The University of Texas at Arlington Top Questions

What should every freshman at The University of Texas at Arlington know before they start?

Kelsey

You're going to fail, but everything will not fall apart. That plan that you had in your head, the one where you went in guns blazing, isn't going to pan out like you expected, but it'll be alright. You'll feel like the only failure, but you're not. Plenty of your future friends will struggle fining a niche, and then you'll meet each other, forming a rag-tag group of misfits who wouldn't give each other up for everything. It all starts with steping out of your comfort zone, so make sure to make an effort each day to do that. Just once a day, step out of default mode, and you'll achieve great things. The only thing holding you back is yourself.

I would have to convince myself that I should take college level classes during the school year and to research school more before I send out my applications.

Corlisa

Dear Corlisa, i know you are about to make the biggest decision of your life regarding college and all. Make sure you prepare yourself spiritually, mentally/emotionally, physically, academically, and financially. Make sure you apply for as many scholarships as possible or get a job because it is hard out there. Make sure you find an organization to get into at least so that you will not be crammed in the room and dealing with depression. You need make sure you study and take advantage of whatever services that school might have that will ensure of your success. High school is a huge transition because of the workload, and the expectations seem to be less demanded from others but more harder when you allow yourself to accept the pressure. Relax, take a deep breath and you will make it through. The only thing you have to do is take it a day at a time.

Courtney

The advice I would give to the high school me is that you can't take on the whole world and make it out okay. Calm down and don't grow up too fast. Enjoy these years without much responsibility because college is going to make you feel old. Give mom a lot of kisses and hugs because once you move into the dorm you'll regret not doing it more often while you were home. College is nothing like the movies so don't worry much about being slightly unsocial. You'll make new friends and lose old ones. That's just a part of growing up. You will realize who is really there for you when you lose your keys or run low on ramen noodles. Just remember you can only take on so much. Breathe. This is a lot to take in, but knowing you, you'll do fine.

Learn how to study in high school. The teachers will not follow you around in University asking for assignments and homework. It's all on you. Get into the habit of walking into every class with the thought "I'm going to get an A in this class", then live like it. Last minute studying does not work and you will need to time manage really well in order to do extra curriculars. College is a great time. You grow as a person as well as academically so enjoy it. Just be responsible and know that you will find a wider range of people there. You will make some great friends.

Matthew

Take action, don't wait for someone to give you the answer.

Desmond

Hi, yes i am you from the future ok listen up, please pay attention and do your work becuase it is a lot harder now then it will be in college while it is time consuming but scholarships really come in handy and your gpa is rather important when being considered for most scholarsips. Also save up your money because a car is very important to have to get around and visit the schools you would like to possibly attend. Dont be afraid it really isn't that hard to get in if you are commited to school now there is always time for friends and parties later in the year. Start early to make sure that you get everything turned in on time and dont be scared to ask your friends and family members for hel[p on things you dont understand or know how to do. The application process does cost money so again i can not say it enough that you need to save up.

Daniela

Apply to many scholarships! I would have told myself to take college classes during the summer to get basic classes over with.

david

Just relax and go with the flow, do what the teacher says and never give up and you CAN do it! Also be more open to every student/ classmates and really try to get your feet wet with the material. College isnt as hard as it seems and how people describe. All it takes is a little effort and anyone can honestly do it, yes that includes myself! Even though you dont know what you want to do, it is ok it will soon be clear and just take it slow mainly. Also know that there are endless possiblities with higher education, also know that no one will tell you where you will go and you have to make your own path and figure it along the way with great people beside you. Always ask questions, dont be afraid of the answer. Last but not least the most important thing is to face your destiny without fear but with courage and heart and then you will have nothing to fear, take the risks and leave everyone speechless at what you can accomplish because you can do it.

Christine

I would have told myself to apply for more scholarships as a senior. I didn't realize how many scholarship opportunities I missed till it was too late. I also would have advised myself to join more clubs and sports activities in high school. I would have taken more A.P. classes and got some of the college courses I needed out of the way in high school free. I would tell my younger self to apply for college during my final months in high school to start a semester earlier than I did. I would also tell myself how proud I am of me. I understood that it was important to be involved in extracurricular activities and clubs and how important good grades are. I would give myself a pat on the back for trying my best and making my parents proud.
