George Washington University Top Questions

There are many different organizations on campus, and since we are in DC, some of the biggest groups seem to be political groups, like GW College Democrats. While this is a mostly liberal school, there is a substantial conservative group on campus aswell. I'm mainly involved in Greek life, which is not a huge part of the social scene at GW, which is actually nice. Because of this, many people involved in Greek life here do not necessarily fit the "sorority girl" or "frat boy" stereotype like you often see at Southern schools. For me, Greek life was a good way to meet new people and really establish a close group of friends, which can be difficult to do at a school like GW. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays seem to be the biggest days for GW students to go out, while Fridays are often quieter. There are many people at GW who go to clubs, but there are also people who prefer bars. Either way, there seems to be a "Scene" for both preferences.

Greek Life is very popular at GW. As a member, I am often involved in all Greek life activities, like mixers and parties and philanthropy events. The amazing thing about GW is that you have endless possibilities when it comes to going out. You can go to numerous clubs, bars at Adam's Morgan, jazz clubs on Capitol Hill, amazing restaurants at Georgetown, Fraternity parties on campus or you could even find a party in a dorm- especially Thurston.

College Democrats and College Republicans are pretty much the biggest on campus. As well the Colonial Army (our basketball team's fan club) are awesome. If it's basketball, it's popular on campus. Guest speakers can bring a huge audience, like Colbert, and Ann Coulter. We have a bunch of theater groups, and they're all well atteneded and pretty good. The Dating scene SUCKS. There's a slight imblance of girls to guys (more girls) and then a lot of the guys are gay. Add in the fact that a lot of Jewish boys will only date other jews, then if you're a not-jewish girl, you're shit out of luck. But there's a lot of other schools in the area, so it's okay.

I am involved in greek life and I absolutely love it at GW because it is not overpowering and can be as big a part of your life as you want it to be. there are tons of student orgs to get involved in, they have everything.

GW democrats and republicans are very popular. Guest speakers are very popular, especially when related to politics. Basketball games are relatively popular, but sports are not a very big deal. Most students have a great social life and find a balance. Thursdays and Saturdays are big nights out, but there are some students who go out 6 nights a week and some who never leave the dorm. If I am up very late during the week I am usually working. Greek life is not a huge part of GW from the outside, but once you are involved it is huge.

I think greek life is important. You don't have to be in greek life but if you are, it'll define who you are. Most people know the frats and sororities. I'm involved in my sorority and i love being involved. it gives me something to do. Thurston was the big freshman dorm when i was a freshman. Everyone was all over the place. Athletics are not popular at all- i don't think many poeple care about them unless the basketball team is doing well. No one dates at gw. You'll find a few people but i look at those couples and sometimes think they wouldn't be together if they went to some other school. I met my closest friends through other friends, through classes, through the gym. On tuesday if i'm awake at 2am, i could be doing a multitude of things like watching a movie, at a bar, doing homework. There is spring fling and fall fest. But i do events with my sorority all the time. i party all the time mostly on weekends. Thursday night is the big night to go out. The weekends consist of clubs, bar, dorm parties, house parties or frat parties. but if i don't go out i stay in and chill with my friends- always an option. Off campus is the best part. i live off campus and always go out off campus.

The political groups are definitely the most popular. I personally am very involved in Forbidden Planet Productions, one of the three student-run theater groups on campus. Freshmen leave their doors open, upperclassmen generally don't. Basketball games are very popular, as are some of the great guest speakers we've had, like Jimmy Carter. Theater has gotten a lot more popular in the past year. Suddenly every single one of our performances has been selling out, which is incredible. The dating scene at GW for straight girls is difficult. There are a lot of gay men here and not nearly as many gay women. And even if you do find a straight guy, it's hard to find one who's not a spoiled brat, who owns more pairs of expensive shoes than you do. I actually met my boyfriend through student theater, which surprised the hell out of me. The point is, look for them in strange places. I have two groups of friends. One group is my roommate and a bunch of kids who lived/hung out on my floor when I was a freshmen. The rest are my friends from theater. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I'm probably either running auditions for one of our shows, doing homework, or just gossipping with my roommate. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights are party nights at GW. But as you get older, people seem to add one or two more nights to that. Fraternities and sororities aren't that important here. The people who are in them are very big on them, but the people who aren't don't notice them much. This weekend, I studied a lot, because I have midterms next week. Friday night I went to Chinatown with a bunch of my theater friends and we went to a karaoke bar. There's plenty to do for non-drinkers on a Saturday night. There are three student theater groups, each of whom put on about 4 shows per semester, so chances are, you can go see a show. If they're not doing one, the Kennedy Center is walking distance. You can go to dance clubs and not drink, and there's live music clubs all over DC that are amazing if you're sober or drunk. People go off campus all the time! Shopping and dinner in Georgetown, karaoke and bars in Chinatown, clubs in Adams Morgan, concerts all over the place. There is an unlimited amount of stuff to do all over the city.

The most popular organization on campus is the College Democrats. I'm involed in that and my sorority. Students leave their doors open depending on what dorm they live in. If you live in Thurston your door will be open, but if you don't it probably wont be. I think that the men's basketball games are the most popular. Guest speakers draw huge crowds and a decent amount of people go to see shows. The dating scene doesn't happen for everyone in freshman year. People do hookup. If I am awake at 2am on Tuesday I'm either studying, writing a paper, watching a movie with my friends, walking to the Lincoln Memorial or on facebook. I met my closest friends through a pre-semester program and through mutual friends. There is always someone partying. But mostly Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. Sororities and Fraternities aren't that important, but everyone knows one person in Greek Life. It's bigger than you realize at first, but it doesn't matter. Last weekend I locked myself in Gelman (the library) because it was my week of midterms. On a Saturday night you can go to a movie, a play, go to a Nationals game there are lots of things to do. Off campus you can take adavantage of the free museums in DC like all the Smithsonians. You can go to the national mall and play frisbee or read and lay out. There is so much to do!

greek life is quite large and expanding, about 20 {4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students, with plenty of chapters to choose from. political/professional groups are also very popular. freshman dorms involve lots of open doors and lots of open sex. upper classmen dorms can be isolated; some people are known to never even see their neighbors. athletic events (basketball - there is no football team) are popular when the team is good. most friends are met freshman year, being awake late is either due to studying or going out (or staying in and playing drinking games to political events), including on weekdays. fall fest and spring fling are celebrations each year. partying takes place a lot, especially thursdays and saturdays. theaters are close by for those who choose not to drink, and plenty of bars and clubs are nearby, many metro-accessible or walkable.
