Colorado's 109 Colleges and Universities

Most of the colleges in Colorado are in Denver and Colorado Springs areas. Like most other states, schools range from four year colleges to vocational schools. Let’s look at some NCES stats about the Centennial State:

• Colorado is home to 50 four year colleges. 11 offer masters or doctorate programs in addition to undergraduate degrees.
• There are 59 two year or less colleges. About 25% are public community colleges. This means, unlike other states, the majority are actually career oriented for profit schools.
• Over the past 5 years Colorado colleges have seen a small .8% drop in students. In 2017, 360,236 students were enrolled in college.
• In total, there were 65,824 degrees awarded for the 2016 school year. 53% of those awards were bachelor degrees.

Colorado's Tuition Programs

Colorado offers a state wide transfer agreement between it's two year public community colleges and four year public colleges. This means you could transfer all 60 credits earned in community college. There is also a stipend fund for in state students going to school in Colorado. This fund reduces the per credit dollar amount students pay. For the 2017 school year, the per credit stipend was $77. Students going to a private college are only eligible for 50% of the stipend.

Colorado is also a member of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). This program enables students to pursue degrees in one of 15 Western states at an in state tuition rate. According to WICHE, Colorado students have saved over $300 million out of state tuition since 1988. In 2018 that number was $28.8 million! Participating states include New Mexico and Utah.
