What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Catherine

I am in a sorority, Sigma Kappa. It has been one of the best experiences since I have been here. I have met some of my best friends on my hall in my dorm. We all leave our doors unlocked and people enter and go as they please.

Ariel

Greek life is getting bigger on campus. I am in Sigma Kappa and unlike other sororities, we don't really have a stereotype or mold that everyone fits.

greek life is almost all of my social life, some are regular drinker, some you don't have to be. once you turn 21 there's a big bar scene and its a good, fun, and safe atmosphere that takes you all over the city. within the greek townhouses everyone leaves their doors open and there's a real sense of family. the city is a huge part, the festivals, museums, events, speakers, everyone comes here. for a politics major it's perfect! my closest friends range from heavy party-ers to non-drinkers. cocaine use is prevailent. many kids have expendable incomes from mom and dad so that helps. people are competitive and smart- its the first time in my life i've been surrounded by motivated and intelligent people. good grades are important and cool. the dating scene is mostly random hook ups, few relationships.

i am a part of greek life and so the greek social scene is the first, and loudest, social scene in my life. i enjoy all the activities, not just the parties but the philanthropies and fundraisers as well. also, the many girls in my sorority participate in many different activities. just last week i attended one of my sister's play performances and it was amazing! although being greek is a large part of my life here at GW, it definitely is not something that is required of the students. unlike some schools, it is very easy to make friends and find things to do on weekends even if you are not a part of a sorority or a fraternity.

I'm involved in Greek Life and I really like it. It doesn't take over the school, you definitely have friends and activities outside of the sorority, but its still there if you want it. Greek Life here is growing every year, some see it as a good thing, some think our campus isn't big enough for such a large Greek population - its nearly at 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}.

Lauren

I am in a sorority, which has provided me with a fantastic social life. I feel as if my opportunities are truly endless - but that has little to do with GW and more to do with the fact that I am a social person living in a fabulous city.

Ashleigh

Greek life is the most popular group of organizations to join on campus. Students definitely leave their dorms open, especially in the freshman dorms. Speakers are popular because most of the students are very motivated. People party a lot because the school isn't strict at all. There are no RA's... just House proctors... so they can't even write you up. On a Saturday night, you don't have to drink. You are in a huge city and have endless other activities to participate in on or out of campus.

Lindsay

There is so much to do! Always speakers on campus and tons of activities and organizations to participate in.

harriet

There are tons and tons of guest speaker who are really famous that come to GW.

I would say there are four types of groups here: Greek life, athletes, non-Greeks, and foreigners. Of course some groups over lap, but that's how I would label everyone here. Being Greek, my social life revolves around my fraternity and brothers. I mostly only hang out with sorority girls because we do a lot with them. A lot of students leave their doors unlocked, but this can be a bad idea. Not because we're antisocial, but because of theft by living in the city. GW takes pride in hosting a lot of speakers, especially when it deals with current events, business professionals, and politics. We are very passionate about our Colonials, especially basketball (since we don't have football). My and my friends' philosophy is: work hard, play harder. We'll study as much as possible on a Tuesday or Thursday and then go out pretty hard. Being greek has a main affect on this because we're always together so we go to the same places mostly every week. I would say I and others go out about 3 times a week with different levels of how hard (Friday's are generally pretty slow). Being in the city gives us a lot of options of going out to bars and clubs, but also restaurants and places to hang out. For example, on nice days people like to walk around the Smithsonian and the National Mall, or play a sport on a local field.
