in to create connections with staff and students.

Boston University is an urban campus surrounded by restaurants, stores and cafes, which makes it one of the most convenient locations to live in. There are T stops throughout the campus for students who take the train and a free BU bus to help you get to classes. I love that there isn't a huge emphasis on greek life or sports culture, and that there's tons of different organizations a student can get involved in.

I think Boston University has a great support system, but due to its large student body, it is difficult to get the personal attention from professors. For example, when asking for recommendations, it is difficult because professors do not get to know their students on a personal level where this is possible. Although that is the case, a lot of students are still able to find their place and succeed in the long run.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
Looking back on my senior year of high school, the most helpful piece of advice I could give myself would be to take a deep breath and relax. I was stressed out for the majority of the year, and it often tainted my enjoyment of senior activities. I worried that I chose the wrong school, or that I would have trouble fitting in, but that was far from the case. College, luckily, came naturally for me. Of course I struggled with the coursework, but I expected that. What I feared the most was having social difficulties, I was so scared to leave my friends and family. At school, however, it wasn't like I was leaving my family, but rather I was meeting another one. The people I met are some of the most genuine I have ever known, and they are the reason why my transition was nearly flawless. To the Paige of the past, hang in there because it only gets better.
The best this about the school is its cultural diversity and its location. It is a very comfortably sized city, surrounded by some of the best schools in the world. I have made some great connections for life in Boston.

Again, I would say location. Boston University is in the heart of the city, so there are a lot of activities and things to do. BU also has dozens of schools surrounding it which gives you a good chance to meet other students from different campuses and schools. No two schools in Boston look the same or are in any anyway alike. BU is the best one, obviously. :)
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
At BU you must be prepared to work VERY hard. Professors talk very quickly, and you need effective, yet EFFICENT notes. Majority of information you need to know will come from your lecture/reading notes. It is important to review these weekly to do well on your midterm exams. It takes 16 times for you to look at something and to fully understand it. Reviewing all material weekly will help you excel during your exams. Also, take advantage of writing centers and tutors, even if you think you dont need it - they improve your grades immensely!
Boston University is best known for its academics on an international level. Going abroad, people are impressed when you tell them that you study at Boston University. Locally, BU is known for its research and committment to bettering the local community. Many students do community service or tutor high school students on the side. BU is conveniently located in the heart of Boston, minutes away from Fenway Park and, and easily accessible by the T. Students not only have the university, but the whole city as a campus.
What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?
BU spends much of its time promoting itself for prospective students, but not necessarily as much pleasing the students currently there. Some of its administrative rules are pretty strict, but other than that, its a great school!
What kind of person should not attend this school?
If you are intimadated by a large urban school with little campus feel, this isnt the school for you. Also, depending on your major, ths school can be either very easy or extremely difficult. Lastly, anyone who cannot handle New England winters should not move to Boston.
What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
Not sure... maybe the fact that it IS big sometimes is frustrating in that errors can often be made in the records/accounts departments, but just a quick call usually clears things up easily. But it's not frustrating in a way that makes you feel like you're lost as a number in the crowd. Because you tend to see the same people all the time in class and in social groups, it doesn't actually feel big at all!
Professors in small classes know your name. Best and most unique class is ASL (offered at night). Mostly lecture style classes (plus labs for sciences). Very strong physcis and earth sciences department. No architecture. I came in as a freshman and fufilled all basic requirements through AP test credits. Not many students enthusiastic about learning.
I really like the urban feel of this school's location. Everything is at your convenience. There are late night school bus transportation and public transportation that runs through the city. I think the size of the school is just right, not too large or too small. Additionally, whenever I tell most people I attend this school; they are very proud and congratulate me.
However, I do not think this school is diverse enough. The administration's aim to diversify the school is by means of admitting international students from many Asian countries. However, domestic diversity is minute. Most students complain about the science departments, especially the Chemistry department at this school. In addition, some students are upset about grade deflations conducted by some professors.
What are the most popular student activities/groups?
Different fraternities and sororities are very popular on my campus. Additionally, many student love being involved in different community service groups. I a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), the Pre-Med Society, and my club Sister to Sister. BU is known as a "party" school. Students are usually at many fraternity parties during the weekend. Many students are usually dating and usually hook up at parties. I met my closest friends during my classes. I am not the typical college "party" student. You can definitely study on a Saturday night, which is what I am usually doing because of my hectic schedule or you can go to the movies or a nice restaurant. I visit some of my friends off campus and we usually go to the mall and go out to eat.
Boston University supports their sports teams. Hockey is the largest supported team at BU. Our main rival is BC and it is always fun to be at a BU vs BC any type of sport game because the tension is there and the hunger for winning against them is very apparent. Most of the time we win because we are better than BC and all the rest. :)
On campus has one of the best options ever. If you eat in the dining halls it is all you can eat. There are Special Chefs there all the time for Chinese New Years, Lobster Night, Mexican, Traditional Italian, etc. If you use dining points to eat on campus you can eat at several different restaurants offering pizza to mexican to chinese to salads, to bagel sandwiches etc. Off campus you have probably every nationality you can think of in a 10 min walking distance and truly every nationality within a short ride on the trolly system.
All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA.
Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
