It’s amazing yet expensive. I’m an out state student and can’t bring most of my scholarship with me. I wish it was cheaper and easier to pay for but this is just the circumstance I was dealt with. Others might have similar or different opinions. Neither can I apply for the many instate scholarships.

Overall, Southern University is a great school with great programs, but I wish their communicating skills were stronger. Communication is very important and should be taken seriously so there isn't any room for confusion or misunderstanding, which Southern University lacks and affects their employees and students negatively.

I love my school but just like any school they have their pros and cons. Some pros would be the diversity and opportunists. While it is a HBCU you still meet people from all over the country. And there is always something to do on campus. ALWAYS. Some cons would be the financial aid office. It is sometimes difficult to get things done on time. Another con is their phone-answering. You'll be calling all day to reach on person. But they make up for that via their email system. They do respond in a decent manner when you email them.

I really love the campus it felt just like home. Students are involved and the teachers truly do care about your education. The campus isn't too big to walk to class and the student life is very active. When they have events, people come to BBQ, music playing, and everyone around is dancing. No school has a vibe like a HBCU. However, I do think they need a better admissions team and they should take the time to update their main website.

To SU or Alabama both has great bands and I would love to attend your colleges and both colleges have great academics, and more extra curricular activities that everyone can enjoy doing

Southern University and A & M College is a great school. It's your home away form home. You have a great environment to learn and have fun. But you have to make sure you take care of your business. Stay on top of the care givers in that department. As long as you do that, you have nothing to worry about.

Many may not agree opinion Southern University way of living, as well as lifestyle and culture. In my opinion its a great and save environment to broaden your horizon and get the education, as well as degree of your dreams. Many intellectual conversations take place inside the classroom, but on Southern campus they also take place outside the classroom doors. With the great hospitality, safety, and resources there’s no way to say no to Southern University.

Southern University and A & M College is the college that best suits me. Choosing to come here during my senior year of high school was no mistake. As all schools, Southern does have it flaws but overall I enjoy the experience. Here I am able to venture out and take advantage of all opportunities given to me, I meet new people from all around, and I am able to fully get the "college experience".

I feel like the faculty/staff could be better. Also, it could be better academically.

They say no bunking is allowed. But my roommate been having her friend living in our dorm room that is only suppose to be occupied by her and I. The room is very small as it is. We don't have room for a third body. I have reported it to the director of housing and the school chancellor and nothing have been done about it. The name of the dorm is Camille Shade hall. This dorm needs to be investigated immediately.

Southern University has to be one of the best decisions of my life. They not only get you ready academically but prepare you for your career after school. The professors and advisors are always accessible and try their best to get every student to graduate on time with a great grade point average.

Overall, Southern University is one of the most energetic HBCU’s I’ve explored. Everyone is very intelligent and helpful around the campus. Administrators are very welcoming and informal to incoming freshman and make sure that we’re ready for our first year. A lot of the students are very involved in sports, clubs, and many other campus activities to enjoy their college life. I’m very proud to finally be a Jag!
Kaitlin - 07/13/2019
Southern has its pros and cons like every other university. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved and plenty of events that happen on campus. The band is EVERYTHING. We also have a great gym with great equipment. The food can be inconsistent but its not completely terrible. Having a Burger King, Chick-fil-A, and our mini markets on campus helps a lot too. Administration can be a bit of a headache but as long as you have all of your ducks in a row way ahead of time you should be fine. Upper class-men are willing to help so don't be afraid to ask questions or seek a mentor. The culture and the people are what really makes Southern unique. Southern is a good school but its really what you make it.

Southern University and A&M college was by far one of my best choices for higher learning. Well rounded school and family based oriented. Everything I have learned at Southern has already begun to display in my work field. I also love how huge of an impact this university has on those who aren’t quite sure where they would like to attend.
Christian - 06/22/2019
Love Southern University, from the band to baseball season it’s a big time for me. By going to a school with good criminal justice program really make me feel more accomplished in life because I know I will do something in life. Never will switch up on my school.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
I encourage everyone to make a choice for themselves. A four-year institution, junior college, community college, or technical school is not for everyone. Some people succeed in all and others fall short. Choose a university for you not because, your friends are going there, or the school is not far from home. But, choose with your heart and your mind. Examine all your options and be willing to stick with it. College is the experience of a lifetime. Before college you're planning your life. During college you're living it. After college you're putting all your plans into motion. Choose a school where you can grow socially and academically. That's what life is truly about...progression.
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?
One of the major things I wish I knew before I came to this school would be the importance of having good grades to keep financial aid. My first year in college didn't go well due to adjusting to a new state and environment. Therefore, my grades suffered causing me to lose my financial aid, and I ended up having to do an appeal. Thankfully, I received my financial aid, and I never had a problem with maintaining my grades after that incident.
Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.
Southern University and A&M is a melting pot full of highly movtivated students and teachers, not only providing an education, but enhancing students social awareness on their journey to becoming fanatical human beings.
What's the most frustrating thing about your school?
The most frustrating thing about my school is the campus parking. Also, my fianancial situation is very limited, so it will be very difficult for me to pay for Nursing school next semester.
Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!
I was a student at another 4 year university before I started at Southern University. I can say that Southern has more of a "college feel". There isn't a dull moment on campus and there is always something to do. Unlike the college that I attended before, Southern University feels more like home. It's not often that you find a school that not only supplies you with the educational needs, but also it supplies you with love and support on and off campus.
What kind of person should not attend this school?
The kind of person I feel should not attend Southern University and A & M College is someone who is closed minded and not serious about their education.
The interacting between students and faculty, because it is important that we understand them; that way we can do well in school. Also attending the different sporting events because it brings everyone closer together and it gives the students something to do while classes are no longer in session.
My favorite classes are Chemistry classes. My least favorite classes are the Physics classes. Class participation is very common and the professors will make sure you understand by giving you time to think about the answers before giving them orally. The students are really competitive, but will look out for one another to make sure they all understand. They usually share the information they have already and whatever is not known, they try to explain it to the best of their knowledge.
All students must apply yearly for financial aid. This process starts with the FAFSA.
Though financial aid deadlines vary by school, it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible. For the upcoming school year, you can apply as early as October 1 for the FAFSA. Additional school aid will be dependent on the FAFSA results.
98% of students attending Southern University and A & M College receive some sort of financial aid.
79% were awarded federal grants.86%received federal loans. Many students do also need to apply for additional private student loans.
