College of Charleston Top Questions

Describe the students at College of Charleston.

Renee

There are more white people at the college, but it's not uncommon to see African Americans around campus. Race does sometimes seem to be an issue just because Charleston is in the South, but not often. There are a lot of homosexuals on campus. A lot of rich kids go to College of Charleston, and the rich kids all seem to be in a fraternity or sorority. A lot of them seem stuck up.

Devin

No one cares.

I wish it was a bit more diverse, and that there were more boys! People do not dress up for class at all- its always sweats, tshirts, and flip flops. There are a lot of students from the south, but then a lot from north east- Maryland, New Jersey, Boston... many of my friends are from Spartanberg

We have a large variety of clubs and organizations for people to get involved in- clubs that focus on religion, politics, sports, or majors. I think that there are definitely a variety of people represented at C of C, but the college could definitely use more racial diversity. While I do have friends of many different races I think that there is definitely a divide on campus and the college can improve in that area. The range of what students wear to class is crazy- I could go to class in a dress or in sweat pants and a t-shirt and not feel out of place either way. As far as politics on campus, we have groups for both liberals and conservatives but I do feel that our students lean more towards the liberal side.

I haven't really seen much of racial stereotyping but then again our school is close to 85{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} Caucasian. Some of the real redneck folk that are locals will throw a confederate flag on their pickup truck and talk about disliking jews and blacks but theres not a whole lot of that. You probably won't get the vibe from just walking around campus once or twice but there there are kind of a lot of hippies. I feel like there are a lot of rich kids at our school- walking to class you'll see girls in range rovers and guys in bmws. Surprisingly, I do see many students that are very politically active and aware. A bunch of people I know volunteer to help out local and national political campaigns.

Students that would most likely feel out of place would be very judgemental people or racist people. There is definately a mix. Most students wear jeans to class and a t-shirt. barely anyone wears PJs to class. I've found that there is a lot of people from different places. Most students are politically aware but I haven't had anyone be judgemental about anyone's political views.

The school is like 95{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} white, so there's not a lot of racial diversity. Almost everyone there is from out of state. Charleston is a big tourist city, so there's a lot of people that vacationed in Charleston then decided to go to school there.

Nick

The students here are a mix of everything. I have yet to see anyone pushing someone out because they are different. The college tries to allow you to express these differences and allows us to see them

The student body at C of C interacts with each other. It is the south, so there is some tension every now and then. But in reality, you find that no matter where you go. no matter your race, political views, sexual orientation... it doesn't matter because the campus is so diverse that you will find where you fit, the student body.

Elizabeth

CofC has a very diverse student body regarding ethnicities, financial backgrounds, nationalities and religious and political affiliations. While most of the students are from in state, there's enough out of state diversity to broaden mindsets about other nationalities. The average CofC student wants to be a success, but on his or her own terms. There is no operational definition of success. At the end of four years, everyone's concept of what he or she wants to do has morphed so greatly that it demonstrates how CofC molds its students to mature in mind and experience.
